Editorial Review:

This celebration of all things Cuban--cigars, bars, rum drinks and music--will delight recent visitors to Cuba and armchair travelers alike.

The almost mythical lure of Cuba has charmed an abundance of tourists and famous visitors like Ernest Hemingway, who drank daiquiris at the now-famous Floridita bar. Rum Drinks & Havanas depicts the legendary Cuban bars and delicious daiquiris and mojitos that were created in them. Not only does it share the differences between various brands of rum, how rum is made, and the affects of aging, but it details recipes for over thirty traditional and inimitable drinks, including the Cuba Libre, a melange of daiquiris, and the Havana Special. Several recipes are variations based on the Floridita's famous patron or its bartender-Papa Hemingway Daiquiri and Daiquiri Don Rolando, amongthem.

This book tells the tale of the unequaled Havana cigar-Cohibas and Montecristos-and it describes the secrets of growing tobacco and rolling cigars. It divulges how to buy and consume them in a discriminating way, and it details the differences between them. Mark Twain believed in a good cigar when he said, "If they don't allow cigar smoking inheaven, I don't want to go there."

Cuba is also known for its bustling city life and carnivals-a celebration of the moment. Enjoy the mythical allure of Cuba with this charming book depicting all aspects of thisCaribbean island and inviting you to share in its drinks, cigars, and music.

The Ecuador Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Very well-written in English and Spanish. Provides concise instructions on how to prepare each delicious dish, and all ingredients are easy to find. What's most important: the writers (Buchanan and Franco) did a great job in using the same ingredients and preparation typical of the Ecuadorian Cuisine, exactly as my grandmother used to make. This book is perfect for the amateur gourmets and "coinosseurs" who enjoy good food (La buena mesa). My husband (not Ecuadorian, like me) has also fallen in love with Ecuadorian food. Smart man!... Please keep writing about Ecuadorian food!

World Culture Cooking and a Spanish Lesson, too! 5 out of 5 stars.

I think this is an excellent cookbook for adding culture to your recipes and everyday eating. The illustrations are outstanding and create a mouth-watering desire to make the recipes. The recipes are rated from easy-to more time-consuming so its very helpful in planning. Bi-lingual recipes make it accessible to a variety of audiences and all of my Spanish-speaking friends here in San Diego. I'm improving my own Spanish from the side-by-side English/Spanish translation!

determined american 4 out of 5 stars.

This cookbook has really helped me in being able to perfect my Puerto Rican cooking. My husband is from the island and I am very determined in trying to be able to cook his authentic food. When he tasted the food, he said that he was quite impressed with the way the way the food turned out. He is not an easy man to please when it comes to his cultural food. This cookbook made it very simple for someone who is not used to that type of cooking or food. I would recommend this to anyone who may also be in my situation or who is just looking to expand their horizons.

Not so Puerto Rican - don't waste your money on this book 1 out of 5 stars.

I have no idea where the authors got those recipes or their ideas about Puerto Rican food, but I am disappointed that I wasted my money on this book. My parents are Puerto Rican and although I was born in New York, I lived in Puerto Rico for 34 years before moving to Maryland in 1998. Believe me, no one in PR uses ginger in their daily meals.... only in teas if their stomach is upset and in desserts like coconut rice pudding. I didn't need this book to learn how to cook Puerto Rican food since I've eaten it all of my life and have been cooking it for 41 years. I bought it just to have a nice collection of our food. I don't even remember where I put because I was so upset about how misleading it is, but I DO know it's not on my bookshelf! The only place you'll find this "new" type of cooking is in a restaurant geared toward the tourist trade, not in a Puerto Rican home. If you want real PR cooking I suggest buying "Puerto Rican Cookery" by Carmen Aboy Valldejuli or "Puerto Rican Dishes" by Berta Cabanillas & Carmen Ginorio to get a more realistic idea of what PR food is all about. It's unfortunate that I couldn't give this book "0" stars.

Editorial Review:

I have seen, and own many cookbooks from my island written in Spanish and English. I have asked many people if they would purchase this type of cookbook. Their responses have demonstrated how very little is known about the culinary aspect of the Caribbean in particularly, my island. The knowledge of the culture and food is remote to many, and the complexity of the recipes preparation could be overwhelming. After much research on this issue, I decided that the book should be written reflecting the Caribbean cooking as being easy, healthy, savory, and attractive to the American taste, but without omitting the essence of the food culture background.

Tropical Cooking Made Easy is a cookbook with a distinctive exotic taste like the island itself. It is a book with unique recipes as its history. The ingredients in the recipes are a blend of the heritage behind the people of the Island of Puerto Rico: Spanish, Indian, and African. The recipes welcome you to explore a world of tropical cuisine full of flavor and zest.

Tropical Cooking Made Easy differs from other cookbooks for the compilation of noteworthy information, such as the origin of island cuisine, the where, and how of the ingredients used in all recipes, history, illustrative photos, information on herbs and condiments, definitions, items with their scientific name, nutritional and natural values and inspirational quotes to ponder while you cook. Each recipe is well organized. It's easy to read, easy to follow, easy to make, with no confusing abbreviations. Instructions are numbered, avoiding errors in preparation. The ingredients are accessible at grocery stores throughout the states. The index is user friendly. Each recipe includes Trick of the Trade, and Traditional Tips to clarify instructions.

Pigeon Peas Rice, Galician Broth, Paella, Spanish Style Pork Roast, Piononos, Spanish Style Steak With Onions and the sinful delightful Spanish Custard dessert, are only a few of the many succulent recipes in this book.

The flavoring and the rich aroma that comes from a mix of zestful ingredients and exquisite meals will keep you making these recipes over and over. Tropical Cooking Made Easy will transcend your cooking experience as if your kitchen was located in the tropics.

Don't bother with this poorly conceived book. 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Here we have more proof that some publishers have no clue how to make a useful cookbook. "A culinary tour" it may be, but this book will have trouble making it off of your shelf and into your kitchen.

I was skeptical of this book from the beginning. It claimed to cover all of Latin America, from the many diverse regions of Mexico and the Caribbean to Brazil and the South American horn. It might be simpler to survey the cuisines of Spain, France, Italy and Greece in one volume than those of dozens of nations stretching through 100 degrees of latitude. The cover was also a bad sign; what is that lovely dish of jalapeños doing floating above the enlarged photo of a flower?

The authors do their best to divide up the continent into sections (Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, the Andes, the Southern Cone and Brazil) and find one or two characteristic dishes from no less than 22 nations. Each section starts with a historical and regional overview, which runs into the recipes for that region, leading to layout problems. Pictures of beaches and brightly-dressed natives give a travel-guide feel that may appeal to some.

The recipes themselves are usually simple and easy enough to make despite short instructions, but they are rarely exciting. Most are not illustrated, but those that are follow the cover picture; the dish floats in the center of a blown-up flower. Oddly, the illustrations did not always match the descriptions, sometimes showing red peppers where the recipe called for green.

In all, a good editor and better layout might have saved this book, but it would still not be a good edition to your cookbook shelf. You would do better with a focused book, such as those on Mexican cooking by Rick Bayless or Diana Kennedy.
