Editorial Review:

Grilling is the most basic method of cooking there is. It dates back to the time of cavemen -- food plus fire equals good. But when it comes to healthy food from the grill, evolution has been slow, producing lots of nutritionally sound but incredibly bland recipes.

Until now. Bobby Flay's Grilling for Life is, first and foremost, about getting the biggest, boldest flavor possible from food and fire while making healthy choices all the way. Imagine a lifetime of Espresso Rubbed BBQ Ribs with Mustard-Vinegar Basting Sauce; Bricked Rosemary Chicken with Lemon; Chinese Chicken Salad with Red Chile-Peanut Dressing; Grilled Beef Filet with Arugula and Parmesan; Grilled Salmon with Lemon, Dill, and Caper Vinaigrette; and Garlic-Red Chile-Thyme-Marinated Shrimp.

For food that is good for you and full of his signature big style and big flavor, Bobby Flay will teach you how to use herbs, spices, heart-healthy oils, citrus zests and juices, honey, and vinegars in place of sugary commercial sauces and marinades. He'll show you how to enhance flavor by toasting nuts, seeds, and spices on the grill; roasting garlic in a covered grill to add to vinaigrettes and marinades; and grilling slices of lemon, lime, and grapefruit to serve on the side.

Bobby believes that we all need a full and balanced diet to be happy and healthy, so the book has everything you need to keep grilling for life: veggies chock-full of fiber; delicious complex carbohydrates (the right carbs) that not only fight heart disease but break down slowly, leaving you feeling fuller longer; fish rich in omega-3 oils; and, of course, the full range of proteins.

To sharpen your skills by the fire, Bobby Flay's Grilling for Life includes the sections "Equipment" (a very short list); "Fahrenheit 101," a temperature chart that helps you navigate rare, medium, and well-done; "Meals in Minutes," offering suggestions for the time-challenged; and "Party Foods," great party menus for everything from a cocktail party to an Italian feast.

Editorial Review:

If you are among the 1 in 250 American adults intolerant to gluten or allergic to wheat, you know how frustrating it can be to crave -- but not be able to have -- a buttery scone or a slice of warm pie. And if you have kids who are gluten-sensitive, you know how much they miss being able to bite into a chewy chocolate chip cookie when they come home from school or share a friend's birthday cake.

Now you don't have to sit wistfully by while family and friends indulge in dessert or other confections. Inspired to create delectable treats for her own gluten-sensitive family, Cordon Bleu-trained chef Rebecca Reilly believes that eating should be a pleasure, no matter what your dietary issues are. In Gluten-Free Baking, she shares more than 125 recipes for sweet and savory baked goods, from crispy cookies and meltingly tender muffins to elegant tartlets and quiches and stunning layer cakes.

Baking without wheat can be notoriously tricky, but by using Reilly's detailed step-by-step recipes, anyone will be able to turn out moist Pumpkin Bread and tender Sour Cream Coffee Cake. S'mores made with gluten-free Graham Crackers, Crisp Ginger Molasses Cookies, Lemon Squares, and Pound Cake are kid- and family-pleasing favorites that will no longer be off-limits. And no one who tastes the glorious Chocolate Pecan Torte, Ginger Brie Quiche, or homey Blueberry Pudding Cake will ever think they're missing something by eating gluten-free.

In addition, you'll find specifics on everything you need to know about gluten-free baking but were afraid (or didn't know enough) to ask, including how to stock a gluten-free kitchen, tips, techniques, and sources for ingredients, plus a list of resources and information on celiac disease and gluten sensitivity.

Tempting color photographs show you that these are desserts with eye as well as mouth appeal. With Gluten-Free Baking you'll never again miss out on the opportunity to feast on sinfully rich desserts!

Authentic, expansive and informative 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

For the last 15 years, I had been looking to recreate several of the wonderful Mexican dishes I ate while living in Tucson, Arizona for 6 years. It was not until I found The Border Cookbook that I was able to accomplish this task! The authors have made it very easy to cook the wonderful flavors that I have been missing all of these years. The descriptions of the history of the dishes and the detailed explanations of how to cook each recipe make this cookbook one of my favorites!

Time-consuming recipes that are well worth the effort 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book about three years ago and believe it to be the best cookbook I've seen covering Mexican and Southwestern Cuisine. The only disappointment was with the recipes being so good you would've liked to have seen some pictures. That being the only flaw, I would highly recommend it to anyone that has a fondness for border cooking. Try the Chicken Enchiladas Verda and the Arizona Enchiladas. They are time-consuming recipes that are well worth the effort.

Editorial Review:

Over 300 recipes explore the common elements and regional differences of border cooking.

