Learn from a master 5 out of 5 stars.

You can buy lots of books on how to cook barbeque, but very few from accomplished masters such as Paul Kirk. Only two things surpass his ego in this book: His willingness to share some great recipes and insights, and his recipes themselves.

Pretty much every sauce, marinade, and relish I tried from this book turned out great. It's no surprise to me that Paul Kirk is so accomplished with several bold and unique recipes. Don't miss the orange-chile marinade, which he used to win a barbeque contest in Ireland.

I should mention that the book has a strong Kansas City-style slant to the barbeque, although Paul Kirk does make an effort to include different regional styles.

In addition to the recipes, Kirk provides "Master Classes" on barbeque sauces, rubs, and marinades. I took this opportunity to develop my special secret rub with secret spices reflecting my partly Greek heritage. Following Kirk's "Master Class" on rubs, I concocted a rub that I hoped would create gold in my Weber kettle. Have I developed a killer rub to take the barbeque contest circuit by storm? Well, probably not, but it was fun giving it a whirl, and if I say so myself, the results were pretty good.

But if you ask me, most of the fun of barbequing is coming up with secret recipes, and putting your own stamp on things, and Paul Kirk has got me going.

Editorial Review:

Paul Kirk has been participating in barbecue competitions for 15 years. He has been named World Barbecue Champion seven times. If you are really serious about barbecuing, Paul Kirk's Championship Barbecue Sauces will help you learn about slow-cooking meat over smoke and teach what you need to know to start approaching barbecuing like a pro. Along with teaching about all the ingredients useful in making rubs, marinades, sauces, and salsas to accompany barbecued meat, Kirk's approach gives a sense of what barbecue competitions are all about. (One of Kirk's goals for this book is to help those who are interested join in and compete.) Recipes are bold and bursting with flavor.

Stop and Smell the Rosemary 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I have collected cookbooks for the past 45 years, and this is absolutely one of the BEST!!! It is beautifully illustrated and full of unusual recipes. So far every one I've tried has been delicious and easy to follow. I'm ordering five more to have on hand for gifts.

Editorial Review:

There is nothing amateurish about Stop and Smell the Rosemary, which won first prize in the McIlhenny community cookbook competition for 1996. (McIlhenny are the folks from Louisiana who bring you Tabasco sauce.) The theme of this handsome book is food suited to today's style of entertaining. Dishes are classy and simple. Most are familiar, but with a twist that works. It's hard to go wrong with Ginger Shrimp Toast, any of the fine roasts and stews, or desserts like Pecan Chocolate Chunk Brownies. Recipes are supposedly quadruple-tested and it looks like the Houston Junior League has a passel of good cooks based on the useful hints and technical tips they pass along in side notes. There are recipes with local character, like Texas White Chili and Fried Okra, and distinctive dishes like $10 Hamburgers and Mangaspacho. Think of this book when you need to give a gift.

perfect for beginners 5 out of 5 stars.

I received a pressure cooker as a gift and was totally intimidated by the all the noise and rattles. The Dummies series is perfect to get over the hurdles of a new cooking technique. I've worked through the basics and now use my pressure cooker to make wonderful stews and soups. The risotto recipe works great and I've finally used up the 2 year old aborio rice in my pantry left over from a paella fest. I'm now moving onto some other pressure cooker books to expand my selections but I'll still come back to the dummies book to cover the basics.

THE GRILLIN' GURU IS BACK! 5 out of 5 stars.
36 of 38 people found this review helpful.

Steve Raichlen is the Grillin' guru and author of such books as BBQ USA, The Barbeque Bible and more. In this book, Steve tackles the problem that those of us in the frozen north face every year at this time. The snows on the ground, it's 15 degrees, and none of us wants to leave the warm comforts of our home to go out and fire up the grill.

No problem. Steve presents a cookbook with us in mind. These are recipes of outside grills that Steve gives us an equivalent to make using electric grills, stove top grills, even fireplace rotisseries to make these great recipes. Steve's book covers all the usual suspects including Beef, Chicken, seafood, veggies, sauces, appetizers and more, all designed to be prepared on whatever indoor grilling aplliance you choose to use. Steve also provides mucho helpful information on all of the indoor grilling machines and how to get the best use AND taste out of them.

Unless you have a fireplace, and I don't, you might not be able to really duplicate the taste of Mesquite or applewood, but you can still mare some darn good BBq in the dead of winter. And the Superbowl is only a few weeks away!

This is a great book. I made the strawberry cake that is on the cover for Thanksgiving and it was delicious! Everybody raved about it. I also love the stories that also go along with the recipes. A great buy!

Only cookbook I've ever read cover to cover! 5 out of 5 stars.

Patty Pinner's childhood comes to life through her stories & recipes, and her "womanly" advice adds charm to her cakes and pies. I have to admit, this is the only cookbook that has found it's place on my bedside table because of the great stories and old family photographs.

