Editorial Review:

Northern California lies on the same latitude as Spain, Greece, Turkey, and southern Italy. This, Joanne Weir explains, accounts for its similarities to these Mediterranean lands. Tied to a U.S. public television show, Weir Cooking invites you to enjoy the fruits of California's wine country. Focusing on olives, goat cheese, crunchy crostini made from artisan baked bread made in wood-fired ovens, wine, and other ingredients commonly associated with both areas, she provides recipes marrying the culinary bounty they share. In this collection of 140 recipes, Weir manages to draw cooks and more passive recipe readers into the California experience, describing how the development of small-family farming in northern California contributes to the soul-lifting experience of shopping at San Francisco's Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, where urban customers become part of a friendly and revolutionary agricultural community, farmers remember what they like, and conversation leavens the interchange.

Weir's classic white bean soup warmed with rosemary and pizza topped with pungent arugula and shaved Parmesan cheese are the epitome of California cooking. She is brilliant, too, at giving familiar dishes a new twist, poaching balls of buffalo mozzarella in warm, fresh tomato sauce perfumed with basil and frying risotto flavored with olive paste into irresistible, bite-size croquettes she calls Rice Olives. Any cook can appreciate the intelligent simplicity of lamb grilled on skewers of fresh rosemary and will gladly undertake the modest effort required to serve salmon drizzled with blood orange vinaigrette accompanied by plump asparagus. Apart from the TV show, Weir's way with food and her passion for northern California lets this book stand alone as a source for convivial meals. --Dana Jacobi

Like a taste of home.. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I lived in Northern California wine country for nearly 20 years. We moved to Kentucky over 8 years ago and I sorely miss the California cuisine. I had seen a copy of this cook book when I lived in CA and thought it might be fun to have a copy now. After all, it is a classic cook book of the region. Reading through it took me back home again. I was pleased to even find some recipes from Ukiah, CA near where we lived. I am looking forward to trying the recipes for a taste of home again and I know my husband will enjoy them also since he is a fourth generation native of the region.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is somewhat dated which doesn't appeal to everyone unless they are looking for a trip down memory lane or a collector of cook books as I am. The service from Amazon was great as usual.

Editorial Review:

This is the original winemakers cookbook by 200 dedicated California winemakers, their wives and colleagues. This is the classic that is often imitated, but these are the 500 authentic recipes, based on the simples truth that good food is even better with wine. A Cookbook Classic

I saw this cookbook in a Santa Barbara shop but didn't want to pay the big bucks for it! Luckily, I checked EBay and there it was! And for about half the cost! I've tried many of the receipes inside and every one is great!! I highly recommend this cookbook!

There are color photos by nationally recognized photographers David Muench, Marc Muench and Kirk Irwin. Food photography by Michael Brown. A Wonderful Guide to Edible Plantlife! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

"The Flavors of Home" is a highly readable and well-illustrated account of the variety and richness of edible plants in the San Francisco Bay Area. Before reading it, I could never have imagined that an urban realm of some 6 million people would house such a rich supply of edibles (and a surprising abundance in our own backyards!)

Ms. Roos-Collins thoughtfully informs you of the types and usages of local plantlife, provides recipes, and warns you where danger lurks. The hand-drawn illustrations by Rose Craig are excellent.

I highly recommend this wonderful resource to anyone wanting to know more about the variety and seasonal availability of edible foliage in the Bay Area.

Urban survival... 5 out of 5 stars.

Clearly written & makes plants easy to identify. This reference makes hiking in the area a joyous experience

Editorial Review:

A delightful guide, field book, cookbook, and botanical essay rolled into one, _The Flavors of Home_ is ideal for both experienced forages and casual hikers.

Chicken every way you'll like 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A very useful cookbook with lots of interesting recipes. And it lives up to the series title of "Everyday Cookbooks." Most of the recipes are uncomplicated & many use ingredients you probably have on hand. My only problem with it is that it doesn't index the recipes by chicken part -- that is, you can't quickly look up recipes for boneless chicken breasts or for whole chickens, for example, but have to browse through the book to find them. But I still find myself using this cookbook alot!

Fantastic book - great series 5 out of 5 stars.

I picked up Tuesday is Chicken a few years ago, and I've been using it all the time since. In fact, I loved it so much that I went out and bought the rest of the series!

Dozens of great recipes, straight forward instructions, and almost no exotic ingredients. Favorite recipe? Pepper-Pecan chicken, by far.

My favorite cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this cookbook because I stumbled on the recipe for Seafood Ravioli with Calamari Butter Sauce. I use the book all the time. Try the Shrimp and Asparagus Pasta, or the meatloaf. Or the Chicken Chili. Or Jackie's flourless chocolate cake. Everything I have made from this book has been better than anything like it I have ever seen. And, the quantities are just right for entertaining.

Wonderful! Warmly written with tried-and-true recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Despite being neither gay nor Jewish, I loved this cookbook. It is very warmly written, with the contributors's personal memories of where they got the recipes (usually from parents or grandparents), when they've prepared them, et cetera. All are tried-and-true, and those I've tried have been excellent.

One of the all-time best! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Although neither Jewish nor gay, this is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks. It is very warmly and tastefully done; the only references to gay are the title, and references to "my partner" liking some dish. It is comprised of treasured family recipes and/or those perfected over the years, and each is preceded by a brief description of why it is so special. Everything I've tried from this book has been wonderful -- and I always enjoy reading it. A great favorite, and highly recommended.

We bought this book as a thank-you gift for some friends who took us through Sonoma Valley and showed us the sights. It was a perfect way to remember fondly the time we spend together there--the photos are beautiful and the recipes (though I haven't tried them!) look great.

Editorial Review:

Northern California's Sonoma County has a unique and rich heritage of food and wine production that is recognised worldwide for its stellar quality and admirable craftsmanship. This book takes a scenic, culinary journey through Sonoma's meandering back roads, visiting notable wineries, food producers, restaurants, and outstanding holiday destinations. Featuring 40 regional recipes, Sonoma illustrates the extraordinary bounty this part of America has to offer.

Gorgeous fine art cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

As a professional photographer, I can appreciate the creative portraits that were chosen for this lushly produced photo driven cook book. The restaurant is fabulous and I am excited to be able to now create the dishes at home. Although, it will be hard pressed to re create the simple elegance of the restaurant, I will save a bit of money by cooking these great recipes in my own kitchen.

THE BEST CHEFF IN LOS ANGELES 5 out of 5 stars.

THE CHEFF ROLAND IS ////THE BEST CHEFF >>>>>GOOD LUCK<<<<<

Editorial Review:

A cookbook from a legendary restaurant, located in the art community of Venice, California and owned by actor Dudley Moore and filmmaker Tony Bill. In addition to seventy-two classic recipes, the book contains 50 portraits of celebrity and art world patrons.

This cookbook will delight people who love to cook, as well as "armchair" chefs, as the seventy-two delicious recipes are illustrated by amusing and whimsical full-page portraits of the restaurant's patrons, some quite famous, actively involved with the food.
