Philadelphia Main Line Classics 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have about 15 cookbooks. This is the one I go to when I want to make something special. This statement though is somewhat misleading, because I go to it for everyday meals that taste special. Even my kids go to it when they feel like cooking something because they know they have had some great meals based on many of the recipes in this book. The recipes are well written and easy to follow. Some of our favorites include chicken a l'orange, coq au vin, chicken parmesan, herbed beans, cowboy cookies. They are easy to make with these recipes and taste great. You won't find every recipe you're looking for in here, but you will find something for every meal and for every part of a meal - appetizer, soup, main dish, dessert. I've even adapted some of their recipes to incorporate leftovers we have on hand and thus have a wonderful meal that no one would suspect is made from leftovers. Oh and we love the apple cranberry crisp.

Editorial Review:

Now in its seventh printing, Main Line Classics is a delightful cookbook with over 400 pages of double-tested, delicious, easy to prepare recipes.

* 700 "classic" kitchen-tested favorites from Saturday Club members, friends, celebrities and restaurants.

* Complete planned menus for buffets, brunches, lunches and other fun gatherings at the beginning of each section.

* Beautiful illustrations and historical facts about the Main Line train stations and the towns they helped to create.

* Featured on the NBC Today Show.

* Laminated hard cover with comb binding to lay flat while cooking.

* Over $170,000 has been donated to local charities from the sale of this book and our second cookbook, "Main Line Classics II; Cooking Up a Little History."

This is an excellent cookbook. I own hundreds of cookbooks--it's my hobby--and I entertain a lot.I have yet to try a recipe from here that doesn't get rave reviews. (Try the BBQ leg of lamb; my guests actually REQUEST it repeatedly!--And then serve it with "Toad Hill Mint Sauce" from the Rochester Junior League's other book, Applehood and Motherpie.)

Editorial Review:

Frederick Philip Stieff, son of the piano-making Baltimore family, was a celebrated amateur chef and a sort of menu historian. He made a personal crusade of collecting -- mainly using hand-written family papers and the memories of aged cooks -- old Maryland recipes. This volume, he declares in his foreword, offers merely "a generalization, a diversification of the receipts [as he calls them] which have for decades contributed to the gastronomic supremacy of Maryland."

Cooking and mixing instructions cover, in separate chapters, everything from oysters, a specialty of the counties bordering on the bay, to buckwheat and maple syrup, indigenous to western Maryland. Stieff fills out the stories behind many of the recipes in accompanying headnotes: the recipe for Ellin North Pudding, for example, was handed down by Ellin North, born in Baltimore in 1740 and later married to John Moale, the Colonel of the Baltimore Town Militia, to her great-grandson, Walter de Curzon Poultney. There are also several interesting appendices: one gives us the menu for a traditional hunt breakfast at Elkridge; another spells out what was served at the Maryland Institute's "Grand Banquet of the Railways Celebrations" in 1857; yet another itemizes the food that George Mann (of Mann's Tavern, Annapolis) procured in December 1783 to stage a dinner celebrating the end of war with Britain.

"Eating in Maryland was a continuous feast, not alone because of the prodigality of its table, but because of the warmth of its ever welcoming hospitality. And certainly it seems to be that in this book... the traditions of Maryland's hospitality, no less than those merely of its kitchens, will be preserved for all time." -- Emily Post

Featuring color photography and a spiral binding 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Shenandoah Valley has been home to Mennonites and Amish whose culinary skills and traditions have pleased palates and satisfied hungry appetites for many generations. Phyllis Good is the curator of The People's Place Quilt Museum and the author of "The Best of Amish Cooking" and "The Festival Cookbook", as well as the co-author of four other cookbooks drawing from Amish and Mennonite culinary traditions. Kate Good co-authored "Amish Cooking For Kids" along with her sister, Rebecca, and her mother, Phyllis. Together, mother and daughter have collaborated to once again showcase recipes from the Shenandoah Valley region, with Kate researching and writing the profiles of the Shenandoah Valley Towns associated with the recipes in this culinary compendium. Featuring color photography and a spiral binding allowing Mennonite Recipes From The Shenandoah Valley to lay flat upon the kitchen counter, the recipes range from Blueberry Oat Muffins, to German Potato Salad, to Sweet Potato and Apple Casserole, to Dutch Meat Loaf, to Old-Fashioned Egg Custard, to Golden Carrot Cake. If you only have time enough for one new cookbook for your kitchen, make it Mennonite Recipes From The Shenandoah Valley!

Editorial Review:

Known for its piercing mountain ranges, its soft hill pastures, and its Civil War secrets, Virginia's Shenandoah Valley is also the home of thousands of Mennonites.

Their foods are as lush and as whole as the land on which it is grown and prepared.

Here are hundreds of those uncommonly tasty recipes, gathered from a comforting food tradition, rooted in the old South. Includes color photographs of the community and its people, and historic sketches of many of the Valley's small towns.
