Editorial Review:

By the time she was a teenager, Sara Jenkins had lived all over the Mediterranean, from Italy and France to Spain, Lebanon, and Cyprus, in cosmopolitan cities and in rural hamlets. The family eventually put down roots in a ramshackle farmhouse in a small Tuscan village, where she learned how to make ragù and handmade pasta at the elbow of her Italian "grandmother" on the nearby farm. Meals came from the garden and the surrounding pastures, not the supermarket, and Jenkins grew up schooled in the tradition of cooking from what was on hand.

In Olives & Oranges, Jenkins shares the simple, striking dishes she learned at the source. Many, like Peppery Braised Short Ribs and Classic Tuscan Eggplant Parmesan, are favorites from childhood. Others, like Short Pasta with Mushrooms and Mint and Spicy Lemon–Chocolate Ganache Tart, have a contemporary sensibility. Jenkins shows how understanding the Mediterranean "language of flavor" can help you follow your instincts and make your own great meals based on what you have, too. You'll see how salt and lemon juice bring out the natural sugar in Carrot Salad with Lemon, Sea Salt, Parsley, and Olive Oil, and how to use the same technique with lime, salt, and a Moroccan condiment called harissa for a completely different effect in Tunisian Raw Turnip Salad.

The opening chapter introduces "small plates"— easy, versatile dishes that can preface a dinner or be grouped together for a small feast, from Roasted Red Peppers with Garlic and Celery Leaves to Chicken Liver Crostini. Soups are spontaneous and flexible, whether they are cooling purées like White Almond Gazpacho or sturdy full bowls like Rich Chicken Soup with Greens. The incomparable pastas encompass fast every-night selections (Spaghettini with Burst Cherry Tomatoes) to complex celebration affairs like Braised Rabbit Ragù and Homemade Lasagna.

Fish, poultry, and meat chapters feature rustic preparations: roasted scallops capped with a pale green butter seasoned with parsley and garlic; an impressively big-flavored chicken smeared with a mixture of bacon and herbs and baked in a salt crust; and a spectacular staple of Roman trattorias, veal cutlets wrapped in prosciutto and sage and crisp-fried. Desserts range from fresh Strawberries with Prosecco to a sumptuous Coffee Cardamom Crème Caramel to the rich but light Lemon Olive Oil Cake.

Each of the recipes in the book is identified as "Quick-Cook" or "Slow-Cook" so you can choose which fit best into your schedule. "Flavor Tips" throughout the book suggest ways to modify the dishes so you can use what's freshest and most available.

The daughter of the noted food authority Nancy Harmon Jenkins, SARA JENKINS has earned raves at all the New York restaurants where she has been the chef, including 50 Carmine, Il Buco, I Coppi, and Patio. Her newest venture, Porchetta, is located in New York City's East Village. This is her first book.

Greatest CUBAN HOME COOKING book ever! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

After sitting in the bookstore, going over about 10-20 so called Cuban recipe cookbooks, this is the ONE in my kitchen. Both my parents are from Cuba, I was born there as well, so naturally my siblings and I grew up on traditional Cuban recipes. This book is the closest to Mom's cooking I have ever found, and with some help from Mom, these recipes are just like being home. Easy to follow, simple, traditional recipes. Once you get the hang of "sofrito", which is base for most of our dishes, you won't be disappointed. LOVE this cookbook, and its wonderful, savory Cuban dishes!

Loved It!!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

My husband is from Miami and when i was pregnant he took me to Miami and got me addicted to cuban food. We both really missed the food and this book brings back so many good memories. It really satisfies your taste buds.

Editorial Review:

Authentic Cuban recipes offer a mixture of Spanish, Indian, African, Chinese, and Portuguese cuisine, from appetizers like Green Plantain Chips, to such entrees as Roast Pork Creole, to tropical rum-based drinks and desserts.

The recipes are well presented and the pictures are very pretty!
She made adaptations to "tradicional" latin recipes to be prepared by Americans or latins in USA.
Well done!

Following the Latin American Trend 5 out of 5 stars.

Ingrid Hoffmann is right on trend with one of the hottest eating trends in American - delicious foods with a Latin American twist. Her dialogue throughout the book is bubbly, fresh and conversational. Her detailed explanation of the various foods in her pantry will be very helpful for people who are not as familiar with Latin American ingredients. If you are looking for a true authentic Latin American cuisine then you may want to choose a different cookbook, but if you are looking for a fun Latin American fusion cookbook, Simply Delicioso is a excellent choice.

Awesome Cook Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My husband is from Peru and I've had a hard time finding a good cook book. This has great traditional recipes with awesome photos. They give you a little history about the food and it has a bookmark with the names and photos of the most popular ingredients. This will help me the next time I'm at the grocery store. It deserves 5 stars.

