Editorial Review:

“Cornbread? I LOVE cornbread!” For six years, that’s the response Crescent Dragonwagon got when people asked her what she was writing about. Over time, she came to understand: Not only is hot, just baked cornbread delicious, it evokes—powerfully—the heart, soul, and taste of home.

There is an abundance of satisfying cornbreads, as Crescent discovered when she followed the cornbread trail from the Appalachians to the Rockies to the Green Mountains. Traveling to family reunions, potlucks, tortilleras, stone-grinding mills, and the National Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburgh, Tennessee, she heard the stories, tasted the breads, learned the secrets. Join her in this overflowing cornucopia: over 200 irresistible recipes for cornbreads, muffins, fritters, pancakes, and go-withs. Cornbreads from below the Mason-Dixon line (Skillet-Sizzled Buttermilk Cornbread, Truman Capote’s Family’s Alabama Cornbread) meet those from above (Durgin-Park Boston Cornbread, Vermont Maple-Sweetened Cornbread). Southwestern offerings—Chou-Chou’s Dallas Hot Stuff Cornbread, delectable homemade tamales, and tortillas from scratch—meet internationals like India’s Makki Ki Roti. A Thanksgiving with Crescent’s Sweet-Savory Cornbread Dressing is rapturous. Desserts like Very Lemony Gorgeous Cornmeal Pound Cake make any meal exceptional.

Along with this, Crescent gives us the greens, the beans, the salads, stews, and soups that accompany cornbread to perfection. And she tells us the stories, too. Enthusiastic and heartfelt, this thoughtful, exuberant love song to America’s favorite breadstuff and all that goes with it will embrace readers and cooks everywhere.

Editorial Review:

Authors of Heirloom Baking and James Beard Award finalists Marilynn and Sheila Brass launched a whole new cookbook category with their "heirloom" baking recipes. Now they turn their culinary skills to the rest of the menu, presenting delicious, savory, and timeless heirloom dishes collected over decades and updated for the modern kitchen.

Marilynn and Sheila Brass have spent a lifetime collecting handwritten "manuscript cookbooks" and "living recipes." Heirloom Cooking collects and skillfully updates 135 of the very best of these, which together represent nearly 100 years of the best-loved and most delicious dishes from all over North America. The oldest recipes date back to the late 1800s, and every decade and a wide variety of ethnicities are captured here.

The book is divided into sections including Starters; Salads; Vegetables; Breads; Main Dishes including Lamb, Beef, Veal, Pork, Fish, Chicken, and Turkey; Vegetarian; and—of course—Dessert. As they did in Heirloom Baking, the Brass sisters include the wonderful stories behind the recipes, and once again, lush photography is provided by Andy Ryan.

Editorial Review:

Sequel to the bestselling Boy Meets Grill, Boy Gets Grill marks Bobby Flay's return to the fire with his first grilling book in five years.

The connection between Flay and fire began when, as a kid growing up in New York City, Bobby learned to grill during trips to the Jersey Shore. As a young chef starting out, he always wanted to work the grill station, and when he opened his first restaurant in 1991, he called it Mesa Grill. The word grill was firmly hooked to his name. And then, the Food Network called.

Like his highly rated prime-time grilling show, Boy Gets Grill is set on a rooftop in Queens overlooking the Manhattan skyline and celebrates the explosive flavors of his hometown's diverse neighborhoods. This is Bobby Flay's New York, and everywhere he goes, there is great grilling: from Chinatown to Astoria, Queens (Greek food); Arthur Avenue in the Bronx (for old-style Italian); and lower Lexington Avenue (better known as Curry Hill, for Indian); and the flavors go on and on.

The question isn't "Can I grill this?" but "Is there a reason not to grill this?" Usually the answer is "Go ahead and try it!" Throughout, Bobby gets more and more out of the grill, making life easier and encouraging everyone to think big, have fun, and get their hands dirty.

The grill is no longer for weekends only. The recipes in Boy Gets Grill are the quickest and easiest that Bobby has ever created, making the grill a perfect vehicle for busy weeknight meals. Flavors are (pleasantly) challenging. For the simplest of suppers, try Grilled Quesadillas with Sliced Steak, Blue Cheese, and Watercress; Grilled Shrimp with Triple Lemon Butter; Grilled Tuna with Red Chile, Allspice, and Orange Glaze; or a Pressed Cuban-Style Burger.

Boy Gets Grill is also full of great ideas for entertaining and enjoying the company of family and friends. In the "Big Parties" section, Bobby takes hosts and hostesses through every step of preparation for a Fish Taco Party, Burger Bar, and a Skewer Party (perfect for backyard cocktail parties where one hand stays free to hold a glass). There are even recipes for brunch on the grill.

The book includes cool drinks to sip while the fire gets hot, as well as appetizers, salads, simple desserts, and, of course, the meats, fish, and poultry that everyone loves to grill. Bobby also gives tips on what equipment you need to grill (and more important, what you don't); six simple (and decidedly low-tech) steps to test for doneness; how to gauge how hot your fire is; and Bobby's Guide to Steak.