Makes your tongue juice up with anticipation 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This beautiful, soft-covered book is fit for the great-room coffee table, but lives with even greater panache in the kitchen. Saunders traces the specialties of craft beer and food within each section of American continent: from the chocolate beer dinners of Chef Bruce Paton at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco, California, to "A Day at the Beach" menus with Alaskan Amber-glazed grilled salmon in the Alaskan Northwest or the Belgian Beer Dinners at Monk's Café in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

She seems to single out every great name associated with craft beer and food: Tom Peters and Chef Adam Glickman, Curt Decker, Garrett Oliver, Carol Stoudt, American Bounty Chef Anita Olivarez Eisenhauer, Dave Alexander, Pastry Chef Crystal Duck, Pam and Bob Cooper, Cheesemaker Willi Lehner, Chuck Skypeck, Brewchef Tim Schafer, Larry Bell, Rob Tod, Natalie and Vinnie Cirluzo, Gina and Vince Marsaglia, Shaun O' Sullivan, Dan Gordon and Dean Biersch, Chef Jody Denton, Lisa Morrison, Charles and Rose Ann Finkel, Greg Higgins, Jim Koch, Tomme Arthur, Ben Johnson - and scores of others. As you become more deeply aware of the hold beer has taken within the cooking community throughout North America, your blood begins to surge with anticipation. What might your own abilities be in the culinary arena? What could you do with a little knowledge of craft beer and your own local food styles?

In Part II of "The Best of American Beer & Food," Saunders presents an array of recipes for the casual party or the more formal dining theme. Although beer is included as an ingredient in some recipes, others are beer-free, but are accompanied with a "Beer Pairing Suggestion" that easily stands out for your reference. Bacon-Wrapped Bluefish with Brown Ale Hot Sauce, Spicy Steamed Mussels, and Shallot and Stout-Glazed Steak with Cumin-Pepper Onions will activate your palate, while Harpoon Winter Warmer-Spiced Pumpkin and Cranberry Bread, Barley Wine Banana Split, or Paxton's Chocolate Stout Pudding finish on the sweet end.

The Best of American Beer & Food is loaded with full-page color photos that make your tongue juice-up with anticipation. As you focus on each recipe, your mind can easily formulate the workings of your own holiday beer dinner - making yours the most memorable highlight of the season. Lucy Saunders gives you the secret ingredients that merge food with craft beer in the best possible way.

Editorial Review:

In The Best of American Beer and Food Lucy Saunders covers both pairing food and beer and cooking with beer. She begins by exploring the art of pairing flavorful beers with specific foods, considering today's wide range of beer styles and the foods and flavors that they compliment from salad through dessert. She then turns to recipes that incorporate beer, using the diverse tastes available from today's ales and lagers as flavor components.

Fantastic Cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I use this book all the time. The author infuses authentic soul food recipes with tales of her and our rich cultural heritage. From sumptuous buttermilk biscuits to delicious sweet potatoe pie, the recipes are easy to follow. Every recipe I've made in this book has turned out delicious. This is also a great gift for newlyweds.

Editorial Review:

“Soul food is just what the name implies. It is soulfully cooked food . . . good for your ever-loving soul . . . the shur-‘nuf kinda down-home cookin’ that I grew up on,” writes Sheila Ferguson. Abundant in flavor and variety—ranging from classics such as barbecued spare ribs, fried chicken, cornbread, and collard greens to less well known but equally sumptuous recipes such as sweet potato biscuits, grits soufflé, and wild fox grape wine—soul food is a truly American cuisine, originated in the deep South by slaves and later shaped and expanded by the rich diversity of African-American culture.

amish friends cookbook 4 out of 5 stars.

Very nice cookbook. The recipes are simple and common foods that I would make. The quotes at the bottom are inspirational.

Not what I was expecting 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I was very surprised by how much the Amish people depend on canned condensed soup for their recipes. I was expecting a cookbook that would have recipes to make many things from "scratch," but that is not the case. Also, I love shoefly pie, but the only recipe for it makes four pies. I don't need to make four pies at once.

Editorial Review:

New, from Barbour's best-selling author of fiction, Wanda E. Brunstetter, is the must-have cookbook of the season. Her Amish Friends Cookbook collection is a treasure trove of recipes and interesting facts from the heart of Amish country. With recipes divided into sections including breads and rolls, desserts, main dishes, sides, jams and jellies-and more!-you'll find only the best of home cooking between the pages of this delightful book. As an added bonus, you'll find featured facts about Amish life preceding each section of mouth-watering recipes. Topped off by one amazing package and an even more amazing price, cooks of all ages will have a hard time passing this one up!

Okay, when I saw this Cookbook, I just had to have it. I have the Original Bell's Best cookbook. I was thrilled to see a compilation of all 4 cookbooks combined. I bought copies for some relatives of mine as well. The Bell's Best are well known here in the south (at least I think they are). I only wish there were more recipes added. It could easily been made a much bigger cookbook, esp. since the other Bell's Best cookbooks are hundreds of pages in length. I guess this will leave room for sequels so others can enjoy these recipes as much as I have!

Mississippi girls know how to cook!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I grew up in Mississippi and have since traveled and lived all over the world. Trust me, unless you are a total foodie (heck, even if you are- I am and I STILL like these recipes) you will adore this cookbook. If you are trying to master regional southern cookery this is a WONDERFUL place to start. Real recipes from real people- this is the everyday food of Mississippi. If you want some of the more refined food order this (because it's great) but also order Southern Sideboards from the Junior League of Jackson, Mississippi. Together they make a wonderful set as a gift!

Editorial Review:

Bell's Best cookbooks, with over 6,000 outstanding recipes, have been condensed into one cookbook, with 429 of the most exceptional recipes to be found anywhere! Included among the recipes are fascinating facts and illustrations that show the development of the telephone.