Great book!! 5 out of 5 stars.

OUTSTANDING!!

Put a coffee table in your kitchen 5 out of 5 stars.

I saw this book during a recent visit to Peru, on our last day there. Throughout our trip we had been repeatedly astounded by the quality of the food we were served and by the almost asian presentation of the servings. My husband and our good friend, both the primary chefs for their families, practically drooled on the book, which contains recipes for a number of the dishes we had enjoyed eating. We opted not to buy it at that time because of the weight and the lack of space in our luggage, but when I saw it on Amazon and read the reviews, many from peruanos or people married to peruanos, I was prompted to order it.

And as a bonus, in addition to containing many wonderful recipes this book is beautiful--a veritable coffee table book. So perhaps we should install one in our kitchen.

Autentico y sabroso 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

We decided we needed some Puerto Rican cookbooks in the house, and Puerto Rican Cuisine is one of them. It really looks like all our abuelitas worked on this great cookbook with Rivera. Quite a few recipes brought tears to my eyes since I haven't eaten them in over six years since my great-grandmother died. We look forward to recreating many of her dishes with the assistance of this book. If you want a simple, authentic Puerto Rican cookbook, this is for your culinary library.

Basic recipes! 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was expecting to find more recipes of Puerto rican dishes. However, it does the job in providing you with basic recipes that you can do on a daily basis. I was expecting one for some fancy dish.

Editorial Review:

Puerto Rican cuisine, with its strong Spanish and African influences, holds a unique position in the world of Caribbean cooking. The food is spicy, hearty, healthy, sensuous, and adventurous. The 240-plus recipes included here range from traditional island dishes and drinks to the latest Nuyorican creations. Fully illustrated, this edition features a new preface by the author.

Secrets of Colombian Cooking provides a window into the diverse cuisine of this little-known South American nation. Author Patricia McCausland-Gallo, a native Colombian, traveled throughout the many regions of Colombia to gather the most authentic dishes. With a wide range of recipes and a glossary of typical ingredients, this book acquaints cooks with the array of foods that make up Colombian cuisine, including sweet and hot peppers, plantains, tamarind, gooseberries, papayas, guavas, and tree tomatoes.

From the coffee and cacao grown high in the Andes Mountains to the many tropical fruits of the Caribbean and Amazonian regions, the great cattle farms on the plains, and bountiful seafood from the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Colombia is a country of vast and exotic culinary creations. Secrets of Colombian Cooking presents the wide spectrum of Colombian cuisine to home cooks in more than 175 inviting recipes from simple, hearty sancochos (soups and stews prepared differently in every region) to more exotic fare such as Langosta al Coco (Lobster in Coconut Sauce) and Ají de Uchuvas (Yellow Gooseberry Sauce). Best Peruvian Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

My wife is from northern Peru, and she introduced me to Peruvian cuisine. Everyone I know who has been to Peru says it has the world's greatest food, and I agree. I've asked cooks in Peru to teach me the recipes: they don't use cookbooks and they don't measure anything: it is all by sight. If you can go to Peru and learn first hand, do that. If you can't, then get this book. The recipes here are much much better than other South American cookbooks I've tried. I don't know that you'll ever be able to match some Peruvian meals without building your own boat and net, surfing the waves, catching the fish, selecting limes by hand in the market, raising the duck in the backyard, digging potatoes from the Peruvian desert, etc. This is still a great book, and I've even given it as a gift to Peruvian friends.

Editorial Review:

The first cookbook to assess Peruvian cooking, The Exotic Kitchens of Peru provides readers with not only sumptuous and unique recipes, but also a wonderfully detailed history of Peru. Whatever your tastes are, you are sure to discover many new favorite dishes in The Exotic Kitchens of Peru. Illustrated throughout with line drawings, and with a complete glossary of Peruvian culinary terms, this unique cookbook is a must-have for everyone from cookbook collectors to those seeking to learn more about the exotic Peruvian culture.

You've seen him on The Food Network, grillin' and chillin'. And on Lifetime's The Main Ingredient, demystifying cooking. And if you're lucky, you've eaten in one of Bobby Flay's three New York city restaurants. Now Bobby's using his formidable culinary talents to turn entertaining on its ear, sharing the secrets of his kitchen and making them accessible to you.

"Why make a meal that you can't enjoy with everyone else?" asks Bobby. "Let me introduce you to food that is fun!" And fun it is. Bobby's party dishes are a bold and fragrant mix. Nothing is designed specifically to be an appetizer or a main course--instead, everything is heaped in large bowls or arranged on oversized platters and set out on the table at the same time. To help you in the kitchen, recipes are organized according to where the dish is prepared or how it is served ("From the Oven," "Cool Platters"), with easy-to-find ingredients and simple-to-follow instructions. Many of the dishes or their components can be made ahead of time.
