Excellent New Orleans Influenced Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Crescent City Collection is the latest cookbook by the Junior League of New Orleans. It contains some recipes for dishes fundamentally identified with New Orleans, but it also reflects the trend in restaurants and kitchens throughout New Orleans to experiment with new tastes and combinations of flavors. The recipes for traditional dishes like red beans and rice all seem to have a twist that successfully compliments and expands upon what is tried and true. All the recipes I've tried and tasted have been excellent, notably the Crawfish Cheescake, the Curried Chicken Salad, the Madras Salad, and the Chicken Parmisan with Apricot Sauce.

In addition to the excellent recipes, Crescent City Collection is so gorgeous it is worthy of being displayed on a coffee table. The photographs are of historic New Orleans residences. In addition, throughout the cookbook are vignettes on subjects related to New Orleans and cooking. When I don't want to cook out of it, sometimes I just enjoy reading it.

Amazing! 5 out of 5 stars.

Seriously. This is one of best New Orleans cookbooks I have found. It's such a nice change from the typical "Creole" & "Cajun" hype. THIS IS REALLY HOW WE COOK AND WHAT WE EAT IN NEW ORLEANS! The Newport recipes, for me, are a great added bonus. Just amazing. I have this book in my own kitchen and have given it as a wedding present....its always very well received! Thank you to Chef Saxer for getting it right! FINALLY!

Delicious and gorgeous 5 out of 5 stars.

What a lovely book! The photography is stunning, the writing clear and entertaining, and the recipes are great! Chef Saxer has taken the voluptuous tastes of New Orleans and married them with the crisp, light flavors of New England, and the results are magical. Whether you're cooking a quiet dinner at home or entertaining in high style, this book will inspire and delight you. Bravo!

Editorial Review:

If you love to slip into the kitchen to watch the cook at work, you'll love the private kitchens of New Orleans chef Michael Saxer - who summons the joie de vivre of New Orleans and sparking social occasions of Newport, Rhode Island, in a collection that can be prepared at home.

Editorial Review:

Easy to Cook, Easy to Eat.

That is Justin Wilson's philosophy in Justin Wilson's Easy Cookin', a brand-new collection of more than 165 delecticious recipes that are a snap to make. You don't have to look any farther than your supermarket for the makings of a great meal, no matter what you've got a hankering for. For breakfast try Lost Bread (called that because you make it from bread that's gone stale), which is fried up golden like French toast, or a comforting bowl of Pecan grits. If you're having a party (and if you're not, why aren't you?), Justin's got plenty of recipes to keep hunger at bay till the main course arrives -- Pickled Eggs, Oyster Pate, and Shrimp Dip, just to name of few. Planning a picnic? Plenty to choose from here -- Hot Cabbage Slaw, Country Egg Salad, Picnic Potato Salad, Potato Salad Without Potatoes (you'll have to read the recipe to find out how Justin does it!). Then there are hearty soups and stews to warm you up on raw days -- Oyster Soup, Turtle Stew, Red Bean Soup, Leftover Steak, Potatoes, and Mushroom Stew.

Now let's get to the main event. Louisianians love their fish and shellfish, and Justin doesn't disappoint with Oyster-Eggplant Jambalaya, Crabmeat Etouffe, Crawfish Maque Chou, and Boiled Shrimp in the Shell and a 6-pack of Beer. More in the mood for turf than surf? Take your pick of Chicken casserole with Wild Rice, Barbecued Brisket, Hominy and Chili Casserole, Fresh Pork and Sausage Jambalaya a la Party, and Rabbit Gumbo.

Rice and beans are a Louisiana staple, and Justin's got more than a few -- Dilly Cheese Rice, Pepper-Mushroom Rice, and Red Beans and Rice Casserole. And don't forget your vegetables: Try Potato Pound Cakes, Green Onion Grits, Okra and Crawfish, and Pork Backbone and Turnips

And just when you're ready to push back from the table, there's dessert. Choose from seven different kinds of cobblers, Strawberry Pie, Walnut Pie, Bread Pudding, and Brown Rice Pudding.

