Moving and Delicious 5 out of 5 stars.

A lovely book, reminding me somewhat of my own childhood and my over-the-top overprotective father. The descriptions of her family's meals are incredible. I found myself rushing to make the recipes, looking forward to enjoying devouring them as I read, like I was sitting at the table with the author.

One of those books that you think, "Ok, it's late... I'll just read until the end of this chapter," then you don't put it down.

Well, if you're a foodie daughter of an immigrant like me, anyway.

Editorial Review:

Diana Abu-Jaber’s vibrant, humorous memoir weaves together stories of being raised by a food-obsessed Jordanian father with tales of Lake Ontario shish kabob cookouts and goat stew feasts under Bedouin tents in the desert. These sensuously evoked repasts, complete with recipes, in turn illuminate the two cultures of Diana's childhood–American and Jordanian–while helping to paint a loving and complex portrait of her impractical, displaced immigrant father who, like many an immigrant before him, cooked to remember the place he came from and to pass that connection on to his children. The Language of Baklava irresistably invites us to sit down at the table with Diana’s family, sharing unforgettable meals that turn out to be as much about “grace, difference, faith, love” as they are about food.

Editorial Review:

Already hailed as "brave, emotional, and gorgeously written" by Frances Mayes and "like a piece of dark chocolate--bittersweet, satisfying, and finished all too soon" by Laura Fraser, author of An Italian Affair, this is a unique memoir about the search for identity through love, hunger, and food.

Jim Harrison says, "TRAIL OF CRUMBS reminds me of what heavily costumed and concealed waifs we all are. Kim Sunée tells us so much about the French that I never learned in 25 trips to Paris, but mostly about the terrors and pleasure of that infinite octopus, love. A fine book."

When Kim Sunée was three years old, her mother took her to a marketplace, deposited her on a bench with a fistful of food, and promised she'd be right back. Three days later a policeman took the little girl, clutching what was now only a fistful of crumbs, to a police station and told her that she'd been abandoned by her mother.

Fast-forward almost 20 years and Kim's life is unrecognizable. Adopted by a young New Orleans couple, she spends her youth as one of only two Asian children in her entire community. At the age of 21, she becomes involved with a famous French businessman and suddenly finds herself living in France, mistress over his houses in Provence and Paris, and stepmother to his eight year-old daughter.

Kim takes readers on a lyrical journey from Korea to New Orleans to Paris and Provence, along the way serving forth her favorite recipes. A love story at heart, this memoir is about the search for identity and a book that will appeal to anyone who is passionate about love, food, travel, and the ultimate search for self. (2008)

Another Best of the Best 5 out of 5 stars.

Volume 10 is as good as its predecessors, if not better. As with the other volumes, this one covers the best 25 cookbooks of the year. They selected a rather nice mix of cookbooks from desserts to ethnic dishes, beginner to slightly advanced, and tv chefs to unknown authors.

Highlighted cookbooks include the Cake Book, Heirloom Baking with the Brass Sisters, the Essence of Chocolate, the Lee Bros. Southern Kitchen, Biba's Italy, Jamie's Italy, Giada's Family Dinners, the Food of France, New Greek Cuisine, the Food of Northern Spain, Lobel's Meat and Wine, the Good Home Cookbook, Barefoot Contessa at Home, How to Boil Water, Braise, the Red Cat Cookbook, A Ligurian Kitchen, On Top of Spaghetti, Stonewall Kitchen Favorites, Big Small Plates, Baja! Cooking on the Edge, the Kitchen Diaries, Spice, Sparks in the Kitchen, and Cucina of Le Marche.

Each selection includes a brief introduction; several recipes, with notes on how to find or prepare ingredients and other tips; an exclusive recipe from the author; and beautiful full-page color photos of the finished dish. Not all recipes include pictures, however.

This is a must-read for anyone who loves cookbooks. Once again, I will seek out a handful of the chosen cookbooks to add to my collection. My only complaint that there seemed to be too much ethnic food (featuring somewhat exotic ingredients that may be hard to track down). I would have liked to have seen a few more books on more mainstream "American" dishes (with less exotic ethnic ingredients) and perhaps another book on desserts.

