Editorial Review:

What does Aureole's award-winning chef whip up for his family and friends when he has to do all the shopping and cooking just like the rest of us? Food that's easy, delicious, and casual.

Charlie Palmer shows how to make comfort foods that are comfortable, but with a new level of taste and sophistication.Sunday supper suddenly becomes sensational. And those quick mid-week meals are still quick to prepare; they just don't taste that way. Corn chowder is heartier, more intense. Traditional tuna melts become untraditional with fresh tuna, tapenade, and Fontina. That childhood favorite, Waldorf salad becomes a modern classic with apple cider, walnut oil, and a pinch of curry powder.

Baked Lemon Chicken with a pile of garlic bread, a bowl of cheesy orzo or rice and a big salad of romaine will become a Saturday night favorite, just as it is in Charlie's house. Turn Sunday's leftover Perfect Roast Chicken into Monday's Chicken Noodle Soup or Aioli Chicken Salad.

When company comes calling and you're looking for something a bit more sophisticated, try Charlie's Whole Roasted Salmon with New Potatoes and Leeks and Baked Wild Mushroom Salad or Lamb Shanks with Tomatoes, Lentils and Olives. Or, if you want to treat company just like family, feed them Charlie's Mom's Barbecued Chicken, Perfect Pot Roast or a heaping platter of Linguini with Eggplant Ragu.

And what about desserts? Charlie has something to bring out the kid in everyone. Try his Brownie-Ice Cream Sandwiches or Apple Pizza with Cider Sorbet. His Pumpkin Custard is so easy and versatile, it can be baked family-style in one large dish or in individual souffle cups when company is expected. Serve the custard with a plate of Ginger Cookies.

So what does one of New York's most celebrated chefs cook for his family and friends? Exactly what you can cook for yours with Charlie Palmer's Casual Cooking.

Highly recommended both for Maryland history buffs, cooks, and armchair travelers alike 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Authors Debbie Nunley and Karen Jane Elliot have been on a quest to find those who are passionate about both fine dining and historic preservation, and Maryland provided them with the best opportunities to visit restaurants steeped in both fine food and rich history. A Taste Of Maryland History: A Guide To Historic Eateries And Their Recipes thus serves two distinct purposes: as a survey of Maryland historic establishments it provides would-be travelers with a guide to fine historic eating houses across the state, providing an entire page of history to compliment the authors' descriptions of the atmosphere and offerings they experienced today. And as a cookbook, it provides a fine collection of these signature dishes, selecting several from each establishment which have been adapted to home cook proportions. Enjoy Pan-Roasted Scallops with Ginger and Lemon Grass or Buffalo-Style Pizza in a fine gathering. Highly recommended both for Maryland history buffs, cooks, and armchair travelers alike.

Editorial Review:

Continuing their popular Taste of History series, Nunley and Elliott feature over 75 restaurants in this combination travel guide/cookbook. The book highlights restaurants located in buildings of historic interest, many of which are more than 100 years old. Old train stations; historic hotels, homes, and vacation retreats; as well as sites along the National Road are examples of some of the locales that are featured. In addition to historical background and anecdotal information, there are two or three recipes chosen by the restaurant's chef given for each entry. The book's recipe selection is evidence that there's so much more than crab in Maryland.

Editorial Review:

Ever wondered how your favorite restaurant makes that special dish you love? Have you tried to recreate it at home and it just wasn't the same? Vicki J. Caparulo persuaded New Jersey's favorite chefs to share their kitchen secrets in Great Dishes from New Jersey's Favorite Restaurants, so now you can make these fabulous dishes at home.

Inside you'll find more than 50 delicious pasta, meat, seafood, poultry, game meats, dessert, soup, and salad recipes from the best-loved eateries in New Jersey, along with dozens of mouthwatering color photographs by professional food photographer Steve Caparulo.

Vicki J. Caparulo, a Certified Culinary Professional, provides more than a simple list of ingredients and instructions. She shows you why the recipe works in a professional setting and how you can make it work at home. Caparulo, a recipe developer and cooking teacher, has written the recipes in an easy-to-use format, in detail and with care so anyone can be successful. Written with her offbeat and sometimes irreverent sense of humor, Caparulo's anecdotes about the restaurants, the chefs, and her own experiences in their kitchens make this book a great read, even for non-cooks. She also provides locations and contact information for every restaurant included in the book.

In addition to the actual preparation procedures and techniques, Caparulo provides instructions on everything from sanitizing your kitchen to storing herbs, roasting garlic, and debearding mussels. She defines cooking terminology in easy to understand language, recommends the tools you'll need, and tells you where to find them.

This book has a recipe for everyone--and with the author's friendly, easy-going style and expert advice, you can make them all!

Too Modern For Me 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

What I thought I was getting was a series of recipes taken from the account books of Thomas Jefferson. What I got was updated 20th century recipes for the modern reader. They are okay though there are mistakes in techniques and ingredients but for someone not into pure food history one should pass by.

Editorial Review:

Tastefully enhanced with Helen Bullock's essay "Thomas Jefferson . . . Gourmet, " this collection of recipes for delicious puddings, creams, cakes, ices, meats, fish, sauces, and soups is both informative and inspiring. Kimball has fully adapted each recipe to practical modern use by reducing the enormous proportions of the eighteenth-century kitchen to today's more familiar servings.

Easy cooking for busy people! 4 out of 5 stars.

Nancy Clark has become one of my favorite nutrition authors. This book is easy to read with basic nutrition advice in the first section. The second section consists of nutrition enhancing, simple to follow recipes that do not require much time or fancy ingredients. I tried many different banana bread recipes from different cookbooks and found the one in this book not only the easiest, but also the best tasting. When I can't decide what to eat I pull out this book and always find some inspiration.

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

Ten years on and I still think this is the best when it comes to running nutrition and diets. The energy bars beat any Powerbar in my book, and the energy drinks and simple and useful. I use it from time to time to re-evaluate my diet based on how much I'm running. Love to see it updated!

Editorial Review:

The New York City Marathon Cookbook is far more than just a collection of 262 favorite recipes contributed by hungry runners. The first five chapters provide nutrition guidance for all endurance athletes who want to know how to eat well to prevent fatigue and optimize their health.
