Honest to Goodness is very true.......... 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a Springfield, Illinois native and can tell you that these recipes are well known in the Springfield area. The recipes in this book are very very good.

Some of my favorites include.....Lemon Shake-Ups as seen at the Illinois State Fair, Steak Diane as served at Baur's On the Green, Funnel Cakes And the all time Springfield favorite... HORSESHOES... if you don't know what this is I urge you to buy the book for that recipe alone! You will love it!

2005 Writers Notes Book Award Winner 5 out of 5 stars.

It's a pity Abe Lincoln wasn't much of a gourmet. His hometown of Springfield had wonderful recipes. Honest to Goodness covers the gamut of the Midwestern dining experience. The soups and breads, like many of the main courses, service both everyday and elegant occasions. This cookbook is simple, appealing, and full of charming Abe stories to make it a great read as well.

My favorite cook book ever 5 out of 5 stars.

I was given this book years ago as a gift when moving away from IL. I have well over 40 cookbooks in my collection. This one is, by far, my favorite. All recipes are easy to prepare and each one has been a hit in our home. I LOVE this cookbook. In the past, I have purchased cookbooks by favorite cooks, only to be disappointed to find many recipes are out of the ordinary fare, which have gone over like a lead balloon with my children. I have yet to prepare something from this book, which my children won't eat. It is a true representation of midwestern favorite foods. The potato soup recipe is a favorite at out house.

Recipes come out as good as the restaurant's fare 5 out of 5 stars.

I've eaten at the Dove's Nest twice. Each time I tried something new, from the appetizer to the dessert. I bought the recipe book on the second visit. I've cooked several dinners from it, as have my mom and sister-in-law. We all have had rave reviews on the outcome. Some recipes are quick and delicious, others are more complicated and elegant. Overall, it was a great purchase.

Editorial Review:

First published in 1986 and now back in print, 'The Minnesota Ethnic Food Book' explores the rich landscape of food and cultural heritage by describing the traditional foods and foodways of many of the state's ethnic groups. Well-researched and thoughtfully written essays describe the meals and customs that help families maintain ties to their past and sustain a rich sense of ethnic heritage in their day-to-day lives. Over 150 authentic recipes, collected from home cooks across the state, impart the ethnic flavours of Minnesota. Included are recipes for everyday tables-such as Swedish meatballs, Creole chicken, and Hmong stir-fried chicken and vegetables-as well as foods for special occasions-including Greek artichoke pilaf, German sauerbraten, and Danish custard cream layer cake. The result is a carefully researched, warm, and fascinating book that is all about people, foods, and enduring values.

Great book ! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have an original copy of this wonderful book. You will find pinches and dashes and teacups for measurements in this volume. It even tells how to stoke the fire! I make the bread pudding recipe and it is a favorite with my family. In using this book you might have to do some trial and error for the degrees and the measurments for the recipes. For example Tea cups usually hold 4oz and not 8oz. It true fun for the kitchen, and the housekeeping is an interesting look at yesteryear. And we think that housework is hard now...NO WAY!!!!

Editorial Review:

Originally published in 1877, this facsimile edition of one of the premier cookbooks from the nineteenth century covers all facets of cooking and housekeeping including breadmaking, cakemaking, confectionary, canning fruits, catsups and sauces, ices and ice cream, pastry, puddings, preserves, soups, management of help, carving, cutting and curing meats, hints for the well and for the sick, and medical and floral advice. By the second edition this collection of recipes from housewives and homemakers all across the country had sold more than 25,000 copies. Included are recipes from women of all walks of life from all across the country, including the wives of state governors (Mrs. Bradley of Nevada contributed a chili recipe). There's even a recipe from Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes. The book's popularity was not limited to Ohio or the mid-West.
