Oh boy... 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

When I bought this book to read I thought it was going to be stories that Jesse has told before, rewritten in great detail with time and thought put into them, but if you've seen his videos (A Merry Heart Doeth Good Like a Medicine) these are just transcripts of those stories, word by word. It's sad because it's his storytelling that's so hilarious, and he'll scream and hoot and hollar and make noise... but in the book, things that made you fall on the floor laughing during the videos were dumbed down into long drawn out phrases like "Brrrrrrgggffff rafffffftaffff" and it's barely amusing. The only thing this book is really good for is if you want the cajun recipes, otherwise I suggest checking out his videos.

Great Stories but Questionable Recipes 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Some of the recipes didn't sound too good- but many of them are very good. My husband has had a ball trying to make many of them. The stories are funny, yet most of them bring home their point very well. I appreciated that this was not in your face Christian writing, but rather gentle reminders that we all need to take care of ourselves spiritually.

Editorial Review:

TABASCO®: An Illustrated History is the first and only book about the McIlhenny family and company based on previously untapped documents in the McIlhenny Company Archives. This chronicle examines the origin of TABASCO® sauce, from its post-Civil War creation on Avery Island, Louisiana, to its evolution into the "gold standard" of pepper sauces and a global culinary icon.

It also examines the often stranger-than-fiction stories that are inexorably bound up with the rise of TABASCO®--Edmund McIlhenny's creation of the sauce in the midst of Reconstruction-era economic ruin; John Avery McIlhenny's adventures in Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders volunteer cavalry regiment; Edward Avery McIlhenny's explorations in the unforgiving Arctic; and Walter S. McIlhenny's amazing heroics in World War II, which eventually secured him the rank of brigadier general, even as he modernized his family business and ensured its success into the late Twentieth century.

In addition to the central narrative, TABASCO®: An Illustrated History contains numerous detailed sidebars, as well as over a dozen historical recipes selected from handwritten McIlhenny family cookbooks and other archival sources. This book boasts hundreds of fascinating photographs, both in color and black-and-white, many of which are previously unpublished.

Shane K. Bernard is historian and curator for the McIlhenny Company and Avery Island, Inc., Archives. He is the author of Swamp Pop: Cajun and Creole Rhythm and Blues; The Cajuns: Americanization of a People; and Cajuns and Their Acadian Ancestors: A Young Reader's History (all from University Press of Mississippi).

Reproduces the second, 1901 edition in its entirety 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

The reprint of this classic cookbook shouldn't be missed: The Picayune's Creole Cook Book reproduces the second, 1901 edition in its entirety, returning to print a classic which preserved traditional creole cooking upon the brink of its extinction. Introductions explain history and recipes alike. No photos, but those interested in Creole history and culture won't miss them.

Editorial Review:

Assembled at the turn of the 20th century by a Crescent City newspaper, The Picayune, this volume is the bible of many a Louisiana cook and a delight to gourmets everywhere. Hundreds of recipes include fine soups and gumbos, seafoods, all manner of meats, rice dishes and jambalayas, and many other dishes.

A true "cajun" cookbook!! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is a treasure! I am from Southern Louisiana but now live in Colorado. I never really wanted to learn to cook when I was young, but now that I am older and a mom I want to pass on my heritage to my children. This book is very authentic. It is exactly like my mother cooks--with no weird ingredients. The recipes are fantastic and the commentary witty. It also has a glossary for those persons who don't understand some of the cajun terminology. This book was my "early" Mother's Day present. And, I couldn't be any happier.

Excellent and True 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been cooking cajun foods for over 40 years and my mother before me. This book is so true to the authentic "French" cajun cooking found in homes in and around Lafayette, Louisiana that I sometimes am surprised at its accuracy. I watch Miss Lucy on PBS and this book follows her show. I just purchased two more books as gifts for my children and will give it to them as the truest representation of the preparation and enjoyment of "French" cajun cooking. On her show, her accent is alittle too corney but look beyond that and enjoy!!

Editorial Review:

Justin Wilson, who radiates charm, warmth, and the earthy joie de vivre of storied Cajun country, is also a great chef and has assembled in this volume another great treasury of authentic Cajun recipes.

Host of a syndicated TV show cooking show, the world’s leading Cajun humorist, and a gourmet chef in his own right, Justin Wilson presents a wide range of Cajun dishes that perfectly complement his highly successful first cookbook, "The Justin Wilson Cookbook," which has gone through numerous printings.

For those who want to know the secrets of Cajun cooking, or for those who simply want mouthwatering recipes, Wilson’ "Cookin’ Cajun" fits the bill. Savor, for example, Wild Duck and Turnips, Cajunized Oriental Pork Chops, Stuffed Cucumbers, and Leftover Spaghetti Casserole. Also enjoy a variety of recipes under the "Cooking in a Bag" section, in which Wilson gives away the secret for cooking meats quicker—and making them more tender—than non-Cajuns ever dreamed of. These are but a smattering of the many certain to please recipes in this book, many of which were developed for Justin Wilson’s TV show.

Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a truly wonderful cookbook. It looks beautiful, is laid out well, and most importantly, has lots of terrific recipes. The recipes are not difficult, the ingredients are generally easy to find, and yet they all have that special flare that great southern cooks are known for. I'm buying a second copy to give to my sister-in-law. It is a great addition to your cookbooks and makes a great gift.

Wow! This book is beautiful! 5 out of 5 stars.

This new River Road Recipes is absolutely beautiful! The pictures are gorgeous and the text reads like a Louisiana traveloge. The recipes are new and current but still reflect the types of food people like to eat in Louisiana. Not the same old gumbo recipes but no weird ingredients you have to look up either. We are loving it.

A Great New Orleans Cookbook 4 out of 5 stars.
27 of 31 people found this review helpful.

The Brennan's New Orleans Cookbook is a great, classic New Orleans cookbook. (Note: I was born in NO, live in South Louisiana, and lived in NO for 5 years.) Try the recipes for Stuffed Bell Peppers, Stuffed Mirletons (use shrimp instead of crabmeat), Red Beans, Redfish Courtboullion, and Creole Jambalaya. One day I'm going to start on Page 1 and cook everything in this book!

Outdated in style! 1 out of 5 stars.

This may very well be an excellent cook-book, what do I know?? The style (NO PICTURES) and the typography is so old-fashioned that it bores me to tears! I get no inclination to open it at all!!

It is just does not appetite waking!