I've alerted Amazon twice to the fact that the photo they posted of the cover is from Volume 9 but they still haven't fixed it. You can see the correct cover photo at the Food & Wine magazine website (http://www.foodandwine.com/books) but their price is significantly higher so come back to Amazon to order it.

Editorial Review:

Almost one million subscribers heartily agree: Food & Wine is the unrivaled leader in the field, and every year their editors search tirelessly for the most delectable dishes from the crème de la crème of cookbooks. Here are their selections, along with an extra treat: some special and previously unpublished recipes. It comes to more than 100 fully kitchen-tested, temptingly photographed dishes in all. And the food doesn’t come better than this. There are recipes from Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Italy, Daniel Boulud’s Braise, Giada DeLaurentiis’s Giada’s Family Dinners, and Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa at Home, and many more. Along with the fantastic dishes, there are more than 20 bonus, never-before-published recipes from almost every author, plus great tips from the Food & Wine test kitchen.

Editorial Review:

On a trip to Turkey as a young woman, chef Ana Sortun fell in love with the food and learned the traditions of Turkish cooking from local women. Inspired beyond measure, Sortun opened her own restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the award-winning Oleana, where she creates her own interpretations of dishes incorporating the incredible array of delicious spices and herbs used in eastern regions of the Mediterranean.

In this gorgeously photographed book, Sortun shows readers how to use this philosophy of spice to create wonderful dishes in their own homes. She reveals how the artful use of spices and herbs rather than fat and cream is key to the full, rich flavors of Mediterranean cuisine -- and the way it leaves you feeling satisfied afterward. The book is organized by spice, detailing the ways certain spices complement one another and how they flavor other foods and creating in home cooks a kind of sense-memory that allows for a more intuitive use of spice in their own dishes. The more than one hundred tantalizing spice categories and recipes include:

  • Beef Shish Kabobs with Sumac Onions and Parsley Butter
  • Chickpea and Potato Terrine Stuffed with Pine Nuts, Spinach, Onion, and Tahini
  • Crispy Lemon Chicken with Za’atar
  • Golden Gazpacho with Condiments
  • Fried Haloumi Cheese with Pear and Spiced Dates

Absolutely alive with spices and herbs, Ana Sortun’s recipes will intrigue and inspire readers everywhere.

Editorial Review:

It is one of the world's oldest and most intriguing cuisines, yet few have explored the diverse dishes and enchanting flavors of Arab cookery beyond hummus and tabouleh. In 188 recipes, The Arab Table introduces home cooks to the fresh foods, exquisite tastes, and generous spirit of the Arab table.

May S. Bsisu, who has lived and cooked in Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, England, and now the United States, takes you along a reassuringly down-to-earth and warmly personal path through exciting culinary territory. The Arab Table focuses intimately on the foods of Arab countries such as Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Syria.

The book offers a bountiful range of appealing dishes: cold and hot mezza, or little dishes; vibrant salads and fresh vegetable preparations; savory soups, stews, and hearty casseroles; baked and grilled meats, poultry, and fish; cooling drinks; and ambrosial desserts. There are recipes for familiar dishes including Falafel, Chicken and Lamb Kebabs, and Baklava, as well as a diverse selection of lesser known delights greatly enjoyed around the world, such as Eggplant Pomegranate Salad, Zucchini with Bread and Mint, Grilled Halloumi Cheese Triangles, and Arab Flatbread. Celebration dishes, the cornerstone of Arab cuisine, include Moroccan and Lebanese Couscous, Baked Lamb with Rice and Chickpeas, and Baked Sea Bass with Rice and Caramelized Onions. No Arab cookbook would be complete without an ample selection of soups and stews, the customary way to break the fast at the end of each day during Ramadan. The Arab table is also well known for its sweets: Semolina Pistachio Layer Cake, Milk Pudding, and, of course, date-, nut-, and cream-filled pastries perfumed with rose and orange-blossom water are just a sampling of the desserts included here.

