Editorial Review:

After the tremendous success of her novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, and the beloved movie that followed, author Fannie Flagg received thousands of requests from all over the world asking for recipes from the little cafe of her Alabama childhood that was the model for the cafe in her novel. Now, she joyfully shares those recipes, in what may well be the first cookbook ever written by a satisfied customer rather than a cook! Inside you'll find wonderful recipes for:

* Skinless Fried Chicken * Pork Chops with Apples and Sweet Potatoes * Baked Ham and Pineapple Rings * Baked Turkey with Traditional Cornbread Dressing * Black-eyed Peas * Fried Okra * Creamed Onions * Broccoli Casserole * Southern Cream Gravy * Fried Catfish * Scalloped Oysters * Down Home Crab Cakes * Beaten Biscuits * Corn Pones * Lemon Ice Box Pie * Kentucky Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie * And much more!

The recipes in Fannie Flagg's Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook are all for delicious hearty happy food that comes with all sorts of things, from gravies to hot sauces (very often the secret's in the sauce). But most of all this food, and this book, comes with love.

Gorgeous pictures, in depth content, delicious recipe 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I have had this book for over a year and have tried several of his recipes which all comes out great. It is one of the few cookboos that I have which I use often. The recipes are easy to follow, simple, and most important of all, delicious. I espcially like the stuffed pepper recipe. It is also a book one can sit down to read for leisure. Plus there are lots of tips, not just recipes.

He Can Write AND Cook 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful culinary book. It's more than a cookbook, as it focuses on various vegetables, etc. of the season, then uses those featured ingredients in several great recipes. If you've ever eaten at Tra Vigne in the Napa Valley town of St. Helena, you can even picture in your mind Michael in the kitchen, and almost taste the restaurant's just-pressed olive oil. If you know anyone who likes to read culinary books (like my mom, who literally reads cookbooks cover to cover, then goes back to earmark certain recipes), you should give them this book for the holidays. It is a beautiful, coffee table-quality, glossy work.

Editorial Review:

This classic cookbook from Food Network star Michael Chiarello is at last available in paperback. It's vintage Chiarello: blending simple yet sophisticated recipes from Napa Valley's famed Tra Vigne restaurant with the grace of Wine Country living and the warmth of his Italian heritage. More than 80 rustic recipes are enhanced by personal stories, detailed descriptions of how to choose ingredients for seasonal perfection and deliciousness, and Chiarello's personal philosophy of life as it relates to cooking—and feeding—those you love.

A good solid comfort food cookbook 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I wish I could give 4 1/2 stars, but just couldn't work up to 5...but this will make a perfect gift for those who love old fashioned comfort food; or as a gift to yourself. Many recipes are a bit beyond diner fare, but still simple enough for beginning cooks.
There are more than 400 recipes, not the 180 stated in the write-up. The book contains hints on many pages, such as to clean a pot with marks fill with water and add cream of tarter and bring to a boil, something my grandmother taught me, but doesn't seem to be well known today. There is a reference section including `how long will it keep' and `effects of freezing'.
Chapters include breakfast, appetizers, soups, salads, pasta, side dishes, poultry, meat, seafood, pasta, potatoes, breads, desserts, canning and preserving, barbecues. Comments and blue ribbon ratings are given.
If you are looking for a good solid old fashioned cookbook, something that would have your grandma's recipe for snow pudding or pioneer stew, but also contains braised lamb with gremolata or grilled salmon with maple mustard glaze, then this is the one for you. Just also be aware that the format is smaller than the normal 8X10, but believe me my eyesight isn't what it used to be and the pages are so clean and uncluttered I didn't have trouble reading the print.

Editorial Review:

Conceived by cooks, The Old Farmers Almanac Everyday Cookbook contains more than four hundred trusted and tasty recipes, including classic dishes, ethnic fare, and family favourites. The entire collection reflects the warmth and wit of The Old Farmers Almanac with more than 180 recipes and money-saving tips, plus a chapter of handy and helpful charts and tables.

Share in the delight of sophisticated Washington wines, coffee fresh vegetables, fruits, and the exotic flavors of the Pacific Rim countries.