I AM CREOLE AND I LOVE TO COOK. I NORMALLY DON'T USE COOKBOOKS, BUT ONE DAY I WAS AT MY SISTERS HOUSE AND I STARTED READING THIS BOOK. I SAW MYSELF AND MY FAMILY LIFE GROWING UP IN A LITTLE PARISH CALLED CHURCHPOINT. I COULD NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN AND I LITERLY DIDN'T. WHEN I MOVED TO THE NORTHEAST I WAS DEVISTATED BECAUSE I COULD NOT FIND MY COOKBOOK NOT THAT I NEEDED IT ANYMORE I JUST WANTED IT. I AM SO GLAD THAT I WAS ABLE TO BUY THE BOOK AGAIN. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE THAT LOVES TO COOK AND WHO LOVE THE SIMPLE LIFE OF A CREOLE WOMAN.

Great gift and a keeper! 5 out of 5 stars.

Didn't really know about this cookbook, but loved the title. My mother was an amazing cook. Her Houma Indian ancestry prepared her for some of the best eatin' anywhere. I bought this cookbook because I wanted to expand my own repetoire of recipes. Easy to follow, replicate, and cook. I truly enjoyed the vignettes and feel that every cookbook should include the story behind the meal. I gave one for a birthday present to someone from South Louisiana and she loved it. Plus I kept one for myself. You don't have to be from above the Mason Dixon line to either buy it, use it, or cook from it. Highly recommend it.

I love this cookbook. The photography is stunning and the recipes have been consistently great! My favorite so far is the chicken and spinach lasagna (and I don't even like lasagna!). It is a wonderful collection of recipes from the some of the top chefs in Houston (the women in the Junior League)!

Simply fantastic! 5 out of 5 stars.

As a busy career professional, I use this book for everyday and special occasion cooking. It's a fantastic compliment to Stop and Smell the Rosemary which I also have in my Junior League cookbook collection.

Peace Meals is a work of culinary art with beautiful photos and easy elegant dishes. My favorites include the Spicy Rosemary Cashews, White Bean Dip, Ratafia, Beef Tenderloin with Gorgonzola Cheese Sauce, Spinach/Proscutto Flank Steak, Carrot Soup and the Frozen Margarita Pie.

The Junior League of Houston does it again! Simply fantastic.

Editorial Review:

The pictures are mouth-watering and the recipes are easy enough to acomplish. It is such a great book that it got me to go to the restaurant itself.

Editorial Review:

Chef David Waltuck calls Chanterelle "a fantasy of a restaurant, dreamed up by a little, food-loving kid, that somehow, magically, came true." For over 28 years and from two different New York City locations, Chanterelle has broken the boundaries of French cooking, winning over such fans as Gael Greene, Richard Avedon, Keith Haring, and Malcolm Forbes along the way. Now, co-owner and co-founder Waltuck invites you into his bustling kitchen with a sumptuously illustrated cookbook chock-full of the recipes that have made Chanterelle a destination restaurant of international stature. From their signature Seafood Sausage and other fish and shellfish creations to salads and first courses, poultry and rabbit, meat and game, side dishes, and desserts, the book simply overflows with nouvelle cuisine classics. Editorial Review:

The author of the New York Times bestselling Cooked, award-winning chef, and star of his own Food Network docu-reality show dishes up his first cookbook, Chef Jeff Cooks.

Jeff Henderson's story is familiar: Raised in South Central Los Angeles, he became a successful drug dealer. He made a lot of money. He got caught.

But what happened next wasn't the same old story: Jeff changed. He found a passion in prison kitchens and taught himself to cook. Once released, he talked his way into a series of professional kitchens -- almost always having to prove himself by starting as a dishwasher or line cook. His talent was obvious; his work ethic even more so. After rising to the top of the kitchen in some of Los Angeles's best restaurants, he became the first African American Chef de Cuisine in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace and then executive chef at Café Bellagio in the prestigious Bellagio Resort.

Now Jeff shows theworld his food and it is delicious. What inspires him? Foods he ate as a child -- Half-pound "Back-in-the-Day" Chili Cheeseburger, Turkey Smoked Collard Greens, Friendly Fried Chicken, Macaroni and Smoked Cheddar Cheese, Cakelike Cornbread with Maple Butter, and Chocolate S'more Bread Pudding -- are here as well as the more elegant, celebratory cuisine he developed as a chef -- Sweet Potato Soup, Barbecued Shrimp Scampi, and slow-cookedMolasses Braised Beef Short Ribs. Cooks will also find lots of great recipes for the grill and plenty of party foods, satisfying salads, quick breads, sides, soups, sweet endings, and more.

Featuring over 150 recipes, stunning full-color photographs, tips and techniques, as well as personal outtakes and anecdotes from Chef Jeff's life on the streets, the prison kitchen, and hiswork as a chef andmotivational speaker, this is much more than a cookbook -- it is a larger-than-life American success story and the recipe for how Chef Jeff fulfilled his dream.

A fresh look at Cranberry Cuisine 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I have read many cookbooks which include cranberry recipes, but none with such an extensive look into the magnificent fruit. Mrs. Cappelloni provides the reader with an enlightening view on the subject of cranberries. I would say it is certainly the best single subject cookbook I have ever encountered. I recommend it to all.

Editorial Review:

If so, you will love this colorful, high-quality cookbook, featuring cranberries as the star attraction in 125 innovative recipes. Here are easy-to-follow recipes for meat and poultry dishes, sauces, desserts, breads, cakes, stuffing, relishes, beverages, and preserves.
