The Book I Almost Missed Out On 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

We took a trip to Michigan in the mid 1990's. I saw this book and wanted it badly, but was short on money. After I did not get it, I was so upset that I called the store a few weeks after our vacation ended and they did not know what I was talking about. They finally found the book and I was able to buy it via phone. Signed copy, no less!

What a fun and interesting book. Over 1300 recipes are collected here from historical sources, captured as originally written. There is a delightful intro which gives insight into the authors' perspective. A few recipes have been modified for modern kitchens, but most of them are left as they were.

Names and dates of the contributors are included in case you have a relative in there- you will know it!

Here is the table of contents, since little information is given here about the book.

The text is easy to read, nice font, and has a smattering of vintage pictures included. Sometimes recipes will have remarks from the cook included, which is delightful.

The hints and suggestions are fun to read too- they are also vintage.

The authors also have included comments if they have tried a recipe and found it to be particularly fun or interesting.

There is a recipe for Watermelon Cake, but it is a fascimile, not actual watermelon as an ingredient.

The recipes include everything from huckleberries to split pea pie crust and most of them are delicious. The book is hard bound and stays open well for cooking from too. Nice binding so far.

If you enjoy going to a 19th century type living museum and find yourself fascinated by the cooks in the old kitchens and what they are doing, this is a must have book for you.

I highly recommend it for the historical and cooking value of the book. It transports me back in time every time I read it.

Editorial Review:

"We have eaten a lot of very fine meals traveling around the country the last twenty years, but there isn't one we remember more fondly than the last time Evelyn Birkby invited us for supper at her house in Iowa....Everything at that meal was connected to people Evelyn knew and to the Iowa she loves. It wasn't just food; it was stories, it was neighbors, it was a single supper that sang about a whole way of life. And that is what we adore about this cookbook Evelyn has written. It isn't only recipes. It is the biography of a community. It is fun and entertaining and useful; but perhaps more important than any of those good things, it is a true portrait of an era not so long ago and a place that doesn't seem so far away and the people who lived there and the times and rituals they shared....We are grateful Evelyn has shared her memories and her zeal and the wisdom of the place where she has lived."—Jane and Michael Stern from the foreword.

What can Evelyn Birkby possibly do to follow up the success of Neighboring on the Air: Cooking with the KMA Radio Homemakers? She can do what she has done in writing Up a Country Lane Cookbook. For forty-three years she has written a column entitled "Up a Country Lane" for the Shenandoah Evening Sentinel. Now she has chosen the best recipes from her column and interspersed them with a wealth of stories of rural life in the 1940s and 1950s, supplemented by a generous offering of vintage photographs. She has created a book that encompasses lost time.

With chapters on "The Garden," "Grocery Stores and Lockers," "Planting," and "Saturday Night in Town," to name a few, Up a Country Lane Cookbook recalls the noble simplicity of a life that has all but vanished. This is not to say that farm life in the forties and fifties was idyllic. As Birkby writes, "Underneath the pastoral exterior were threats of storms, droughts, ruined crops, low prices, sickness, and accidents."

Following the Second World War, many soldiers returned to mid-America and a life of farming. From her vantage point as a farm wife living in Mill Creek Valley in southwestern Iowa, Birkby observed the changes that accompanied improved roads, telephone service, and the easy availability of electricity. Her observations have been carefully recorded in her newspaper column, read by thousands of rural Iowans.

Up a Country Lane Cookbook is, then, much more than a cookbook. It is an evocation of a time in all its wonder and complexity which should be read by everyone from Evelyn Birkby's nearest neighbor in Mill Creek Valley to the city slicker seeking an education. Cook a meal of Plum-Glazed Baked Chicken, Elegant Peas, Creamed Cabbage, and Seven-Grain Bread, then finish it off with Frosted Ginger Creams with Fluffy Frosting. While the chicken is baking, read Evelyn's stories and think about the world the way it was.

Essential addition to every OH kitchen! 5 out of 5 stars.

Having loved "A Taste of Pennslyvania History", I was so excited to get this book. Taste of Ohio History is just as wonderful as the authors' first book. Plan on getting every book in the series--I look forward to all 50 books (just ordered Virginia and anxiously await Maryland). The writing is wonderful and the descriptions of the restaurants and the recipes are such a great addition to my kitchen bookshelf.

Loved it! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was very interesting from a historical standpoint, with an added bonus of interesting recipes. I haven't tried any yet, but am looking forward to it.

Editorial Review:

The authors culled a list of 500 restaurants to come up with over 100 noteworthy establishments profiled here. Most are housed in buildings over 100 years old. Of equal interest are the two or three recipes from each restaurant. Restaurants in old train stations, churches, schools, jails, frontier cabins, farmhouses—whatever your preferred ambiance, you'll find it here.

Editorial Review:

American country cooking is a story of cows and chickens, grains and fresh vegetables and wild berries. It is simple and honest and touched with nostalgia, a bit of ethnicity, regionality, and history. This excellent selection of delicious home-style recipes by veteran food writer Beatrice Ojakangas highlights dishes that reflect many parts of the country and many different cuisines. Her recipe for Swedish Meatballs includes sauces adaptable for Asian-, Indian-, Italian-, and Russian-style meals, while her moist and sumptuous Chocolate-Applesauce Cake is a distinctive Dutch favorite, and her original Country-Style Ice Cream is a traditional treat all will love. Each recipe has been tested and reworked to make it easy to prepare with today’s ingredients and a joy to share with friends and family.

“A delightful hit parade of native classics.” —Publishers Weekly

Beatrice Ojakangas is the author of more than twenty cookbooks, including The Great Scandinavian Baking Book and Scandinavian Feasts, both published by Minnesota. She lives in Duluth, Minnesota.

Editorial Review:

Developing recipes and sharing the results has been a lifelong vocation for Rae Katherine Eighmey. Today her kitchen library has thousands of recipes from 19th and 20th century cookbooks and pioneers' journals and magazines. It is her goal to make them easy for today's cooks to make in their own kitchens, and she has adapted hundreds of them for modern cooking methods. She says translating these recipes is part detective story, part chemistry and part old-fashioned cooking skill.
