Editorial Review:

With this cookbook you will have the pleasure of preparing recipes that showcase the delicious bounty of fruit and vegetables that come from New Jersey's gardens, orchards, and farmstands. While it is the country's fifth-smallest state, the appropriately named Garden State produces tons of succulent produce every year. What a feast for the senses! The state is ablaze with colors-picture vivid green peppers and inky blueberries. Imagine the intense pleasure of biting into a juicy red tomato or a crisp, tangy apple. Think about the scent of strawberries or the sweet flavor of corn on the cob. Recall the feel of plump, fuzzy peaches and smooth slick cranberries. Fresh Tastes from the Garden State presents new ways for you to savor the flavors of New Jersey's top fruits and vegetables and capitalize on the health dividends they pay. Presented in an easy-to-use format, the book features dozens of color photographs. It is conveniently divided into chapters brimming with luscious recipes spotlighting New Jersey berries (strawberries, blueberries, and cranberries), peaches, apples, tomatoes, peppers, and corn. Many of the recipes are quick and easy enough to fit into anyone's hectic lifestyle and so delectable they'll become family favorites for everyday. Health-conscious cooks will be happy to know that fat is never used gratuitously and the calorie and nutrient content of each recipe is included. Carol Byrd-Bredbenner also includes information on the history, botany, and safe storage of fruits and vegetables. Every recipe has been kitchen tested and tasted by discerning diners to be certain that they are absolutely delicious. When you serve them, you'll hear forks clanking, lips smacking, and reviewers raving. Enjoy!

Very little useful information 1 out of 5 stars.

This book is essentially worthless if you've ever gone crabbing before. There is almost no science-based information and little behavioral information about crabs in this book. This book could have been 5 pages long.

I have well over 200 cookbooks and am always happy to find a special one to add to my collection. This is a WINNER! I just got it and have already tried several and they were all excellent. This is a cookbook that is easy to read, has 208 recipes and is also the kind to give as a gift because of it's beautiful cover. Anyone who loves to stay at B & B's will find the recipes delicious and unique and will definitely want to go to Cape May, NJ and stay at the Angel of The Sea. You'll definitely want to try the Dutch Apple French Toast, Peach Crisp, Coffee Muffins, Angel Lemon Squares, Rocky Road Squares, White Chocolate Almond Cheesecake, and the Hot Chipped Beef Spread. I truly can't say enough about this excellent cookbook. You will reach for this one time and time again as I know I will.

Recipe for a wonderful book 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Donna Leahy has done something few cookbook authors do: write a book that's not just a collection of terrific recipes, but a beautifully written, witty and touching story about following a dream. As a result of the book, my wife and I not only make her recipes at home, but actually went to their inn and enjoyed a deliciously romantic weekend in all aspects. Donna, and her husband, Bob, are the consumate hosts. I cannot recommend this book (and their inn) highly enough.

Inn-credible! 5 out of 5 stars.

The terrific recipes are accompanied by heartwarming photographs and an all American story. All three should be experienced.

Editorial Review:

Sarah Tyson (Heston) Rorer is considered to be the first dietician in America. In 1882, she founded the Philadelphia Cooking School. Rorer's philosophy of dietetics (using food to maintain health and treat disease) became the cornerstone of her recipes. Through her columns in a Philadelphia-based monthly, Table Talk, and in Ladies' Home Journal, her fame spread. By 1895, she had become so famous that she gave her cooking lectures at Madison Square Garden. The Philadelphia Cook Book was the first of over 50 cookbooks Rorer published. The recipes are classic and easy to follow, with clear instructions and familiar lists of ingredients at the head of each recipe.
