Thank you Charlie 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is so fantastic! It's worth the price just for his beet salad recipe, let alone soup, etc. We are vegetarians and are thrilled to have such nice recipes, for non vegetarians there are wonderful meat recipes..Charlie Trotter has brought his wonderful restaurant food to a home cooking level.

Editorial Review:

Charlie Trotter's most approachable cookbook, HOME COOKING WITH CHARLIE TROTTER is designed for casual home cooks who appreciate top-quality cuisine. Trotter begins by discussing classic methods of preparing food, from braising to grilling to sautéing. He then presents a variety of uptown traditional--as well as an assortment of exotic--starters, entrées, and desserts that have been streamlined with an eye for readily available ingredients and straight-forward techniques, while still bearing the master chef's signature style.

Editorial Review:

On the corner of Bleecker and Eleventh Streets in the heart of Greenwich Village sits the Magnolia Bakery. This unassuming shop, where the smells of home-style baking weaken even the strongest will, has attracted a clientele that ranges from kids on their way home from school to celebrity glitterati. Cupcakes swirled with pastel frosting crowd the counter, and cakestands display Lemon Vanilla Bundt Cake, Apple Walnut Cake with Caramel Cream Cheese Icing, and Coconut Layer Cake, swathed in fluffy white frosting and covered in drifts of coconut. As Time Out New York says: "The secret to Magnolia's success is simple: Nobody knows how to bake like this anymore."

Magnolia's owners Jennifer Appel and Allysa Torey know how, and in The Magnolia Bakery Cookbook they share their most mouth-watering recipes, from sweet breakfast treats like Dried-Cherry Crumb Buns to classic Iced Molasses Cookies, from decadently rich Caramel Pecan Brownies and Raspberry Marzipan Cheesecake to refreshing Lemon Icebox Pie. Their easy-to-follow recipes and invaluable baking hints mean that even the inexperienced baker will be able to frost the perfect layer cake, turn out the flakiest pie crust, and whip up the creamiest cheesecake. Illustrated with eight pages of glorious color photographs, The Magnolia Bakery Cookbook will inspire you to turn on the oven and create sweet memories for your family and friends.

Beware of ATK shady book club enrollment practices 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 26 people found this review helpful.

My experience with ATK purchases is that all customers are automatically enrolled in an ATK book club and are given no opportunity to opt out this book mailing progam during the ordering process. After I placed an ATK order, I started receiving unordered and unwanted ATK books in the mail and billed for same. Involuntarily enrolling customers in their ATK book club seems like a rather shady practice for a supposedly reputable testing lab.

Editorial Review:

Every year, the test cooks at America's Test Kitchen develop hundreds of new recipes for our books, magazines, and highly rated public television show. And every year we collect our favorite recipes (no easy task!) and showcase them in this annual "best of the best" cookbook. Essentially a yearbook of our best recipes and most interesting discoveries, "The Best of America's Test Kitchen 2008" provides a revealing, behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in our test kitchen. Every recipe, from appetizers to desserts, features a write-up explaining why we selected it as a best recipe; we also include make-ahead instructions, tips on where things might go wrong, and step-by-step instructions.

Editorial Review:

Warmly effusive and dear yet gritty, Paula H. Deen seems mythically Southern. But this cooking luminary, proprietor of Savannah, Georgia's Lady & Sons restaurant, is the real thing. The Lady & Sons Just Desserts, her all-sweets follow-up to The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook and The Lady & Sons, Too!, celebrates the Southern sweet tooth with 120 recipes, including traditional formulas for the likes of Brown Sugar Pound Cake and Lemon Chess Pie as well as best-loved restaurant innovations like Turtle Cake, Lemon Curd Pudding, and Gooey Butter Cake. ("These are very, very rich," Deen advises, "and a little goes a long way--even for piggies like me!") Lovers of the restaurant--which grew to prominence from $200 and lots of determination--as well as those seeking easy-to-fix temptations should put this book to happy use.

Among its wide-ranging recipes, Desserts offers Carolyn's Jell-O Cheesecake, Lauren's Chocolate Drizzle Pie, and Hidden Mint Cookies--recipes based on cake mixes and other convenience foods. These creditable sweets are of course work saving, but are perhaps better viewed as solidly characteristic of their time and place. Equally particular are candies like Mamma's Divinity and Uncle Bubba's Benne Candy, and "other sweet things," as Deen dubs them, such as Banana Split Brownie Pizza, Easy Homemade Oreo Ice Cream, and Fresh Apples with Butterscotch Dip. With asides by Deen family members, including son Jamie's "Food Is Love" ("I am right this minute 20 pounds over-loved," he writes), useful tips (Deen provides an "emergency" recipe for sweetened condensed milk), and plenty of piquant anecdote (after Deen had rattled on endlessly to her grandmother about her intention to open a restaurant, the older woman paused and replied, "Paula, have you lost you damned mind?"), the spiral-bound book is not only full of delectable eating, it's lots of fun. --Arthur Boehm

Editorial Review:

"A lot of my memories with my loved ones are set around a dinner table, sharing a meal and sharing good conversation. Food has always been at the center of my joy, from the fish fries my parents had every weekend to the barbecues I have in my backyard today. Food can bring people together, to laugh, to eat, and to simply celebrate life. Most people know me for my voice, and that is truly a gift from God. But food and the ability to share it with others is also a gift -- a gift that you can give to those you love. It is with that spirit that I share my third cookbook." -- Patti LaBelle

Miss Patti is back, as fierce as ever, sharing more than 100 new recipes that will have your mouth watering and your guests begging for seconds! With dishes ranging from the Over the Top, Top, Top Macaroni and Cheese (with shrimp and lobster!), to the Poached Salmon with Basil Cream Sauce and Fettuccine, to the Tender and Juicy Barbecued Baby Back Ribs, to the Fried Apple Pie, there's something perfect for every occasion. She not only walks you through the preparation of her favorite dishes with ease, but also shares heartfelt and witty stories about food, family, and life throughout the book. Her first two cookbooks were hits and this one is sure to please as well.

"You'll see throughout the book that I have used products from my Patti LaBelle Good Life product line. The philosophy behind the brand is that the good life can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of background or how much money you have. It's not about spending a lot of money -- it's about making what you do spend count, taking pride in what you have, and pampering yourself in little ways that make you feel special. This is the thinking behind my signature line of products -- it's accessible to everyone, reasonably priced, simple, and from my heart. So, here's perhaps the most important recipe in this entire book, so memorize it -- it's my recipe for living the good life: keep it simple, make it special, share your heart, and pamper yourself!" -- Patti LaBelle

Cookbook for heavy meat eaters. Not healthy. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Did not enjoy book. Food to heavy and no focus on health, portion control, calories in meal. Too saucy. Would not buy another book from author. Style was very diffrent than showcased on the biggest looser; which by the way was very inspiring. Missed the mark. Great cover.

Not Bad 4 out of 5 stars.

It certainly isn't a basic cookbook that you use constantly, but it is a nice addition to any collection. He has lots of nifty features such how to stock a pantry, and how long each recipe takes. It is good for days that you want to whip up something quick and good (which is the point) with only one drawback, almost all the recipes require some "special" ingredient you are not likely to have around the house. Many of the meals, even though they are meant to be "last minute" require either a trip to the store or some advanced planning, which to me isn't very last minute. However, if I were to go to the store for a quick meal, I would certainly use this book for ideas, as opposed to getting the rotisserie chicken I usually end up with.

Editorial Review:

As “Best New Chef” (Food & Wine, 1999) and “America's Most Exciting Young Chef” (Gourmet, 2000), as well as the star of NBC reality show, The Restaurant (2003), Rocco DiSpirito has developed a loyal following who love his flavorful recipes that can be prepared quickly and with easy to find ingredients. The cookbook is peppered with Rocco's own thoughts about cooking and short cuts that address the importance of having a judicious mix of fresh and prepared foods to suit today's busy lifestyle regardless of the occasion. To emphasize this belief, all 175 of Rocco's favorite recipes can be prepared in 30 minutes or less.

Editorial Review:

Part cookbook—with more than 120 enticing recipes—part culinary history, part inquiry into the evolution of an industry, Milk is a one-of-a-kind book that will forever change the way we think about dairy products.

Anne Mendelson, author of Stand Facing the Stove, first explores the earliest Old World homes of yogurt and kindred fermented products made primarily from sheep’s and goats’ milk and soured as a natural consequence of climate. Out of this ancient heritage from lands that include Greece, Bosnia, Turkey, Israel, Persia, Afghanistan, and India, she mines a rich source of culinary traditions.

Mendelson then takes us on a journey through the lands that traditionally only consumed milk fresh from the cow—what she calls the Northwestern Cow Belt (northern Europe, Great Britain, North America). She shows us how milk reached such prominence in our diet in the nineteenth century that it led to the current practice of overbreeding cows and overprocessing dairy products. Her lucid explanation of the chemical intricacies of milk and the simple home experiments she encourages us to try are a revelation of how pure milk products should really taste.

The delightfully wide-ranging recipes that follow are grouped according to the main dairy ingredient: fresh milk and cream, yogurt, cultured milk and cream, butter and true buttermilk, fresh cheeses. We learn how to make luscious Clotted Cream, magical Lemon Curd, that beautiful quasi-cheese Mascarpone, as well as homemade yogurt, sour cream, true buttermilk, and homemade butter. She gives us comfort foods such as Milk Toast and Cream of Tomato Soup alongside Panir and Chhenna from India. Here, too, are old favorites like Herring with Sour Cream Sauce, Beef Stroganoff, a New Englandish Clam Chowder, and the elegant Russian Easter dessert, Paskha. And there are drinks for every season, from Turkish Ayran and Indian Lassis to Batidos (Latin American milkshakes) and an authentic hot chocolate.

This illuminating book will be an essential part of any food lover’s collection and is bound to win converts determined to restore the purity of flavor to our First Food.
