I was a bit dissappointed 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was a bit dissapppointed. I purchased this cook book thinking it was a cook book that featured all of the food found in California Pizza Kitchen Restaurants. Well needless to say my favorite Salad is not featured in this book. I always enjoy a Field Green Salad with Gorgonzola cheese this salad is not listed in the book...Putting together the salad is a breeze...I just wish I knew the ingredients to the dressing that makes it all worth while!

If you are only interested in the actual Pizza & Pasta recipes then this is still a great buy!!!

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

After the tremendous success of her novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, and the beloved movie that followed, author Fannie Flagg received thousands of requests from all over the world asking for recipes from the little cafe of her Alabama childhood that was the model for the cafe in her novel. Now, she joyfully shares those recipes, in what may well be the first cookbook ever written by a satisfied customer rather than a cook! Inside you'll find wonderful recipes for:

* Skinless Fried Chicken * Pork Chops with Apples and Sweet Potatoes * Baked Ham and Pineapple Rings * Baked Turkey with Traditional Cornbread Dressing * Black-eyed Peas * Fried Okra * Creamed Onions * Broccoli Casserole * Southern Cream Gravy * Fried Catfish * Scalloped Oysters * Down Home Crab Cakes * Beaten Biscuits * Corn Pones * Lemon Ice Box Pie * Kentucky Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie * And much more!

The recipes in Fannie Flagg's Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook are all for delicious hearty happy food that comes with all sorts of things, from gravies to hot sauces (very often the secret's in the sauce). But most of all this food, and this book, comes with love.

Chef Folse's seventh cookbook is the authoritative collection on Louisiana's culture and cuisine. The book features more than 850 full-color pages, dynamic historical Louisiana photographs and more than 700 recipes. You will not only find step-by-step directions to preparing everything from a roux to a cochon de lait, but you will also learn about the history behind these recipes. Cajun and Creole cuisine was influenced by seven nations that settled Louisiana, from the Native Americans to the Italian immigrants of the 1800s. Learn about the significant contributions each culture made-okra seeds carried here by African slaves, classic French recipes recalled by the Creoles, the sausage-making skills of the Germans and more. Relive the adventure and romance that shaped Louisiana, and recreate the recipes enjoyed in Cajun cabins, plantation kitchens and New Orleans restaurants. Chef Folse has hand picked the recipes for each chapter to ensure the very best of seafood, game, meat, poultry, vegetables, salads, appetizers, drinks and desserts are represented. From the traditional to the truly unique, you will develop a new understanding and love of Cajun and Creole cuisine. The Encyclopedia would make a perfect gift or simply a treasured addition to your own cookbook library.

Only cookbook I've ever read cover to cover! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Patty Pinner's childhood comes to life through her stories & recipes, and her "womanly" advice adds charm to her cakes and pies. I have to admit, this is the only cookbook that has found it's place on my bedside table because of the great stories and old family photographs.

Best Dessert Cookbook EVER! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Foolproof recipes with entertaining family stories. Every recipe I've tried has turned out perfectly (with the exception of the slow-cooked caramel icing) so this is my new Dessert Bible!

Warm memories and sweet soul food 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Patty Pinner, author of the recent Sweety Sweety Pies: An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations, with Pie, revisits the sweet desserts of her childhood in her first book Sweets, along with memories of growing up in Saginaw and of her family from Mississippi. The book is graced with vintage black-and-white snapshots of the author and her family (she has the most captivating, confident smile as a little girl) that illustrate the many down-home, Southern soul food staples: puddings, cobblers, pies, rich cakes, homemade candy, cookies, and ice cream. But the stories nearly upstage the desserts: tales of fanatically clean relatives, childhood birthday parties, the mysterious lives of grownups, and the lives of various family members intertwine with the comforting desserts of a Southern legacy (pecans, molasses, coconut and brown sugar all have starring roles).

