Editorial Review:

What would you give to see the notes Julia Child keeps in her handwritten loose-leaf kitchen reference guide? Your wish is granted! This clever little volume was inspired by Child's notebook, compiled from her own "trials, remedies, and errors."

Organized by large category and technique, it's a very handy reference guide for anyone reasonably comfortable in the kitchen. Each section contains a master recipe followed by variations. The emphasis is on technique, so if you occasionally find yourself trying to remember at what temperature to best roast a duck, the best way to cook green beans and keep them green, or how to save your hollandaise, then this is the book for you. And what good is a reference guide without an index? As always, Child comes to our rescue with a fantastic, comprehensive index, 19 pages long for 107 pages of text, so we can find the answers to life's burning questions in a flash.

Part of what makes Julia Child such an icon is that she can describe a complicated dish, and in the next breath convince us to make it. Classic Chocolate Mousse, Sabayon, Scalloped Potatoes Savoyarde, and Butterflied Leg of Lamb sound manageable when they follow recipes for Roast Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, and Scrambled Eggs. And with Child's help, they are. "Quick, snappy answers" for both basic and complicated cooking questions make this a work we'll never outgrow. And if Julia can use a cheat sheet, so can we! Fans of Child will love that her personality shows through in comments like, "Don't crowd the pan... or you'll be sorry," and, to introduce her Basic Vinaigrette Dressing, "I use the proportions of a very dry martini." Eight pages of photos taken by her husband, Paul, including one of Child with the famous dancing goose, make this even more of a treasure.

If there is anyone qualified to offer kitchen wisdom, it must be Julia Child. After a lifetime of cooking and teaching, her knowledge is a perfect gift for fans, novices, or anyone responsible for putting dinner on the table every night. --Leora Y. Bloom

Editorial Review:

The annual Fredericksburg Christmas parade marks the beginning of the Hill Country's holiday season, which means the Pastry Queen is kicking into high gear at her Rather Sweet Bakery and Café. As party invitations pile up in the mailbox, Rebecca Rather is up to her elbows in sticky meringue, gooey chocolate, and a sleigh's worth of savory indulgences to meet the Texas-sized entertaining-to-go orders of her neighbors. In THE PASTRY QUEEN CHRISTMAS, Rebecca shares nearly a hundred traditional recipes reflecting her made-with-love-from-scratch philosophy and the tastes of small-town Texas. Tree-trimming, open houses, cookie decorating, and Santas running down Main Street . . . Christmas time is here.

Editorial Review:

A backyard-loving guy, Al Roker's passionate about firing up all three of his grills at once and cooking everything from Steaks As Big As Your Head and Kansas City-Style Ribs to Grilled Sea Bass.

The hundred recipes in this book are casual and simple -- just the way Al likes to cook for his family and friends. Like most of us, Al first learned to grill at the knee of his dad, whose policy was "the more lighter fluid, the better." But a trip to the Memphis in May Barbecue Championship ignited a real passion, and since then Al's grills have rarely grown cold. And while Al does have some hard-and-fast rules, like "don't keep moving your meat around" and "never touch another man's grill," his food is simple yet inventive, impressive and delicious.

In addition to great stuff for over the fire -- Jerk Chicken, Marinated Pork Tenderloin, Kebabs Cooked Right, New Orleans-Style Barbecued Shrimp, Fish Fillets with Lemon-Parsley Sauce, Turkey on the Grill, and, from "The Wurst City in the World," Sheboygan Bratwurst -- Al Roker's Big Bad Book of Barbecue has something for everyone, including recipes for quick-and-easy starters, marinades, main-dish salads, sides, classic American desserts, cooling drinks, vegetarian dishes, and low-fat fare.

So lean back in that lawn chair and have a sip of Lemon-Lime Fizz. Munch on a Spicy Wing or some BBQ Popcorn. That brisket should take care of itself in another hour or so.

Beverly Lewis Does It Again 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this for my landlady, she said she hasn't cooked from it yet, but she loves it, we both looked through it when it arrived and we loved the little notes from Beverly Lewis, the recipes look delicious and very down to earth, my husband loves to watch the food channel but so much of it is too fancy and strange ingredients, that stinks! I will probably buy this sometime for myself. It is a lovely cookbook, and I recommend it to anyone who likes Beverly Lewis, Cooking, or collecting cookbooks, it is a must have. Go for it you'll not regret it. Have fun in your kitchen.

