Editorial Review:

One in a six-volume set of little cookbooks-each one a treasured collection of recipes from the best-selling cookbook, Favorite Recipes from Quilters. Each book in the series presents a particular category of food. The six books are: Breads, Soups, Salads, Main Dishes (Pasta, Vegetables, and Meats), Pies, and Desserts. Each book offers 24-36 recipes-all proven favorites from the original collection. Each volume also includes several stories from the lives and experiences of quilters. The charming design of these books makes them an irresistible impulse item. Their colorful dustjackets and readable spines make them equally eye-catching on a bookshelf or beside a cash register. Each volume contains warm and strikingly rich watercolors throughout its pages. Each painting was created exclusively for this series. These books have about them the special vibrancy that comes from cooking and quilting. All who own them will share in that!

Editorial Review:

The Festival Cookbook celebrates the rich variety of the seasons. The recipes it contains demonstrate the earth's bounty- In the Springtime, try Asparagus Ham Bake, Rhubarb Torte, and Hot Cross Buns! For Summertime, there are Sweet-Sour Tomatoes and Peaches 'n Cream Cheese Cake. During the Autumn, how about Pumpkin Shell Fruit Salad and Apple Dumplings in a Casserole? Through the Winter have some Honey Oatmeal Bread and Cranberry Christmas Pudding. The Festival Cookbook's recipes are never difficult but always above the ordinary. The ingredients are fresh, but never hard to find. The brightness in these dishes comes from nature itself! Make them, and the earth's fullness will transfer to your table. "Bring along a copy of The Festival Cookbook, a collection of recipes from contributors that brought them fond memories, foods that were a part of special family and community times." -The Washington Post

An Eye-Opening Look at Amish Cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I fell in love with this book's whimsical title, and thoroughlyenjoyed it's content. The book begins with a lengthy introduction tothe Amish, describing their customs, history, and beliefs. This is not your typical cook book, as it is full of photos of people and scenes, instead of food! I have tried several of the recipes, and love the hearty down-home cooking of this culture. It is real life cooking. I was intrigued with recipes such as "Lima Beans with Sour Cream" and "Spiced Cabbage", which aren't typical recipes for the region I live! I was also amused with the recipe titled "Shipwreck" (a combination of ground beef, "leftover rice", tomato sauce, and other ingredients), and one called "Oatmeal Pie #2". If you are looking for a gourmet cookbook with fancy recipes, this is not the book for you (although you may be surprised at some of the unique recipes that are listed). However, if you want a great resource for real life cooking, with ingredients that you have in your own pantry, along with some interesting information on the Amish people, you will enjoy (and USE) this book!

Editorial Review:

This cookbook has become a favorite with home cooks across Canada who want delicious, convenient and economical dishes that will enhance family meals. Originally published in 1978 by the Altona Women's Institute in Manitoba, it has now been in print for 25 years! Many of the 200 recipes in this collection were handed down from mother to daughter and shared in the close-knit Mennonite community, where food has always been a central feature of any gathering. This book has all the elements of great home cooking -- soups, salads, main dishes, desserts, cakes, cookies, jams and pickles. Some favorite Mennonite dishes include Cabbage Rolls, Zwieback, Christmas Almond Cookies, and Mustard Pickles. These tried-and-tested favourites are sure to please.

How Did She Know My Family's Secret Recipes? 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I picked up this cookbook hoping to discover some recipes to make for my mother that would remind her of the cooking that she grew up with. I was not disappointed! There were several old favorites and many recipes that I could swear were family secrets. The Dandelion Salad with Bacon Dressing and Potato Filling recipes were very similar to what we make for special occasions, and the Apple Fritters, Hot Potato Salad, Coconut Cake, and the Ham, Green Beans, and Potatoes dishes reminded us of several other recipes we had not made in a long time. Listed by food type in an easy-to-follow format, the only thing missing in this book was a beautiful picture of each of the recipes. If you enjoy cooking, are from Penn Dutch country, or just want to sample some regional cooking, this book is a great choice for you! Enjoy!