Editorial Review:

Growing up in a large African-American family in a small town in Michigan, Patty Pinner spent her childhood helping the women of the house--the Queens of Soul Food--whip up the sweet treats that crowned family dinners, neighborhood gatherings, and church socials. In SWEETS, Patty shares her family's stories, maxims, and magical desserts, many named after family members like Cud'n Daisy, Aint Sug, and My My, her beloved grandmother. Part recipe book, part family history, this sweet-as-can-be cookbook is a heartfelt tribute to women who ruled the home and the kitchen with their wisdom, hearts, and cooking.

Editorial Review:

Tom Douglas loves Seattle and Seattle loves Tom Douglas. The owner of and force behind three popular restaurants (Dahlia Lounge, Etta's Seafood, and Palace Kitchen), Douglas has made an in-depth study of Pacific Northwest foodstuffs and culinary influences--basically the man has happily eaten his way through the city for the past 25 years and then, to Seattleites' delight, has applied his knowledge to his restaurants. "With this book, we hope to communicate our experience of Seattle," says Douglas. "We want to share our thriving food scene with you--you can get on a plane and come see us or you can use this book to create your own 'Seattle' in your kitchen."

Douglas focuses on using fresh, in-season ingredients in all his recipes. "My philosophy is: eat it when you've got it, enjoy the harvest when it's here," he says. In Seattle, that means Grilled Asparagus with Hazelnut-Star Anise Mayonnaise in the spring, Sake-Steamed Sockeye Salmon with Sake Butter with Oregon Pinot Noir Raspberry Sorbet on a summer evening, or the year-round favorite, Dungeness crab. Try Crab Salad with Asparagus, Avocado, and Lime Vinaigrette or Wok-Fried Crab with Ginger and Lemongrass. Use Washington State apples in Parsnip-Apple Hash or Maple-Cured Double-Cut Pork Chops with Grilled Apple Rings and Creamy Corn Grits. Douglas offers plenty of savory vegetarian dishes such as Potato Gnocchi with Roasted Tomatoes and Gorgonzola Cream, Wild Mushroom Ravioli with Arugula Salad, and Tuscan Bread Salad with Fresh Mozzarella and Basil (a perennial favorite at the Dahlia Lounge).

Like a walk through the fish and vegetable stalls at Pike Place Market, Tom Douglas' Seattle Kitchen is fresh, inspiring, and filled with aromatic ideas. His prose is relaxed, colloquial, and encouraging--cook, eat, and enjoy are his basic tenets--and the book is filled with photos of Seattle life and institutions. Whether you live in the Emerald City or the Windy City, Tom Douglas' Seattle Kitchen will spark your imagination and enliven your palate. --Dana Van Nest

Juggling work, school, family, and home seems to be the norm in today’s hurried world. Many of us often grab a quick bite and keep on moving, sidelining healthful eating habits and nutrition. How wonderful it would be to wind down after a long, hard day with a wholesome, home-cooked meal. Now, the American Heart Association, America’s most trusted authority on heart-healthy living and diet, presents a brand-new cookbook that can help. Arranged by category—meat, poultry, seafood, or vegetarian—each recipe includes nutrients essential for heart-healthy living. You’ll find everything from weeknight dinners to special-occasion favorites—from stews, meat loaf, and pot roasts to cassoulets, enchiladas, and even a tagine. All you need is one dish and this cookbook, and in no time at all, you’ll have a healthful, home-cooked meal.

A Great Escape! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is my all-time favorite book by Susan Branch! The recipes, the ideas, the personal stories all bring it home. When the dog-days of summer hit I reach for my copy and escape ~ she has so many ideas that don't take a lot of pre-prep. Her recipes are great (try the potato salad or the pacific coast peelers). A great addition to anyones cooking library and a must for those soon-to-be-brides! I have even given this book as a hostess thank you. You won't be disappointed!

Captures the feeling of summer perfectly 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Susan Branch is a talented woman. Her cookbooks are beautifully illustrated with her drawings throughout. Her stories convey a warm sense of family and fun and will make you daydream about summer even in August.

Her recipes are simple and fairly easy to make and she leans heavily towards family friendly comfort foods with a little bit of pizazz. In fact, it is her ideas for presentation that make some of the recipes so special (the Bowl of Vegetables comes to mind...a simple twist on crudite that is elegant and delicious).

Those with picky children may find this book to be a surprising source of ideas (Lemon Linguini, Corn Salad, Lemon Chicken, Sweet Potato Fries, Kiwi Cups and Tortilla Roll-ups to name a few).

Her recipe for Crab Cakes is very good as is the one for Fish Tacos. Her recipes for vegetables are among her best; very simple and often quick ways to make vegetables special without drowning them in anything.

The Profiteroles recipe is my husbands favorite; the shells are simple to make and freeze very well. I love to make the Crostini for parties, the recipe is very flexible and all of the variations are a treat.

I love that she is not afraid to mix ideas and food and drawings and inspirational sayings all together in one book. You might not think that a quote from Gandi and a recipe for Jell-o shots could co-exist, but they do, and it works.
