KamaAina Favorite...Just like Home 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Many tasty local favorites...if only she had pickled mango :-). I make the oyako donburi often as well as furikaki fish (yummy with salmon).

Being away from home and in NYC makes this book priceless for me. No local potlucks, plate lunches, or okazu deli food here, I gotta make my own "ono" food...thank goodness for this book!

Mahalo for sharing Aunty Jean!

Not high brow, but darn good 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

These recipes are easy and straightforward. You don't need to be a gourmand to make these. Although often rather low-brow (cream of mushroom soup, powdered onion soup mix...) I found them actually really good and sort of nostalgic in a comfort food sort of way. These are great recipes for feeding a family without a lot of fuss but still with some flair. I'm not from Hawaii but I think sugar is really loved over there! I had to decrease the sugar sometimes to suit my tongue. Every Hawaiian I know has this book so I think it is really representative of what locals eat at home.

Roy Cooks but must have more to offer 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Book is really a disapointment. It seems to suffer from being a companion book to a TV program and so does not stand up as a cookbook on it's own right. I buy cookbooks for inspiration and ongoing learning but don't care for watching TV Chefs. Chef Yamaguchi it seems is a very creative cook ,but if you are going to try to sell books for $32.50 it needs more stuffing. I want to know more about how he thinks and were his insparation comes from. I feel that bought Sam Choy and Alan Wong offer more of this to my understanding. I would have also liked to have the English names listed in the recipes. I spent a lot of time looking in the Pantry section to find out what the differant ingredants were.

Editorial Review:

In this full-colour cookbook, television chef Roy Yamaguchi introduces a comprehensive pantry that describes his favourite ingredients in detail and carefully explains how flavours, textures, and colours play off and complement each other on the plate. Fresh, Hawaiian-grown ingredients combine with French cooking techniques to produce a mouth-watering collection of recipes with eastern and western influences.

You need to get this! 5 out of 5 stars.

I got this as a present from my friend whose family grew up in Hawaii. I LOVE this cookbook! I actually lost it but I bought another at a bookstore because I couldn't go without it. I have many cookbooks but this is the one that I use the most. I have made almost all of the chicken dishes. The wing recipes are fantastic! I refuse to eat at any of the surburban chain wing restaurants because they lack flavor compared to these. The recipes are very easy and I found all of the ingredients at a grocery store or asian store. Because I love it so much, I'm about to order her other cookbook "Best Local Dishes"!

Fantastic food 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I just ate at Josselin's restaturant at Ceasar's in Las Vegas, 808 (Hawaii's area code). It bills itself as a Hawaiian/French fusion restaurant. It was the best food I've ever had. I did not realize that I had his cookbook until I went to the restaurant. The huli-huli chicken is great, as is the pineapple-maccadamia nut rice. The only problem with the book is that many of the ingredients are difficult/impossible to find outside of Hawaii.

recipes were delightful and easy to follow 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed this book immensely. One of the best cookbooks I have used. The multi-ethnic recipes were great. I have used many of these recipes when entertaining business clients in my home. Makes me want to visit one of his restaurants. When will he be publishing another book?

Editorial Review:

This book is perfect for all those who love to cook and read about food, but who also love to linger in the daydream of tropical and exotic locales. A Taste of Hawaii combines these two passions of travel and Pacific Rim cooking, which made this title irresistible, going beyond the typical Hawaiian "luau" cuisine, this book features Hawaiian food that is based on fresh ingredients combined with indigenous seafood and tropical produce. The photos, shot on location, are as delicious as the recipes.

Wonderfully Yummy! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a great cookbook for mochi enthusiasts! I LOVE this book. I have made the blueberry and strawberry mochi from this book. Some recipes are time consuming and some are super easy. Just depends on what kind of challenge you are up for. The reward is a yummy mochi concotion! So ONO!