Some of the more unusual offerings include a Dr. Pepper cake (there's Dr. Pepper in both the cake and the frosting; it adds moistness, similar to a Coca-Cola cake), a sweet potato cheesecake, a lemon rum cake, and recipes born from thrift, such as butter bean pie, mashed potato and bean fudges, and little of nothing pie (milk, sugar, flour, vanilla, butter and cinnamon).

The ingredients are items that are probably sitting in your pantry or cabinets right now, so there's no reason not to give some of these wonderful heirloom recipes a try; why not sample some old-fashioned walnut-raisin pie, black walnut brittle, old-fashioned sweet potato pone, or a slice of walnut wonder cake? If you like homemade candy, there are many recipes for nut brittles (black walnut, cashew, peanut), peanut butter candy, and pralines. Ditto on homemade ice cream: you'll find soothing favorites such as banana, an intense lemon, peach, strawberry, and vanilla ice creams, along with some tantalizing sauces (rum sauce, caramel wine syrup).

Honestly, even if you never try a single recipe, this is a beautiful tribute to family, soul food, and a snapshot of Saginaw in the 1950s-60s. Pinner's writing style is engaging and friendly, and you'll find yourself happily crowded around her family's dinner table swapping gossip with her various female relatives as you try to decide which dessert to sample first.

AN OUTSTANDING BOOK OF BARBECUE 5 out of 5 stars.
46 of 47 people found this review helpful.

I've read and reviewed a lot of books on barbecue. Everything from the books by well-known chefs and TV personalities to the small-press regional titles and everything in between. Mastering Barbecue from Ten Speed Press isn't the biggest, it isn't the prettiest, but it is, simply, one of the best books on barbecue that I have ever read. Many barbecue books will give you the basics on different grill types and methods but Mastering Barbecue goes into great depth on these subjects as well as BBQ terminology, food prep, cleanup and maintenance, cooking times and temperatures, types of wood to use, smoking, and much, much more.

Mastering Barbecue isn't lavishly illustrated with color photographs on slick, glossy paper. This is strictly a no-frills book that goes for punch over pizzazz and succeeds on all counts. The strength of this book lies with its vast selection of recipes for rubs, marinades and sauces. All told there are over 160 recipes for these staples of Barbecue cooking. This is particularly noteworthy as far as the rubs which is the first step in preparing any meat for great barbecue. Most cookbooks may provide just a handful of rub recipes but Mastering Barbecue gives you over 60 culled from a variety of different regions both domestic an abroad. For example you'll find the Simple South Texas Rub, a Phoenix Rub, Kansas City Rub and a Latin American Rub.

Marinades are another item that usually get short-changed in a lot of cookbooks but this book has over 50 great marinades and mop sauces, all designed to add great flavor to your food. Like it hot? Then try the Habanero Hot Sauce marinade. There's also the North Carolina Vinegar mop and the Spicy Beer Marinade.

The sauces are my favorite part of the book with over 50 great sauce recipes again taken from various regions to lend some authenticity to you food and also allow you to try different meats done in different regional styles. There's a great Spicy Texas sauce with jalapeno peppers, fresh lime and beer; The Citrus BBQ Sauce features a variety of fruit juices including lemon, lime, and orange along with smoky chipotle peppers. Or try the Kentucky Black Sauce made with a liberal amount of Kentucky bourbon, Worcestershire and soy sauces. No matter what your taste you are sure to find several sauces you'll love.

The book then goes on with chapters on beef, poultry, pork, ribs, seafood and veggies. They all include helpful advice on buying these items, preparation, cooking, as well as the best woods to use to enhance the flavor. I highly recommend the Mesquite grilled chicken breasts with citrus sauce. The recipes here are not the kind of executive chef-created dishes that will have you scouring gourmet food stores to locate ingredients and requiring advanced techniques. These are good, everyday recipes with ingredients that can be found at your local market and that can be made by even novice barbecue cooks. The book is well-written and informative and includes an excellent cross-referenced index. This is one that stands apart in a sea of Barbecue cookbooks. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

Anything that can be cooked inside the kitchen can be cooked outside with more fun and more flavour. Mastering Barbecue is the primer for introducing barbecue into one's culinary repertoire. Compiling more than a decade's worth of recipes and expertise from veteran grill masters, professional chefs, and barbecue enthusiasts, Michael Stines packs a whole lot more than just marinades into this comprehensive handbook.

