A Wonderful Guide to Edible Plantlife! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

"The Flavors of Home" is a highly readable and well-illustrated account of the variety and richness of edible plants in the San Francisco Bay Area. Before reading it, I could never have imagined that an urban realm of some 6 million people would house such a rich supply of edibles (and a surprising abundance in our own backyards!)

Ms. Roos-Collins thoughtfully informs you of the types and usages of local plantlife, provides recipes, and warns you where danger lurks. The hand-drawn illustrations by Rose Craig are excellent.

I highly recommend this wonderful resource to anyone wanting to know more about the variety and seasonal availability of edible foliage in the Bay Area.

Urban survival... 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

A delightful guide, field book, cookbook, and botanical essay rolled into one, _The Flavors of Home_ is ideal for both experienced forages and casual hikers.

I saw this cookbook in a Santa Barbara shop but didn't want to pay the big bucks for it! Luckily, I checked EBay and there it was! And for about half the cost! I've tried many of the receipes inside and every one is great!! I highly recommend this cookbook!

Jim & Ingrid Croce & Costa Rica & Fetticine Alfredo 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Ingrid Croce has 3 restaurants in Old-Towne San Diego, California.

Last year, I was eating Ingrid's luscious Fetticine Alfredo (recipe included!) when I saw a book displayed called Costa Rica: The Last Country The Gods Made.

Apparently, singer Jim Croce's widow had spent a couple of years there working and recuperating after her husband's death, and the authors came into her restaurant one day and they ended up trading books with her (she details her stay in Costa Rica in Thyme In a Bottle).

Well, I looked through The Last Country The Gods Made and ended up buying it a couple of months ago on Amazon and the writing's particularly engaging for a nonfiction book- parts of it almost read like a novel (kinda like Ingrid's book!). The photographs really grab ahold of you too. It's one of the best travel books I've ever read.

Weird, huh? The Croce's, cooking and the Costa Rica connection!

Editorial Review:

Recipes from the popular Croce's restaurants along with delightful anecdotes from Ingrid Croce's life with the legendary Jim Croce, singer and songwriter of such hits as "Time in a Bottle" and "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown."

Fabulous Fish! 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This is a great cookbook. I've tried several of the dishes, and they have all been good. I just made the swordfish piccata, and it was really yummy! There's a good variety, and even people who aren't big fish fans can find something they will like. The directions are clear and simple to follow, and the receipes are all easy to prepare.

Easy, Creative and Quick 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The Everyday cookbook series have helped to make my dinners delicious but none more than Thursday is Pot-Luck. This book is jam packed with tons of creative one pot meal ideas in numerous ethnic backgrounds. The recipies are really wasy to follow and the ingredients needed are so common they can be made with little preparation (those frantic rushes to the supermarket when you don't have a specific ingredient) but the final product is anything but common!

Like a taste of home.. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I lived in Northern California wine country for nearly 20 years. We moved to Kentucky over 8 years ago and I sorely miss the California cuisine. I had seen a copy of this cook book when I lived in CA and thought it might be fun to have a copy now. After all, it is a classic cook book of the region. Reading through it took me back home again. I was pleased to even find some recipes from Ukiah, CA near where we lived. I am looking forward to trying the recipes for a taste of home again and I know my husband will enjoy them also since he is a fourth generation native of the region.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is somewhat dated which doesn't appeal to everyone unless they are looking for a trip down memory lane or a collector of cook books as I am. The service from Amazon was great as usual.

Editorial Review:

This is the original winemakers cookbook by 200 dedicated California winemakers, their wives and colleagues. This is the classic that is often imitated, but these are the 500 authentic recipes, based on the simples truth that good food is even better with wine. A Cookbook Classic

Editorial Review:

In The Best of California, writers Larry and Ann Walker serve up the Golden State on a silver platter, one whose cuisine is laden with its fresh produce, interpreted by the diverse tastes of its international population, and spiced by the energy and inventiveness of what has come to be known as the California spirit.

Perhaps no other place in the world has so successfully blended the best of so many culinary traditions, from French to Japanese, Italian to Mexican. Here are Asian-inspired salads and California-style sushi; tempting Mexicanin-influenced soups and salsas; Portuguese and Italian seafood stews and pastas; imaginative pizzas; and, of course, barbecues, grills, and the freshest possible vegetable and salad dishes.

With something for every palate, these recipes, together with beautiful color photographs, will serve as your personal culinary guide to California. And since they all call for the unwritten main ingredient of creativity, be sure to bring along a healthy dose of imagination to do a little California dreaming of your own.

Great Contemporary German Food! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

From pretzels to spaetzel to struedel, this book has German dishes with a zing. The whole cookbook is display of this mostly unknown Californian chef. Personally saw him on Food Tv. He has a flair for unique food, presented in remarkable ways (good photos of his technique). This one will serve anyone looking for a wonderful cookbook which hasn't gotten lot of the attention it deserves.

Editorial Review:

Chefs' cookbooks are full of dishes that require hours of preparation. The steps are often simple, but each one must be performed precisely to ensure an ultimately successful outcome. Hans Röckenwagner's Pan-Roasted Chicken Breasts on Curried Eggplant with Polenta Fries and Lemon Chutney is a perfect example. It also exemplifies how he constructs complex dishes from what he calls "building blocks." Röckenwagner, the cookbook, features recipes from the similarly named, favorably rated California restaurant. The menus also include tempting, simpler choices such as apple pancake and a killer bread pudding; other offerings, such as goulash soup, pretzels, and spaetzle, reflect Röckenwagner's German roots. Among the showpieces, Medallions of Salmon with a Smoked Salmon and Horseradish Topping is a recipe that cooks who enjoy an afternoon in the kitchen might reasonably attempt. Beyond that, this cookbook is primarily for attracting customers to the restaurant.