Awesome book! If you like mochi you must buy it! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The recipes in this book are easy to understand and follow. They offer many classic recipes (daifuku, dango, anko mochi, etc.) as well as many twists (strawberry mochi, etc.) I've made strawberry mochi from this book a few times for Japanese people and they love it. Fun to make fun to eat!

Editorial Review:

What’s chewy and moist, comes in all shapes and flavors, great for picnics, parties, office treats for coffee break and EASY to prepare? Why, it’s a mochi dessert - always popular in Hawaii!

In this grand collection of mochi recipes, not only can you find traditional recipes and today’s popular mochi desserts all in one cookbook, but also included are entrees, such as Siu Mai with Mochi Rice, Crisp Fried Shrimp, and Mochiko Chicken.

There is also a microwave section for today’s busy lifestyle. The average microwave cooking time is around 10 minutes. Best of all, most mochi desserts can be prepared a day ahead and require no refrigeration.

Loved the ease of instruction in making sushi. Not hard to follow, well done. Also like the homespun family history. It is a great guide to not only sushi but everthing else in his style. A lot of fun.

excellent even for beginners 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

For beginners, there's a nice introduction to different basic japanese foods and rolling techniques with pictures. There are recipes for sushi, and small and large entrees. I've been to one of the two Sansei restaurants on Maui and the recipes from this book definately cover some of the best things on their menu. The only minor change I could see to make it better is more information about using pre-made grocery store sauces instead of making everything from scratch.

Editorial Review:

At Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar in Hawaii, chef Dave D.K. Kodamas exciting culinary style wins rave reviews and attracts fans in ever-increasing numbers. In this collection of popular restaurant dishes, D.K. begins with a primer on making sushi at home, describing basic ingredients and techniques and presenting easy-to-follow instructions for delicious combinations both familiar and new. Small-plate and large-plate recipes follow.

Onolicious! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

From Shoyu Hot Dogs to Lamb Wellington "Indianne" with Tropical Fruit Chutney, two local authors have hit the nail on the head with their new cookbook, What Hawaii Likes to Eat.
A collection of 130 recipes submitted by readers of a Honolulu daily newspaper, the range of dishes and tastes are as varied as the multi-cultural and chop suey residents of Hawaii.
If there is one thing that all people like to do is eat, and with so many influences in the Crossroads of the Pacific, it would be impossible for even the most finicky of eaters not to discover something in this book that would make their mouths water.
Cookbook writer and editor Muriel Miura teamed with the newspaper's food editor Betty Shimabukuro and asked the professional cooks and chefs along with the experts -- the eaters -- What do Hawaii folks like to eat?
After months of reading, testing and eating, the result is this spiral-bound cookbook -- with the required color photos needed for any amateur Pacific Rim food preparer to serve a mouth-watering dish.
What Hawaii likes to eat will provide comfort food for those who grew up on the plantation: Chicken Hekka, Musubi and Mango Seed; for those townies who were raised in Honolulu or Hilo: Loco Moco, Hamburger Steak and Chicken Katsu; for those who love luau food: Chicken Long Rice, Laulau, Lomi Salmon and Haupia; and for those who appreciate the ambiance as much as the meal: Cavalier Restaurant's Lobster Thermidor, Hiroshi Eurasian Tapas' Garlic Shichimi Ahi with Ponzu Vinagrette and Kahala Resort and Hotel's Roasted Garlic Rack of Lamb with Garlic and Herbs.
For poi dog palates, try Napua Steven's Taro Biscuits, Arare Cookies and Sam Choy's Hawaiian Pulehu Tri-Tip Steak.
The kamaaina baby boomers and their parents may remember Jolly Roger's Orange Bread, Queen's Surf Chicken Kamaaina and Little George's Shrimp Scampi. The Stewart's Pharmacy Corn Bread would bring a tear to the eye of anyone who frequented the once-popular Waikiki establishment.
But for all the fancy Lavosh, Orange Souffle, Golden Phoenix Claws and Scalloped Potatoes that are in this book, perhaps the most intriguing recipe is the first -- and possibly the simplest -- the "Oki Dog," an American, Mexican, Tex-Mex and Okinawan Fusion creation, which is a bright red, crispy Redondo hot dog, Zippy's chili, shoyu pork and iceberg lettuce all wrapped up in a tortilla.
The delicacy was actually first served on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood by Sakai "Jimmy" Sueyoshi, an Okinawa native who got rich selling his "Oki Dogs," and brought to Hawaii by one of the organizers of the Okinawan Festival who replaced the shredded pastrami that Sueyoshi used with the shoyu pork.
Onolicious.