One of my favorite cookbooks! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I always go here first when I'm looking for something new, and many of our family's favorite recipes are in this book. I've given countless copies as gifts, which are always appreciated once the recipients start trying out the recipes. We discovered this treasure when my sister went to LSU years ago (we lived in Connecticut at the time), and have been grateful ever since. We also use all of the subsequent River Road editions.

Best Southern cookbook period 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am from the South. Cooking is a hobby and I collect cookbooks. I have had this book for about 30 years. In my opinion, this is the best all around Southern cookbook you can buy. In addition, it contains the best Creole recipes.

When I look through a cookbook, the first thing I check is that the ingredients are correct. It is amazing how wrong some can be. This cook book sets the standard.

There are about 3 later editions of this book which are good, but they do not compare to this, the original.

You will be more successful if you can try an authentic Creole dish before you try to make one yourself. That way you will know what you are aiming for.

Editorial Review:

River Road Recipes is the nation's #1 best-selling community cookbook series. This cookbook features classic creole and cajun cuisine. These 650 recipes include the basics like "how to make a roux". This is the "Textbook of Louisiana cooking".

Wonderful in all respects- the recipes are excellent ways to fix good substantial food, written understandably. Outstanding pictures and commentary. I have been a Texas Panhandle cowboy and New Mexico rancher.
Have cooked for hunters and working crews and own an extensive array of gourmet cookbooks. This is the one used for our recent holiday, and I have given 3 of them to friends since. Don't think this is rough food - it's the kind that everybody loves.

Editorial Review:

Spicy. Sweet. Tasty. Tart. No . . . we’re not talking about the lovely ladies of Wisteria Lane, but their cooking. Bree, Susan, Lynette, and Gabrielle may not be traditional housewives, but they do have their special talents in the kitchen. In The Desperate Housewives Cookbook, they share those recipes . . . and so much more!

Tune in to ABC’s monster hit Desperate Housewives on any given Sunday night, and you’ll salivate over everything from Bree’s über-gourmet repasts to Susan’s what’s-a-spatula simple suppers. They may have wildly different personalities and story lines, but if there’s one thing the four heroines have in common, it’s food. In The Desperate Housewives Cookbook, the show’s millions of fans will find recipes for all the foods made famous by the show, as well as many others inspired by each housewife. For example:

-Bree’s elegant, impressive dinners feature dishes like Basil Purée Soup, Braised Duck, and Chicken Cutlets Saltimbocca.

-Lynette’s time-challenged lifestyle leads to quick, healthy, everyday fare like French Toast for Breakfast (or Dinner) with Blueberry Syrup; Warm Turkey, Muenster, and Coleslaw Wraps; and Potato Casserole.

-Susan’s lack of kitchen skills means that her dishes are of the couldn’t-be-simpler (but still mouthwatering) variety, like a Salad of Roasted Peppers, Fresh Mozzarella, and Arugula; Foolproof Macaroni and Cheese; Chocolate Butterscotch Bars; and Garlic Mashed Potatoes.

-Gabrielle enjoys the finest things in life -- and food is no exception. Her meals are gourmet, and most definitely prepared by a personal chef. Her faves include Shrimp with Chorizo and Red Pepper, Guacamole with Warm Chips, and Pineapple-Peach Smoothies.

-Edie uses food for seduction as much as for sustenance. Her sensual favorites include Oysters Poached in Champagne and Cream, Sausage Puttanesca, and Ambrosia.