Editorial Review:

A homespun, authentic collection of Amish recipes collected over the years by Beverly Lewis. Many are from her grandmother and other family members as well as dear friends from the Amish world she writes about with such power and authenticity. Now she lovingly shares these with her millions of readers who have come to treasure her ¹ctional insights into Amish life. The additional Amish sayings and line drawings make for an appealing gift.

Join Texas food writer Robb Walsh on a grand tour complete with larger-than-life characters, colorful yarns, rare archival photographs, and a savory assortment of crispy, crunchy Tex-Mex foods.

From the Mexican pioneers of the sixteenth century, who first brought horses and cattle to Texas, to the Spanish mission era when cumin and garlic were introduced, to the 1890s when the Chile Queens of San Antonio sold their peppery stews to gringos like O. Henry and Ambrose Bierce, and through the chili gravy, combination plates, crispy tacos, and frozen margaritas of the twentieth century, all the way to the nuevo fried oyster nachos and vegetarian chorizo of today, here is the history of Tex-Mex in more than 100 recipes and 150 photos.

Rolled, folded, and stacked enchiladas, old-fashioned puffy tacos, sizzling fajitas, truck-stop chili, frozen margaritas, Frito™ Pie, and much, much more, are all here in easy-to-follow recipes for home cooks.

The Tex-Mex Cookbook will delight chile heads, food history buffs, Mexican food fans, and anybody who has ever woken up in the middle of the night craving cheese enchiladas.

Delicious, full-color guide to grilling 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Weber is known for great grills and who better to make a cookbook on getting the most out of them. Weber's Art of the Grill is filled with huge, full color photographs of just about every recipe offered, which is a must-have trait for me that many cookbooks lack. The recipies are definitely a little on the "high brow" side, so if you are really just looking for new ways to make burgers and dogs this is not the book for you. But if things like swordfish with mango salsa sound good to you, pick this up right away!

Great Recipe and Idea Book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book for any grill afficiendo...lot's of great ideas, including literally every course, from appetizers to desserts!

Worth the money.

Some of the best grilling recipes available 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book when it first came out several years ago. At that time it sort of intimidated me and it sat unused on the shelf until recently. What prompted me to take another look was the acquisition of a new Weber Performer. The astute will recognize that the Performer is a charcoal grill and that this book is based on gas grilling. Frankly, this book is all about recipes; really, really good recipes. Anyone familiar with charcoal cooking will be able to build a low, medium, or hot fire and make the adjustment to use this book. Believe me it is no big deal and you will be rewarded with some of the best food you ever tasted. The author of this book, Jamie Purviance, really knows what he is doing. I would say that this book is tailored to the intermediate to advanced cook. The recipes are complete, but the instructions assume a certain level of competence. For someone just starting out, I think the Cook's Illustrated grilling book is an excellent addition as it takes the reader step by step through not just the recipe, but also the techniques necessary to cook the food. The CI book covers both gas and charcoal for each and every recipe, too, which can help the reader of the Art of the Grill adjust for charcoal. I find both books indispensable with the Art of the Grill offering superior recipes, and the CI book offering superior techniques.

Editorial Review:

In Weber's Art of the Grill, America's pre-eminent grill manufacturer shares the tips, tools, and techniques that can maximize your grill's potential-and make outdoor cooking a breeze. Offers over a hundred grilling recipes accompanied by lavish photographs.

Puttin' On The Dog! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

First off, you're going to need two copies of this book: one for the kitchen and one for your glove box. One for the kitchen and one for the road!

Becky Mercuri, as in all her other fine books, has once again gone above and beyond in her quest to document the historical authenticity, modern day excellence, and (with apologies to A.B.) just plane ol' good eats!

The Great American Hot Dog Book does for hot dogs what hot sauce did for the lowly chicken wing: it takes the common and turns it into the exceptional! No matter your station in life, you'll never be able to look down your nose at the hot dog ever again! The recipes that Ms Becky has researched, tested, and then included in this book will see to it that you won't!

She has done a great job of providing us with the knowledge and recipes that examine and celebrate the various regional differences and preferences for hot dogs across this great land of ours. And there are some undeniable difference, for sure. Just ask any hot dog vendor in Chicago for ketchup on your dog and see what happens...

