One of my favorites 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I use recipes from this book over and over again. This ranks right up there with "The Joy of Cooking" in terms of practicality and ease and taste. I've never had one recipe fail, they are all delicious and easy to make. If I go on an out of town trip, I make something from this book to take along for breakfast, for example the oatmeal raisin scones are delicious and easy to take along in a tupperware container tucked in a suitcase. Or if I go camping with friends I'll make some muffins. One time when some friends had a moving party and we met early in the morning, I made "Eggs for a Crowd" and it was a big hit! Great idea for a cookbook, as who knows more about breakfast foods than B&B's?! Plus, they need to have recipes that are original yet easy to make. I highly recommend this book!

Editorial Review:

With the Breakfast in Bed California Cookbook, you won't have to visit a B&B or be a gourmet cook to make an elegant breakfast. Carol Frieberg has compiled 120 signature recipes from select California bed-and-breakfast inns. Easy to prepare and striking when served, these creative dishes will transform your morning meal into an event worth savoring.

Delicious recipes from California Inns and B&Bs 5 out of 5 stars.

I just received this cookbook as a gift and I love it! We made the artichoke frittata and potato cake with bacon and blue cheese for a brunch and our friends were raving. We made the butterscotch banana bread the other night and it was to die for. Highly recommended!

Everyone should get this cookbook! :) 5 out of 5 stars.

Love, love, love this cookbook! We're big fans of B&B's and these recipes are some of the best I've ever made. Try the Cranberry Pecan Eggnog Muffins...so moist! The Espresso Coffee Cake aka Kaelene's Kona Coffee Cake is so easy to make and tastes like it's gourmet. The Spicy Apple Gingerbread Pancakes are great on a chilly morning! And that's just breakfast so far! Can't wait to try out the rest of the recipes...and looking forward to it! :)

Great for a crowd. 4 out of 5 stars.

Not what I expected! 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Please don't get me wrong; the book itself is filled with lots of wonderful recipes but it was not as big as I had expected. I guess I just expected a larger book, but regardless it is worth ordering because every recipe I have made from it has turned out superb!!! Highly reccommend it!

Something for Everyone's Taste 5 out of 5 stars.

I confess I am a serious collector of cookbooks. My first real adventure in Mexican food was in El Paso so I might have had high standards. This book is fantastic. Lots of information for the novice or experienced cook, good resource material and explainations make it thorough. A great and creative cook make it a fantastic addition to your library. The pineapple salsa and the mini chimichangas that can be baked are our family favorites. If you are going to get just one southwestern cookbook, buy this one.

Editorial Review:

These recipes, which focus on light and healthy eating as well as quick and easy preparation, are a fusion of Mexican ingredients and California fun. The food will satisfy all your entertaining needs.

THE BEST VEGGIE COOKBOOK AROUND 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I recently stayed at the Expanding Light Yoga Retreat and was awe-struck at the wonderful, flavorful foods created by Blanche. Eating was truly a spiritual experience that left everyone with satisfied bellies, calm minds, and smiling faces. As a vegetarian who loves to cook, there was no question that I would leave this place without this book. I have been nothing but delighted to read and create beautiful meals that are easy to make, maximizing the yield of flavors from just a few ingredients which I almost always have in my kitchen already, and well explained. The interview with the author at the beginning of the book, having spent time with her at the retreat, truly exemplifies the spirit in which she approaches her meal-planning and cooking-creating healthy food with a loving heart warms the spirits of all who share in eating it. The meal plan suggestions are truly thoughtful and outlined according to the season of the year. I cannot say enough good things about this book, and I have given it as a gift to a vegan already (almost all the recipes are vegan!). I highly recommend it to anyone.

Editorial Review:

This is the first cookbook from an established yoga retreat that offers vegetarian favorites that guests have raved about. Only the tried and true made it into this book. In 30 years, thousands have visited this retreat for health and renewal. Learn to make tasty, low fat, easy-to-digest meals that are naturally satisfying, leaving you feeling light and energetic. Uncomplicated recipes, natural ingredients, delicious! Since 1968, "The Expanding Light" yoga and meditation retreat in Northern California has been known for it's great-tasting, healthful, vegetarian cuisine.

By far this is my favorite cookbook to own and give as a gift for bridal showers, birthdays, or the holidays. I love that it includes recipes for cocktails. :-) I've given this as a gift to women AND men and have been warmly thanked by all. It even earned the approval of my boyfriend's sister, who has a Master's degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins. She is a tough critic when it comes to food and was impressed by the variety in California Sol Food and the light, healthy dishes. Buy your own copy (or 2) today!

This is a fabulous cookbook. Everything I have made has been highly complimented by all who taste. I love the drink recipes, the Ultimate Sangria is to die for! The great introductions to each meal are a great read as well. The best part about the purchase is you know that your money is not only going to help you make good food, but to help Junior League of San Diego. This cook book is a worthy purchase!

It's a great book. It's just not that much of a COOKbook 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

The description makes it sound as though this book is chock full of recipes from this very-old, very-beloved restaurant. But note carefully that it says 30 recipes. These are good recipes, without doubt. While I haven't tried them yet, they seem to be excellent instructions for the most old-standard of established San Francisco cooking, from sand dabs to cioppino. But 30 recipes isn't a lot, and you won't find anything very surprising. Get the best quality stuff and cook it simply -- that seems to be the Tadich Grill's key to success.

More than making me want to cook, however, this book makes me want to hop on a plane to the coast and rush over to the restaurant. It's more a history of the Tadich Grill, in the context of the history of San Francisco -- a foodie's guide to the City. And in that regard it succeeds very well. If you're curious how San Francisco restaurants came to be dominated by Croats, or you're interested in the culture that creates such a long standing institution, you'll enjoy this book. I'm not sure whether it's worth a full-scale investment to put it on your shelf (I took the book out of the library), but it's certainly an enjoyable read.

