A toast to Joanne for creating her wonderful Mediterranean style recipes with wonderful wine pairings! My absolute favorite recipe is the Wine Country Flatbread with Grapes and Toasted Walnuts - so unique and a reflection of Joanne's style of using a few quality ingredients to create delicious, simple yet elegant recipes. Just cooked & baked Joanne's recipes for a dinner party and received rave reviews, especially for the Farmer's Market Risotto and the Pizza with Cherry Tomato and Basil Salad. Whether you wish to learn basic Mediterranean style recipes, or expand your culinary repertoire with some unique twists, Wine Country Cooking is sure to please your palette!

Editorial Review:

The famed compound at Hyannisport was the Kennedy family's favorite place to relax, and Rose Kennedy's kitchen was the central gathering place. Everyone--including Jackie Kennedy Onassis, JFK Jr., Caroline Kennedy, Maria Shriver, and Arnold Schwarzenegger--came wandering in the back door to visit Rose. Her chef, Neil Connolly, always made sure there was lobster salad, potato salad, and a platter of roast chicken in the fridge, and in this book, he brings these and other favorites to your home. Included in this cookbook are Kennedy family photos and anecdotes collected personally by Neil.

Here he shares an exclusive recipe from the Kennedy kitchen with us:

Sugar Tuile

These thin, crisp cookies can be cooled flat, but here they are formed into edible cups that can hold ice cream, chocolate mouse, or fresh berries. Note that the cookies are baked in two batches, so that you have time to mold them while they are still warm and soft.

Makes about 8 cookie cups

1 stick (4 ounces) butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
6 egg whites
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1. Preheat the oven at 375 degrees F. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper and draw four circles 5 inches in diameter on each piece of paper.
2. Invert four heatproof, 2-inch-wide glasses or cups on the counter so they are ready when the tuiles come out of the oven.
3. In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the sifted flour, egg whites, and vanilla. Beat until well blended.
4. Spoon the batter into the circles on one baking sheet and spread to the edges with an offset spatula. The batter will be very thin.
5. Bake the tuiles for 5 to 6 minutes, or until the edges become golden brown.
6. Remove from the oven and immediately use a wide spatula to invert each tuile over a glass. Using a mitt, gently press to form into a cup shape. As soon as the tuiles are set, gently lift them off the glasses.
7. Whisk the batter briefly and form the remaining 4 tuiles. Bake and form as directed above. When all the tuile cups are cool and set, store in a covered container until ready for use.

25th Anniversary Edition Falls Far Short of Expectations 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am a decades-long lover of Southern Living publications. Whether we buy the magazines, the cookbooks, or the home products, many of us count on Southern Living for unsurpassed quality and creativity.

I am extremely disappointed with "Christmas with Southern Living 2005". This edition marks the 25th Anniversary of this regularly phenomenal book. I can hardly believe this belongs in the same category as the volumes from previous years.

Certainly, the color photography remains true to form, wonderfully presented. But it's the sheer lack of creative craft ideas, and the fewer number of quality recipe ideas that mar this normally fantastic book. I was expecting a five-star product for the silver anniversary - what I fear I've received is far below what SL should have offered.

I expect CwSL 2006 to make up for what 2005's edition was lacking - this company will most certainly not let us down again. I'll continue to buy Southern Living books without hesitation - and with excitement! I'm simply disappointed that the 2005 book will find its way to the back of the bookcase.

Editorial Review:

Fab cookbook -- even if you are a novice! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I was given this cookbook for Christmas and was a little intimidated by it. It looks more like a coffee table cookbook at first glance -- something fun to look at and read but too challenging to actually use. However, I have fallen in love with this cookbook!! The Jack Daniel's Pecan Chocolate Cake with chocolate sauce is divine AND easy (and for those who don't eat wheat or gluten, totally flourless). The House-Made Ketchup is extremely good and makes a great bbq sauce (recipe also included). Even though the recipes are not hard, this is no canned-mushroom-soup cookbook. If you're the king (or queen) of fresh and don't mind spending a little time in the kitchen now and then, you might just love it. Kudos to Mustard's for sharing their best.

