Michele Anna Jordan is a gem. She leads us through a collection of recipes gleaned from the cream of the San Francisco restaurant world, giving histories and interesting vignettes of the owners and chefs of each. This is, however, not why I think she is a gem. In addition to the wonderful recipes, she writes about the history and committment of the fishermen who struggle to provide us with pristine fish and seafood. A section entitled "About the Recipes" is brilliant. She sincerely encourages home cooks to leave their intimidation behind. She speaks of enjoying not only the sensual experience of cooking
but the learning process as well. "Unless you have a skilled staff at your disposal, some of the recipes in this book likely
will seem overwhelming. If they do, it's not because you lack skills but because these recipes have been developed by executive chefs who rely on several people to execute a complex dish." Ms. Jordan is like a kind and loving kitchen muse, standing over our shoulders, encouraging us to try what sounds good and to also enjoy the process.

Wonderful exotic recipes - with all that implies 4 out of 5 stars.

I fell in love with Northern California and its regional cuisine (including the romantic world class Highland Inn of Carmel, which has two recipes in this book) and could not wait to try cooking it on my own when I bought this book. Indeed, it delivers what it promises - recipes from the best places - but it is by no means simple. As would be expected, recipes of restaurant caliber like these call for special and expensive ingredients that you would not readily have on hand or may not be easily available. For example, the lemon french toast mentioned in another review calls for country style bread and lemon curd. This is not a book for a busy mom looking for fast and easy weekday meal. It is, however, perfect for preparing a romantic dinner on a weekend.

Look no further than this cookbook. It's not the biggest, but it may be the most beautifully photographed cookbook I've ever seen. Our first dinner out of this book featured the Grilled Leg of Lamb with Zinfandel Marinade with Mint Pesto and the Grape Harvest Flatbread. I'm no baker, but the bread turned out perfectly on the first try, warm and full of sweet grapes. The lamb was also wonderful, perfectly complemented by the slightly sweet, sesame-oil flavored mint pesto. Wine pairings and Napa Valley history are also featured, but the real stars of this cookbook are the easy to follow recipes. Anyone with average kitchen skills will be rewarded with visually appealing and delicious gourmet-quality dishes the first time out.