Along with these treasured recipes collected from May's extended family, friends, neighbors, and her own discoveries, The Arab Table is also a resource for learning about the traditions and customs associated with this time-honored cuisine. Throughout, essays on Arab holidays, from Eid Al Adha, the feast celebrating the end of the pilgrimage to Mecca, to Ramadan and Mubarakeh, the celebration for the birth of a baby, are explained and menus are provided for each. May enlightens readers as to customary greetings (How do you say Happy Ramadan?), gifts (What do you bring to an Arab home during Ramadan?), and wishes (How do you acknowledge the birth of a baby?) that are traditionally extended during these special occasions.

Now you can bring the abundance and flavors of The Arab Table to your table.

Top entertainment, ok book 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Iron Chef is the most ingenious TV show ever created, well, the REAL original IC show, at any rate.

The over-the top cheesy quality, the bad-English dubbing, the dumb air-head actresses(who sometimes come up with surprising smart comments); the exotic ingredients, and of course--the challenges. The stuff that no normal person would ever cook, or dream of touching on his dinner plate.
The combination of sports arena quality and the sideshow of Prices Right, equals=valuable hours of your life spent on watching TV!

the book is very in depth, though not quite a "cook" book, the only true thing it lacks it the statistical point. Who won the battles, etc.

I am very disappointed in Food Network for not continuing to buy more Iron Chef shows and or continuing to show the reruns; and not to make them into DVDs....instead they're being despots and forcing us to watch that horrible horrible horrible mutant child that came out of that so called "chef".
Yet again, an original anime/comedy/whatever show is ruined...just like how they mangled Godzilla. the "Other Thing" show lacks the corny flavor, the second commentator (Fuki-San was awesome), the REAL chairman, a REAL Chef, REAL ingredients; Fun challengers, (ok, Ming Tsai was funny, but that's it);my respect for Ming grew after watching that only good episode...he was funny, relaxed, self-assured and he kicked Flay's butt!!
awful musical score (sure the soundtrack of the ONLY incarnation of IC was from.....movie, Backdraft), pathetic judges (they ALL annoy me, for some reason).

watching the "OTher Thing" gives me a stomach ache, a headache....and I keep rambling.

SCOUR THE EARTH for lost videos/tapes/bootlegs of the ONLY IRON CHEF. If you're a true fan, don't even bother watching "Other Thing".

"If my memory serves me correctly....this book will give me recollections of funny and good times."

+150 on the Wow meter for the show, 6+ for the book;
-100 on the Puke-O-Meter for "the Other Thing"

Editorial Review:

Go behind the scenes in Kitchen Stadium. Meet Morimoto, Chen Kenichi, and all the IRON CHEFs. Learn the exclusive secrets to their signature creations. Sit down with Kaga and sample his ten favorite dishes of all time-with never-before-published recipes. And it doesn't stop there. Inside you'll find interviews with the tasters; insight from the show's creators and producers; loads of photos; plate-by-plate commentary on every IRON CHEF battle...and much more!

Editorial Review:

The only cookbook that wants to get you out of the kitchen!

This is the hilarious story of Jamie Geller, a spunky young TV exec who came into marriage and kosher cooking without knowing a spatula from a saucepan. Determined to master cooking, yet pressed for time, she was dismayed to find that most cookbooks consider an hour of preparation time quick, and presumed more culinary skill than many of us have. So Jamie set out to compile her own special collection of quick and easy recipes and Quick & Kosher is the result of her quest.

This one-of-a-kind cookbook contains more than 160 recipes requiring no more than 15 minutes to prepare, 120 full-color photos, clear step-by-step instructions, reliable prep and cooking times, tips and techniques, and advice on pairing wines with various dishes. Recipes range from traditional to exotic, and are well indexed and cross-referenced.

Several special sections such as Setting up Your Kitchen, Secrets of the 15-Minute Chef and Shopping Like an Expert are the result of extensive insider interviews with food professionals who helped facilitate Jamie's path to culinary mastery. These sections offer practical answers to the questions you've always wanted to ask: how do I buy meat, fish, produce, groceries, and wine?