Good living is about good eating with friends and family, and Justin Wilson's Easy Cookin' just made it a whole lot easier. I garontee!

Editorial Review:

Cajun food has become a popular "ethnic" food throughout America during the last decade. This fascinating book explores the significance of Cajun cookery on its home turf in south Louisiana, a region marked by startling juxtapositions of the new and the old, the nationally standard and the locally unique.

Neither a cookbook nor a restaurant guide, Cajun Foodways gives interpretation to the meaning of traditional Cajun food from the perspective of folklife studies and cultural anthropology. The author takes into account the modern regional popular culture in examining traditional foodways of the Cajuns.

Cajuns' attention to their own traditional foodways is more than merely nostalgia or a clever marketing ploy to lure tourists and sell local products. The symbolic power of Cajun food is deeply rooted in Cajuns' ethnic identity, especially their attachments to their natural environment and their love of being with people.

Foodways are an effective symbol for what it means to be a Cajun today. The reader interested in food and in cooking will find much appeal in this book, for it illustrates a new way to think about how and why people eat as they do.

fabulous recipes, the best new orleans 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 16 people found this review helpful.

When I lived in New Orleans I met the women that wrote this cookbook, and let me tell you - this is true "Nawlins" cooking. It has the best and easiest recipes for gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish etouffe and more. Yummy food, with great little stories and comments accompanying each recipe. You can't go wrong buying this - but don't expect any leftovers!!!)

Editorial Review:

Gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish, etouffee, beef brisket, Bananas Foster, Mississippi Mud Cake--these are Cajun and Creole delicacies that imbue the spirit of New Orleans. Now, creating mouthwatering Cajun and Creole dishes in your own kitchen is just pages away with the help of this popular cookbook. Traditional and contemporary recipes, tips, techniques, and ingredient information have been carefully sandwiched into one meaty volume by two New Orleans cooks--Lisette Verlander and Susan Murphy, owners of The Cookin' Cajun Cooking School. Over twenty thousand students a year learn the difference between Cajun and Creole cooking while getting a firsthand experience on how to make this delicious fare under the direction of the authors. You'll think you've just pulled up a chair in their kitchen.

Awsome N'Awlins Cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Being close to New Orleans, I have seen the author on local cooking shows. The Shrimp and Okra Gumbo in this book is one of the best ever..when I prepare it, as I do every year at Christmas, everyone wants the recipe. The other recipes are just as good..

a fake blowhard 1 out of 5 stars.

fried flounder? I don't think so, that is considered a capital crime in New Orleans, where no one says "Nawlins" outside of phony jackasses like Frank Davis. Avoid this book, this is strictly for tourists and idiots, and meant to sell his line of "Nawlins" seasonings, which no one uses but him.

Authentic N.O. flavor 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a born and bred New Orleanian. I recently borrowed this book from someone and I think it's a great cookbook, so I am here on Amazon to buy my own copy. The one star reviewer obviously just has it out for Frank Davis, looks like the same reviewer panned Frank's other cookbook. Frank is a flamboyant celebrity...like him or not, but at least try his recipes before panning his book!

Editorial Review:

"All the old and new ethnic, down-home...Fried recipes I couldn't squeeze into the last two cookbooks". dishes, grillades, rice dishes, gumbos, game dishes, etouffees, and simmered dishes -- there just isn't much left out this time. Davis has all new seafood recipes plus variations on the Cajun-Creole standard of cooking.

A note on safety 5 out of 5 stars.

Sure, cook in the nude. Just wear an apron if you are working with hot grease. Be well.

Cooking in the Nude is nothing more than a misleading title 1 out of 5 stars.

I ordered this book with high expectations which were quickly dispelled after opening the book. I guess the title is justified by a mild twist on words(ie. "Appeteaser") becuase I find no other reason for it. However, the fact that this piece of garbage(which I returned so minus one of those) has sold over 400, 000 copies has motivated me to wrie my own book. Thanks.
