Editorial Review:

James McNair, one of America's most prolific cookbook authors, is also the food spokesperson for Sutter Home Winery of St. Helena in California's Napa Valley. With The Sutter Home Napa Valley Cookbook, he joins those two activities, bringing to a wider audience the delightful marriage of good food and good wine that has become so much a part of wine-country life in California. The Trinchero family has owned and operated Sutter Home Winery since the late 1940s (it dates back to 1874), imbuing it with a Piedmontese sensibility that explains the presence of such northern Italian classics as bagna cauda and tapenade. The book is divided into chapters for starters, pasta and risotto, main dishes and accompaniments, and sweets. You'll find Grape Harvest Flat Bread as well as Summer Sangria, Frisee Salad with Grilled Pears, Cheese, and Walnuts, Penne with Roasted Eggplant and Peppers, Portobello Burger, Grilled Asparagus with Sesame Mayonnaise, Roasted New Potato Salad, and, for dessert, Fresh Fig and Peach Galettes. This combination of old European freely mixed with the flavors of new California makes for a winning cookbook from the heart of Napa.

Editorial Review:

Anyone who has seen Curtis Aikens in action will attest to his infectious enthusiasm and warmth. These same traits are captured in Curtis Cooks with Heart & Soul, a new book that will appeal to the millions of health-conscious cooks looking for more meatless dishes -- and lots of enticing flavors.

Many of the dishes have a down-home flair, but his imaginative use of greens and pasta reflects a passion for the fresh flavors of California-style cooking. In wonderfully fragrant and soul-satisfying dishes, such as Creamy Artichoke Pasta, Asparagus with Sun-dried Tomatoes over Pasta, and Peppers and Pasta, Curtis combines America's favorite comfort food with appealing vegetables and fresh herbs. Other hearty dishes include Pumpkin Soup, Wild Mushroom Chowder, Eggplant Enchiladas, and Apple-Squash Casserole. Lighter, vegetable-based fare includes easy-to-prepare stir-fries, curries, and rolls.

Curtis's knowledge and passion for produce are reflected in surprising, palate-pleasing improvisations, such as Lime Soup, Pizza Primavera, Vegetable Paella, and Swiss Chard Quiche. Healthier twists on Southern favorites, such as Red Beans and Rice and Black-eyed Peas, explode with flavor while skimping on fat. For other good, old-time flavors, Curtis includes staples from his childhood in Georgia: Hush Puppies, Biscuits, Stewed Okra and Tomatoes, Mama's Potato Salad, and Mama's Cabbage. And there's even more to Curtis's brand of eclectic, meatless fare-salads, chilis, stews, dressings, gravies, salsas, sauces, dips, and side dishes! Plus dessert. Curtis's repertoire ranges from traditional Southern specialties, such as Mud Pie and Benne Wafers, to family favorites, such as Sweet Potato Pie and Pecan Pie, to the downright, blatantly wicked: Hot Fudge Pudding.

No matter what Curtis cooks -- whether it is sweet, savory, traditional, or innovative, there are two special ingredients he never leaves out: heart and soul.

A Wonderful Guide to Edible Plantlife! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

"The Flavors of Home" is a highly readable and well-illustrated account of the variety and richness of edible plants in the San Francisco Bay Area. Before reading it, I could never have imagined that an urban realm of some 6 million people would house such a rich supply of edibles (and a surprising abundance in our own backyards!)

Ms. Roos-Collins thoughtfully informs you of the types and usages of local plantlife, provides recipes, and warns you where danger lurks. The hand-drawn illustrations by Rose Craig are excellent.

I highly recommend this wonderful resource to anyone wanting to know more about the variety and seasonal availability of edible foliage in the Bay Area.

Urban survival... 5 out of 5 stars.

A delightful guide, field book, cookbook, and botanical essay rolled into one, _The Flavors of Home_ is ideal for both experienced forages and casual hikers.

The Cooking Club Review of This Book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Sardine Factory of Monterey, California began in the condemned cafeteria of an abandoned fish processing plant in an obscure neighborhood that had fallen on bad times. Although immortalized by John Steinbeck in his novel "Cannery Row", Moneterey's fishing business had, more or less, ended by 1968 when restaurateurs Bert Cutino and Ted Balestreri opened The Sardine Factory. Since then the restaurant has become one of the must-try restaurants. Service is key here, and the owners were quick to tell author Willian Keenan Jr. that if you felt at home in The Sardine Factory they had failed to achieve the level of luxury and service to which they aspire.

You can catch glimpses of the restaurant in the old Clint Eastwood movie, "Play Misty for Me" and may spy movie stars, statesmen and even former Presidents among its patrons. The golf at nearby Pebble Beach is superb and the views of this coastline anywhere along Highway 1 are breathtaking. This is certainly Ameircan fine dining at its finest. Congratulations to the businessmen and chefs who made this restaurant become a standard by which other fine restaurants are judged.

There are a few recipes from The Sardine Factory in the book, but like the others in the series, this book is about the restaurant, and not how to copy its dishes.

Editorial Review:

History and fine dining meet at The Sardine Factory, a restaurant created by two busboys with a dream of creating an upscale restaurant in the run-down Cannery Row section of Monterey, California.

Only in California 5 out of 5 stars.

We had a baby shower today and made 2 appetizers and 3 salads from this book. All the guests wanted the recipes and when I showed them the book we got them from all were interested in getting their own copy. Although we have hundreds of cookbooks this is the one we chose to use for the shower. We tried all new recipes and were not dissappointed.

So, you like eating much? 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful book, with recipes that feature unusual combinations of familiar ingredients. It (of course) includes recommendations of which California wines to serve with the dishes. If you enjoy ethnic cuisine, there is much to find here to like: Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Thai, etc. Don't be a loser--buy this book. Chicks dig guys who can cook.

NOT only in California 5 out of 5 stars.