Editorial Review:

Chef-owner Cindy Pawlcyn put down her roots in Napa over 15 years ago, bringing her midwestern sensibility and flair for reinventing American food to the valley. With its ranch house feel, roadhouse welcome, mustard fields and vineyards as a backdrop, and dash of whimsy, Mustards Grill offers a one-of-a-kind dining experience. And with over 125 of the restaurant's signature dishes, Pawlcyn's "Mustards" delivers all the flavor that Napa is famous for.

Editorial Review:

For this trailblazing collection of America's favorite cookies, Nancy Baggett crisscrossed the nation, visiting small-town bakeries, chic urban cookie boutiques, rural inns, bed-and-breakfasts, farmers' markets, and the homes of locally renowned cooks. She combed through community cookbooks and searched out long-lost heirloom recipes, sure-handedly reworking every recipe in her own kitchen.
THE ALL-AMERICAN COOKIE BOOK celebrates regional gems from every corner of the country: Pennsylvania Dutch Soft Sugar Cookies, New York Black and Whites, New Mexican Biscochitos, Key Lime Frosties from Florida, and Mocha Espresso Wafers from Seattle. A sophisticated hazelnut chocolate sandwich cookie that was the closely guarded secret of an Oregon hostess is here, and so is a delightfully crisp (and easy to roll out) old-fashioned gingerbread cookie recreated from a handwritten 1880 notebook.
Homespun classics abound: Chocolate Whoopie Pies, Caramel Apple Crumb Bars, Chocolate Chunk Brownies, and Caramel-Frosted Brown Sugar Drops. The collection also features devastatingly delicious contemporary creations like Chewy Chocolate Chunk Monster Cookies and Cranberry-Cherry Icebox Ribbons. For children and adults alike, one of the most exciting chapters will be the lavishly illustrated "Cookie Decorating and Crafts," which includes everything from simple projects like Christmas cookies and Chocolate Gingerbread Bears to an elaborate gingerbread house. As Nancy Baggett tells the story of America's heritage, she slips in fascinating bits of history, showing the evolution of our homegrown baking traditions.

HEAVENLY COOKBOOK 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I GAVE THIS TO MY SISTER-IN-LAW FOR CHRISTMAS AND SHE LOVES IT. SHE IS JUST COOKING UP A STORM NOW - - THIS IS WHAT MY BROTHER TELLS ME. HE LOVES IT TOO!!!

Editorial Review:

Church Suppers celebrates gatherings of neighbors, family, and friends with delicious, down-home recipes from all over the United States and Canada. These are the dishes we remember and cherish, that bring us back to a simpler time: Fiesta Dip, Red Flannel Hash, Sloppy Joe Turnovers, Green Bean Casserole, Earthquake Cake, Blueberry Buckle...plus many regional and ethnic foods: Moussaka, Jambalaya, Chiles Relleños, Babka, Cannoli, and more. And because the recipes come from real people with bustling families, busy work schedules, imperfect kitchens, and realistic budgets, they are easy to prepare and focus as much on simplicity as they do on taste.

Full of local flavor and rounded out with line drawings and anecdotes about the contributing churches, Church Suppers is a delightful addition to any home kitchen.

another great, but slightly flawed, cookbook from ATK 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

America's Test Kitchen is similar to Consumer Reports, but for food. They will try a recipe 100 times, with every variation possible, experimenting with ingredients and techniques, until they can give you an informative article and a winning recipe.

I have tried about 14 recipes from this book and every one has been terrific. The carbonnade has a more complex flavor than carbonnade I ate in Belgium! We've also enjoyed the chicken parmesan, fish and chips, , chicken kiev, the pepper-crusted filet mignon (with a fantastic cherry-Port reduction), , stir fried chicken, hot and sour soup, potstickers and buttermilk coleslaw. And the strawberry cream cake is gorgeous and delicious. I am so confident in ATK's recipes that I've made a recipe for the first time when company was coming over, and it was wonderful.

Articles are supplemented with terrific sidebars that typically rate ingredient brands, compare kitchen tools or show a technique.

My only complaint about the whole series of ATK books is that they are organized idiosyncratically (sorry, but that is anathema to a librarian!) and have extremely poor indexes. For example, I knew the recipe for carbonnade was in the 2007 book. I looked in the index -- nothing under "carbonnade", nothing under "beef"! So I went to the table of contents. Nothing about carbonnade, but a chapter called "Best Beef Stew" -- could that be it? Luckily, yes, but that is no way to run a cookbook!

You cannot go wrong with these great books -- consistently reliable and delicious recipes.