This is a great book on a great American tradition.

Thank you Becky Mercuri for another outstanding resource on traditional American food.

Editorial Review:

Americans consume around 20 billion hot dogs a year so you can find them anywhere. This fun book is loaded with frank recipes from across the nation plus recipes for out-of-this-world fries, sauces, sides and more! This book takes you on a tour of each state & reveals the inside story of where the hot dog originated & how it became one of America's favorite food icons. This collectible cookbook is not only a handy road-trip guide, but it also shares America's most legendary receipes for not only weiners, but sauces, chilis, slaws, relishes, side dishes and more! Softcover, 144 pages.

Editorial Review:

Warmly effusive and dear yet gritty, Paula H. Deen seems mythically Southern. But this cooking luminary, proprietor of Savannah, Georgia's Lady & Sons restaurant, is the real thing. The Lady & Sons Just Desserts, her all-sweets follow-up to The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook and The Lady & Sons, Too!, celebrates the Southern sweet tooth with 120 recipes, including traditional formulas for the likes of Brown Sugar Pound Cake and Lemon Chess Pie as well as best-loved restaurant innovations like Turtle Cake, Lemon Curd Pudding, and Gooey Butter Cake. ("These are very, very rich," Deen advises, "and a little goes a long way--even for piggies like me!") Lovers of the restaurant--which grew to prominence from $200 and lots of determination--as well as those seeking easy-to-fix temptations should put this book to happy use.

Among its wide-ranging recipes, Desserts offers Carolyn's Jell-O Cheesecake, Lauren's Chocolate Drizzle Pie, and Hidden Mint Cookies--recipes based on cake mixes and other convenience foods. These creditable sweets are of course work saving, but are perhaps better viewed as solidly characteristic of their time and place. Equally particular are candies like Mamma's Divinity and Uncle Bubba's Benne Candy, and "other sweet things," as Deen dubs them, such as Banana Split Brownie Pizza, Easy Homemade Oreo Ice Cream, and Fresh Apples with Butterscotch Dip. With asides by Deen family members, including son Jamie's "Food Is Love" ("I am right this minute 20 pounds over-loved," he writes), useful tips (Deen provides an "emergency" recipe for sweetened condensed milk), and plenty of piquant anecdote (after Deen had rattled on endlessly to her grandmother about her intention to open a restaurant, the older woman paused and replied, "Paula, have you lost you damned mind?"), the spiral-bound book is not only full of delectable eating, it's lots of fun. --Arthur Boehm

A Great Escape! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is my all-time favorite book by Susan Branch! The recipes, the ideas, the personal stories all bring it home. When the dog-days of summer hit I reach for my copy and escape ~ she has so many ideas that don't take a lot of pre-prep. Her recipes are great (try the potato salad or the pacific coast peelers). A great addition to anyones cooking library and a must for those soon-to-be-brides! I have even given this book as a hostess thank you. You won't be disappointed!

Captures the feeling of summer perfectly 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Susan Branch is a talented woman. Her cookbooks are beautifully illustrated with her drawings throughout. Her stories convey a warm sense of family and fun and will make you daydream about summer even in August.

Her recipes are simple and fairly easy to make and she leans heavily towards family friendly comfort foods with a little bit of pizazz. In fact, it is her ideas for presentation that make some of the recipes so special (the Bowl of Vegetables comes to mind...a simple twist on crudite that is elegant and delicious).

Those with picky children may find this book to be a surprising source of ideas (Lemon Linguini, Corn Salad, Lemon Chicken, Sweet Potato Fries, Kiwi Cups and Tortilla Roll-ups to name a few).

Her recipe for Crab Cakes is very good as is the one for Fish Tacos. Her recipes for vegetables are among her best; very simple and often quick ways to make vegetables special without drowning them in anything.

The Profiteroles recipe is my husbands favorite; the shells are simple to make and freeze very well. I love to make the Crostini for parties, the recipe is very flexible and all of the variations are a treat.

I love that she is not afraid to mix ideas and food and drawings and inspirational sayings all together in one book. You might not think that a quote from Gandi and a recipe for Jell-o shots could co-exist, but they do, and it works.
