Editorial Review:

A DAY-BY-DAY GUIDE TO CELEBRATING KWANZAA THAT HONORS AND AFFIRMS AFRICAN-AMERICAN CULTURE, FOOD, AND FAMILY

Structured around the seven days of Kwanzaa and the virtues each day represents, A Kwanzaa Keepsake contains everything you need to create your own unique holiday traditions: blessings, proverbs, ceremonies, family projects, inspirational biographies of heroes and heroines of the African-Atlantic world, and a feast for each night. Each meal reflects the principle of the day:

FIRST NIGHT -- Umoja (Unity)
Multinational dishes such as Seasoned Olives from Brazil and Moroccan Mechoui-Style Leg of Lamb with Cumin, Mint, and Chile remind us of the union of all peoples of African descent.

SECOND NIGHT -- Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
South African Sweet Potato Fritters and Senegalese Chicken Yassa are part of a menu that is composed of dishes from the Motherland.

THIRD NIGHT -- Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
Share Herbed Chicken Thighs, Spicy Three-Cheese Macaroni and Cheese, and Deep Dish Apple Cobbler at a potluck supper for family and friends.

FOURTH NICHT -- Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
Pecan-Coated Roast Loin of Pork with Baked Peaches accompanied by Baked Potatoes with Spiced Yogurt is the centerpiece of a formal meal to entertain business contacts.

FIFTH NIGHT -- Nia (Purpose)
Honor your ancestors' American presence with a Roast Chicken dinner, accented by Home-Style Collard Greens with Spicy Vinegar and sweetened with Holiday Gingerbread with Molasses Whipped Cream.

SIXTH NIGHT -- Kuumba (Creativity)
An African-American healing supper opens the gates of remembrance through food. Surround your own heritage recipe for stuffed turkey or a vegetarian main dish with Pickled Black-Eyed Peas, Spicy Cranberry Chutney, and Killer Pecan Pie.

SEVENTH NIGHT -- Imani (Faith)
Usher in the New Year with North African Carrot Salad, Red Snapper Fillets in Creole Court Bouillon, and classic Southern Succotash.

With space to record your own family history, memories, and recipes, A Kwanzaa Keepsake is a book to cherish, and to turn to again and again.

Vertamae Cooks in the Americas' Family Kitchen 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book has some great "Low Country" recipes including Shrimp Gumbo, Hush Puppies, a Wonderful Baked Cheddar Cheese Macaroni and Cheese. Also many southern vegetable dishes, as well as some celebrity recipes.

I lived in Atlanta Georgia for ten years. I enjoyed watching Vertamae's Cooking Show on PBS, trying several of the meals she showcased. I have been delighted with her book.

Anyone enjoying southern family style cooking will be delighted by adding these recipes for their dining table pleasures.

Delicious Recipies Everytime 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this cookbook. I have never had a bad result.

Vertamae put together recipies with Southern style that defy the typical notion of southern cooking. My family is from Missippi, Missouri and Tennesee so having recipies that capture the regional taste is important.

When my favorite Aunt from Tennesee and her family visit they now expect me to make the Corn & Shrimp Chowder (found on page 37), I don't mind because it is easy to make and turns out perfect every single time.

Everytime I make a dish for company from this book at least two guests ask for the recipie. It even impresses my mother-in-law who is a terrific cook from a family of women who are terrific cooks.

She also includes folklore, family stories and little extras that make this book special. Another book you might like if you like this one is Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine.

Try it you will love it.

P.S. Vertamae has a cameo in Beloved. And I also love the PBS Series that inspired this book

Editorial Review:

A companion volume to the PBS series on the art of African-American cuisine introduces 110 delectable recipes, accompanied by folklore and anecdotes that trace the history and contribution of African roots to American cookery. Original. TV tie-in. 30,000 first printing. Tour. IP.

An important reference book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Having been raised in the South, I've started researching how our foodways have been effected by the African culture. Surprisingly, the subject is not documented very well. However, Paige's book is an excellent place to start! He has included lots of footnotes and a lengthy bibliography.

I've only given it 4 stars because I found several typographical errors. Don't let that stop you from reading this book! I found it interesting and fun! It even includes recipes! Yum!

Harlem Really Cooks 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

From the HOT pink cover to the recipes that literally make your mouth water, this book is a joy! Many of the recipes are named after someone, and sound so deliciously REAL that you imagine yourself watching them cook and wishing you could sit down with them to sample the dish. Wonderful illustrations by Benny Andrews.....Let's Eat!

Harlem Really Cooks 4 out of 5 stars.

It's a great book. I like the fact that it's broked down into seasons and the receipes are easy to follow. The Cuban port receipe is wonderful! I love that it also has nice art work.

An Extraordinary Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

Harlem Really Cooks is more than a cookbook. It's a sharing of stories at a family reunion, a visit to an art gallery, it's experiencing Harlem, Africa or the Caribbean, without leaving home. I love this book and give it the highest recommendation.

Editorial Review:

Classic soul food recipes are honored, but with new spices, new flavors, and simpler techniques. Harlem Really Cooks combines art, history, photographs, personal anecdotes, and nostalgia. A portrait of the new Harlem, as seen through the eyes of a life-long resident and expert home cook.

Editorial Review:

The creation of the Aunt Jemima trademark from an 1889 vaudeville performance of a play called "The Emigrant" helped codify a pervasive connection between African American women and food. In Black Hunger, Doris Witt demonstrates how this connection has operated as a central structuring dynamic of twentieth-century U.S. psychic, cultural, sociopolitical, and economic life.
Taking as her focus the tumultuous era of the late 1960s and early 1970s, when soul food emerged as a pivotal emblem of white radical chic and black bourgeois authenticity, Witt explores how this interracial celebration of previously stigmatized foods such as chitterlings and watermelon was linked to the contemporaneous vilification of black women as slave mothers. By positioning African American women at the nexus of debates over domestic servants, black culinary history, and white female body politics, Black Hunger demonstrates why the ongoing narrative of white fascination with blackness demands increased attention to the internal dynamics of sexuality, gender, class, and religion in African American culture.
Witt draws on recent work in social history and cultural studies to argue for food as an interpretive paradigm which can challenge the privileging of music in scholarship on African American culture, destabilize constrictive disciplinary boundaries in the academy, and enhance our understanding of how individual and collective identities are established.