Now, let's see if there are any airline specials for San Francisco right now... I'm hungry!

Editorial Review:

A destination restaurant and a local treasure, the Tadich Grill continues to evoke an old-world feel. Briscoe's informative book captures the history, ambiance, and flavors of this San Francisco institution, presenting a warm portrait of a true culinary success story. Photos.

Editorial Review:

When award-winning chef Reed Hearon decided to open his third restaurant in the historic North Beach section of San Francisco, he wanted to pay tribute to the cuisine of the Italian immigrants who settled there. He was immediately intrigued by a hardworking, hard-drinking barkeep named Rose Pistola who had been featured in journalist Peggy Knickerbocker's recently published article on the great cooks, or "Old Stoves," of North Beach. He asked Rose if he could name his new restaurant after her, to which she replied, "What's in it for me?" Reed's answer? A table anytime.

Now tables are hard to come by at Reed's wildly successful Rose Pistola restaurant. Hailed as "the best Italian restaurant in San Francisco" by the San Francisco Chronicle, Rose Pistola took the country by storm, winning the 1997 James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant, while Bon Appetit named it "One of the Year's Best New Restaurants."

The Rose Pistola Cookbook features 140 of this beloved restaurant's best dishes, which combine Old-World Italian spirit and innovative California cuisine. Each recipe has been simplified for the home cook, emphasizing readily available ingredients and straightforward step-by-step instructions. Only the freshest seasonal fruits, vegetables, and seafood are used in ingredient-driven dishes that simply burst with flavor: Shaved Artichokes with Fava Beans and Parmesan. Roasted Beets with Ricotta Salata and Arugula. Wood-Oven Baked Goat Cheese and Roasted Pepper Pizza. Skillet-Roasted Mussels. Crisp Salmon with Fennel and Tapenade. Lamb Shanks with Peas and Potatoes. Rustic Nectarine and Berry Tart.

Striking black-and-white photographs of North Beach's farmers, fishermen, and other local residents accompany personal interviews, historical trivia, and colorful anecdotes about this exciting region. With gorgeous full-color food photographs and detailed information on techniques and ingredients, The Rose Pistola Cookbook brings the evocative flavors of North Beach into your kitchen.

This book hit home for me. 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Perhaps the best thing is that I am from Sonoma County where most of the events take place. The descriptions of the towns, people and the ever present vineyards really struck home. The obvious joy that the author takes in her life and the wines her family makes permeates the book. She obviously lives a life different from the average person but seems to know it and appreciate all she has. Many local people are mentioned but almost always in a positive and entertaining way. The explanation of grape growing and wine crafting made me feel that even a non-wine drinker like myself could learn to appreciate the difference between good and bad wines.

Ditto Los Angeles 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Couldn't agree with Los Angeles more. I rarely give up on a book, but Joy Sterling is so annoyingly self-absorbed (she writes that on her wedding day no one could go out for a decent meal because most of America's great chefs were at her party) that I became too disgusted to continue. Too bad, because the story of growing and bottling wine is an interesting one, and she doesn't tell it poorly. Anyone who finds space in a book about wine to describe her own birthday as being "on the order of an intergalactic holiday," however, is drastically overestimating her audience's interest in the pretentious details of her life.

Editorial Review:

A seasonal journal of one year in California's Iron Horse Vineyards describes the growing of grapes and the making and selling of wine, evoking the hardships and satisfactions of the vintner's life. 25,000 first printing. Tour.

Editorial Review:

Anyone who has seen Curtis Aikens in action will attest to his infectious enthusiasm and warmth. These same traits are captured in Curtis Cooks with Heart & Soul, a new book that will appeal to the millions of health-conscious cooks looking for more meatless dishes -- and lots of enticing flavors.

Many of the dishes have a down-home flair, but his imaginative use of greens and pasta reflects a passion for the fresh flavors of California-style cooking. In wonderfully fragrant and soul-satisfying dishes, such as Creamy Artichoke Pasta, Asparagus with Sun-dried Tomatoes over Pasta, and Peppers and Pasta, Curtis combines America's favorite comfort food with appealing vegetables and fresh herbs. Other hearty dishes include Pumpkin Soup, Wild Mushroom Chowder, Eggplant Enchiladas, and Apple-Squash Casserole. Lighter, vegetable-based fare includes easy-to-prepare stir-fries, curries, and rolls.

Curtis's knowledge and passion for produce are reflected in surprising, palate-pleasing improvisations, such as Lime Soup, Pizza Primavera, Vegetable Paella, and Swiss Chard Quiche. Healthier twists on Southern favorites, such as Red Beans and Rice and Black-eyed Peas, explode with flavor while skimping on fat. For other good, old-time flavors, Curtis includes staples from his childhood in Georgia: Hush Puppies, Biscuits, Stewed Okra and Tomatoes, Mama's Potato Salad, and Mama's Cabbage. And there's even more to Curtis's brand of eclectic, meatless fare-salads, chilis, stews, dressings, gravies, salsas, sauces, dips, and side dishes! Plus dessert. Curtis's repertoire ranges from traditional Southern specialties, such as Mud Pie and Benne Wafers, to family favorites, such as Sweet Potato Pie and Pecan Pie, to the downright, blatantly wicked: Hot Fudge Pudding.

No matter what Curtis cooks -- whether it is sweet, savory, traditional, or innovative, there are two special ingredients he never leaves out: heart and soul.