Is this a cookbook? An autobiography? A kitchen handbook for brides? It is all of these and more, for Quick & Kosher will amuse, inspire and teach even skilled cooks a thing or two. I wrote Quick & Kosher says Jamie Geller, because you and I are in the same boat. We want to serve up something tantalizing for dinner, but between kids, careers, and carpools, we have no time to patchka!

Editorial Review:

At Michy's, acclaimed as Miami's best restaurant, Michelle Bernstein is building a national following for her fresh new take on Latin cuisine. Born and raised by a food-loving Argentinean mother in Miami, Michelle grew up fluent in Spanish and steeped in the city's cosmopolitan, Latin-influenced culture. She explored South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Using the freshest ingredients and the French training she went on to acquire, she has blended all these traditions into a cuisine that is uniquely hers.

Cuisine à Latina introduces us to Michelle's world. Her Latin food is unlike any that you've probably tasted. Full of flavor, it is familiar but exciting — vividly seasoned but not fiery hot, with touches that reflect the casual vivacity of Miami. You'll find many appetizers to light up a gathering: Fried Calamari with Chile-Coconut Sauce, irresistibly flaky Ground Beef and Tomato Empanadas, and bright Peruvian Mixed Seafood Ceviche. Or start off with Michelle's cool riff on a Spanish classic, White Gazpacho with Almonds, Grapes, and Cucumber.

Michelle gives you plenty of great party dishes with Latin flair, like Beef Tenderloin with Creamy Horseradish, or the colorful Fideua, bursting with seafood and herbs, which is similar to paella but much easier, and made with spaghetti instead of rice. You'll also want to try her sensationally simple grilled steak with chimichurri sauce, the Argentinean version of salsa. Her Cornish game hens, marinated in garlic-lime mojo, with chorizo sausage-bread stuffing, are perfect for Thanksgiving — or a summer evening — and she shows you how to make the same recipe with turkey.

Michelle's uncomplicated "Mama cooking" will spice up your everyday repertoire: Mom's Arroz con Pollo (chicken with yellow rice), Tuna Schnitzel with Cucumber Slaw, Pork with Prunes and Apricots. Her side dishes and salads beg to be at the center of the plate: Chili-Fried Onion Rings, Mexican-Style Corn on the Cob, and Bibb Lettuce with Avocado, Shredded Jack Cheese, and Buttermilk–Charred Jalapeño Dressing. Cuisine à Latina may change your view of Latin food — and it will revitalize your cooking.

A three-time James Beard Award nominee, Michelle Bernstein is chef-owner of the Michy's in Miami, Michelle's at Carysfort in Key Largo, Florida, and MB in Cancun. A former professional ballerina, she trained at Johnson & Wales and under the renowned chef Jean-Louis Palladin.

Andrew Friedman has coauthored cookbooks with Alfred Portale, Tom Valenti, the former White House chef Walter Scheib, and many others. He also coedited the popular anthology Don't Try This at Home and collaborated on the New York Times best-selling memoir Breaking Back.

Editorial Review:

Daniel Boulud's BRAISE is the superstar chef's guide to braising. Featuring braising recipes from around the world, this book will become an instant classic and the definitive cookbook on the technique, bringing one pot meals to a whole new level.

BRAISE is Daniel Boulud's definitive cookbook on the time–honored cooking technique of braising. Braising is "moist heat" cooking, where a small amount of liquid is cooked along with the food in a closed container over long periods of time. A successful braise mingles the flavors of the food being cooked with the liquid it is cooked in, and, because the cooking takes place slowly without burning the food, the technique results in rich, aromatic flavors.

Daniel Boulud has collected the world's best recipes for BRAISE. Featuring dishes from Thailand, Italy, Mexico, Turkey, Lebanon, France, Russia, China and many other places, BRAISE is a comprehensive guide to braising. With simple recipes for all kinds of braises –– from meat to fish to vegetables –– the book is sure to please cooks of every skill level. Whether you're interested in the ordinary (Pot Roast) or the exotic (Quiabebe from Brazil), Boulud's expert guidance and easy to follow recipes bring the world of braise to your fingertips with welcome simplicity and intense flavour.