Tom Douglas' style is laid-back sophistication with a dash of humor. You can see it in the names of his chapters, "Starch Stacking," "Slow Dancing," and "Mo' Poke, Dadu" (this last title, courtesy of his daughter, Loretta, means "More Pork, Daddy"). And you can taste it in his signature dishes such as Dungeness Crabcakes with Green Cocktail Sauce, Roast Duck with Huckleberry Sauce and Parsnip-Apple Hash, Udon with Sea Scallops in Miso Broth, and Triple Cream Coconut Pie.

Try his hearty Long-Bone Short Ribs with Chinook Merlot Gravy and Rosemary WhiteBeans or spicy Fire-roasted Oysters with Ginger Threads and Wasabi Butter. Relax in the comfort of the comfort foods he prepares for his own family: Loretta's Buttermilk Pancakes with Wild Blackberries, Basic Barbecued Baby Back Ribs, and Five-Spice Angel Food Cake. They're all clear, simple recipes that'll have you cooking like Tom Douglas from the very first page.

But this is more than a cookbook; it's a food lover's guide to Seattle. Join Tom on a tour of his city with his list of top ten best things to do -- and eat -- in Seattle, from his favorite ethnic markets and neighborhoods to where to get the best breakfast.

French Bistro Cooking with an American Twist 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 25 people found this review helpful.

If you pick up this book, be prepared to deal with uncontrollable drooling as your browse through the pages. Beautiful pictures of Seared Kobe steaks, giant cheese popovers, peanut butter-chocolate parfait and many more are a feast for the eye. Laurent Tourondel is a master at what he does and the recipes reflect it well. He takes classic French Bistro cooking but adapts it for the American public, the guy is not afraid to cross the line of tradition to create his own version of classical dishes using all american ingredients. Needless to say, he is quite succesful at it if you judge by the speed he's opening restaurants around New York. This book will appeal to the home cook looking to fine tune his skills and to the "night table" gourmet who simply enjoys nice cookbooks, it'll make you drool and it'll make you want to cook. After all, that what cookbooks are for right?

Mother's home cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I acknowledge the Madman's points: most of the recipes in this book do not conform to today's dietary standards. But bear in mind that this book was first written over 70 years ago. That's when my mother got her copy. She still has it with the cover's half-torn off and pages stuck in loose and scribbled on. This was a Pennsylvania Dutch housewife's book of recipes for Pennsylvania Dutch housewives. They weren't worried about waistlines or BMI numbers. They needed to feed their families who worked in the fields or guests over for a holiday feast.

I also agree that the strength is the desert section, but that is the specialty of the PA Dutch. My brother, sister, and I would spend winter days with mother making cookies from the recipes and I even took a turn at making the cream puff recipe once for a church social. They turned out great!

Not only is this a wonderful recipe book, but to me, it is a family treasure.

Editorial Review:

Showalter has collected 1,100 recipes--tantalizing dishes brought to this country directly from old Dutch, German, Swiss, and Russian kitchens--from hundreds of Mennonite women noted for their excellent cooking. Each chapter is introduced by the author's own nostalgic recollection of cooking in her grandmother's day. Color photos and illustrations throughout.

You know what I like in a cookbook? RECIPES. 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This cookbook was something of a waste--glad I got it used. The used copy I got still had the Pottery Barn sticker on the back, which comes as no surprise--I don't think that the author of this book intended to have it actually serve as a guide to cooking with a grill pan. Rather, it's a glossy throwaway publication that would look great tucked in to a gift box along with a new grill pan.

This book is full of photos...and big chapter headers...and white space...but very few actual recipes. Also, there's nothing really "grill pan specific" about them; it's really more of a "barbeque substitute" sort of thing. Nor is it a guide to one-pot cooking with a grill pan, which is sort of what I was hoping for. I really don't see myself making much of what's listed in this cookbook; if I wanted to get a million other pots and pans dirty I wouldn't bother hauling out the grill pan.

Editorial Review:

A new essential in the kitchen, the grill pan is a wonderful tool cooks everywhere are falling in love with. It s great for low-fat cooking and is a must-have for rainy days and city dwellers who dream of grilling but don't have the outdoor space. Delicious, healthy meals happen in minutes with chef Jamee Ruth's easy techniques and recipes. With the Grill Pan Cookbook, home cooks will never be at a loss for an enticing recipe that maximizes the grill pan s amazing potential. Including scores of ideas for lean meats, shrimp, chicken, and succulent vegetables, this fun and inviting cookbook makes whipping up beautifully grilled dishes a snap.