Editorial Review:

A collection of the most popular and loved dishes Hawaii's kama'aina remember, enjoy, and continue to eat at restaurants and in homes throughout the islands. From Chicken Katsu to Spam Musubi, it's all here with cooking tips and stories about chefs and hole-in-the-wall restaurants of days gone-by. If it's true that we are what we eat, then Hawaii is a genuine melting pot where people meld customs and share tradtions on plates full of kimchee, adobo, scalloped potatoes, and a side of rice.

Shopping? 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The book itself is fantastic. The only problem I have with it, are the ingredients. I bought this so I could remember some of the food I had while Maui. Many of the recipes have ingredients that can only be bought there. Or are in Hawaiian and I have no idea what would be a good substitute. In order to cook something I have to do some research to find out how to get many of the things this book is good for.

If you have a store near by that sells some of these Hawaiian foods...then this is an excellent book. If you are stuck in suburbia main land USA..it could be more difficult.

Longhi's recipes just don't taste particularly good 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As a longtime resident in Hawaii I am the first to say Longhi's restaurants tends to have nice atmosphere. Period. I go to Longhi's sometimes for a drink and appetizers during their happy hour ( otherwise their very very high prices should send you to a much better restaurant with nice atmoshpere, not too hard to find in Hawaii either ). Do to the atmosphere I will recommend Longhi's for a stop, during Happy Hour.

However, it is common knowledge among many Hawaii residents that the food at Longhi's is nothing to write home about, at all. I was the recipient of a Longhi's cookbook so tried many recipes and unfortunately, even with an extra loving touch and buying the most high quality of ingredients, every dish failed to impress. Sadly the cookbook like the restaurant puts up a nice front with very little true quality substance to back it up.

Editorial Review:

In this colourful cookbook, self-trained chef and opinionated restauranteur Bob Longhi reveals his cooking philosophy - the secret ingredient that makes dining at Longhi's an experience. Nearly 100 classic and contemporary recipes are accompanied by anecdotes and reflections.

Great local desserts! 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Don't be apprehensive because you can't see the cover! This book is full of delicious results that are ultimately simple. A few recipes include store bought packaged products such as cake or brownie mix, but the majority of recipes are based on "from scratch" recipes that have been passed along and shared between close family and friends through generations in Hawai'i. If you've lived in Hawaii or have visited Hawai'i and long for the desserts you so easily remember, this book is a must. Recipes like Pineapple Delight (ready in under half an hour) and Pumpkin Crunch (you HAVE to try this one!) are extremely delicious - having made both with excellent results and ease of preparation. The Hawaiian Jell-o Dessert also got rave reviews from family and friends and is very delicious with a macadamia shortbread crust and 'secret' cream cheese layer (it's mixed with black cherry jell-o and heavy cream) topped off with a layer of lime jell-o. While these desserts are very tempting and easy to make, I couldn't give a five star rating because the recipe listed "2 loaf pans" for the recipe and did not indicate that it was necessary to use 9 in. loaf pans or else you would end up with leftover cream cheese and jell-o. Other than that, this is the book I bake from most often. Some recipes might seem a bit exotic, such as Okinawan Sweet Potato pie with Haupia Topping, Coconut Custard Mochi, or Macadamia Cream Pie, but I'm fairly sure you should be able to find all ingredients at your local grocer. There are four pages of color photographs.
