One of the Best 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

As a collector of cookbooks (more than 600 titles) with an emphasis on the "Junior League" books, this is one of my all-time favorites. I have tried many, many recipes and they are all great. I found lots of "different" recipes that were simple to make and tasted great. Definitely add this one to your collection.

The BEST cookbook ever. 5 out of 5 stars.

The cookbook has never failed me. I have given it to several people as a gift and they also raved about it. Has both simple and complex recipes. Also need tidbits about Cincinnati in the margins.

My Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this cookbook. It is one of my favorites - I've never been disappointed with any recipe I have tried. The design is aesthetically pleasing, the facts about Cincinnati are interesting (and I lived there for four years), and the Teller's House Salad can't be beat. I've bought this cookbook at least five times for friends and family and will continue to do so. My only complaint ... where is volume 2?? :-)

Hollyhocks & Radishes` 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Hollyhocks & Radishes is a delightful journal that originated with Judith Chard's Summer roadside vegetable stand in the Upper Pennisula of Michingan. Not only were fresh-grown vegetables available, but also the delicious recipes that could be created with them. Soon customers became friends corresponding with their own recipes and anecdotes. The book is illustrated with handwritten letters and drawings along with Mrs. Chard's wisdom and advice about the season's, birds, flowers, and, of course, her recipes. It's a great book to read on a cold winter's day when you're longing for Summer. Out of our collection of probably 100 cookbooks, this is our favorite. It's always my gift for a Bride-to-Be.

Editorial Review:

A unique look at a little-known corner of America, Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula, where the simple values of life--family, friends, the good earth and good food it produces--still abide. The book is a compilation of happy thoughts and memories of good times and good food that can be made with these unique recipes. This award-winning cookbook is filled with Americana nostalgia and 330 wonderful recipes.

Editorial Review:

This book, by history and photograph, recipe and anecdote, recounts the lately forgotten story of the Germans in Milwaukee and the profound influence these German-speaking immigrants and their descendants had upon the dynamic city of today. Author Trudy Knauss Paradis, with the assistance of E.J. Brumder, beautifully sets forth this extraordinary history; from the early German-speaking arrivals to Milwaukee County in the 1830s, to the vibrant German Athens on Lake Michigan which these immigrants and their children created, to the suppression of German identity following the two World Wars, to the renaissance of German ancestral pride of today. Together, Ms. Knauss Paradis, Director-in-Charge of Cultural Exhibition for German Fest Milwaukee and a child of German-born immigrants; and Mr. Brumder, local historian and scion of the Brumder German-language publishing empire, provide a well-rounded view of not only what it has meant and still means to be German in Milwaukee, but also an insightful portrayal of an often brilliant, culturally vibrant and always industrious community which has enriched Milwaukee at every conceivable level.

I've been cooking from this book for almost 20 years! The recipes are simple, yet sofisticated, and wonderfully tasty. The recipes are well-written and methods are well explained, so that even the novice cook can enjoy this book. I've given this book as a gift to many people and they too, now find it a favorite.

Editorial Review:

This award-winning cookbook was brilliantly orchestrated by the Ravinia Festival Women's Board as a way to raise money for music scholarships and the venerated music festival. This harmonious collection of more than 600 recipes is the result of three years of collecting, testing, tasting, collating, and indexing. These dishes stand the test of time and include spectacular picnic fare, simple family dinners, and special occasion dishes. With recipes ranging from homey pumpkin bread and elegant leek and chevre tarts to simple pickled beets and lavish Chicken Wellington with Champagne Sauce, there are choices to suit everyone's tastes. Music lovers might want to try guest conductor Claudio Abbado's Crab Caponata and Ravinia music director James Levine's Classic Chicken Salad, or Variations on a Brownie and Summer Symphony Soup. These scores of recipes for every cook, from the novice to the gourmet, make a great hostess, wedding, or shower gift.

Editorial Review:

America is coming back to basics, and nowhere is the art of transforming fresh, seasonal ingredients into appealingly homey dishes practiced with more flair than in Midwestern kitchens. A lifelong resident of the Midwest, award-winning author Marcia Adams celebrates this diverse and bountiful region with more than 200 recipes that capture the spirit of Heartland cooking.

Heartland food conjures up delightfully nostalgic memories of pies cooling on a windowsill, silky preserves canned for the long cold winters, soft white sugar cookies bursting with raisins, generous breakfasts of farm-fresh eggs and country sausage, and hearty soups simmered to savory perfection. The region boasts unparalleled culinary diversity: tender Iowa lamb, Minnesota wild rice and salmon, Michigan morels and fiddlehead ferns, Wisconsin cheese and ducks -- the list goes on and on. And each generation of immigrants has preserved its cultural heritage in the form of a flourishing ethnic cuisine.

Adams has traveled throughout the Midwestern states in search of the very best recipes the region has to offer, from near-forgotten family favorites to the exciting new creations coming out of the Heartland's professional kitchens. She includes classics like Snicker-doodles, Wilted Country Salad with Bacon Dressing, and Stewing Hen with Cornmeal Parsley Dumplings; regional favorites like Cincinnati Chili and Frango Mint Cheesecake; plus a selection of innovative new dishes that make the most of indigenous Midwestern ingredients, such as Pork Pot Roast with Couscous and Sauteed Perch Fillets with Fresh Cucumber Relish.

With dozens of color photographs and Marcia Adams's warmly evocative text, Heartland presents an unforgettable portrait of the people, places, and food that, epitomize American regional cookery.

Best of St. Louis Cuisine 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I love this cookbook! I first stumbled upon it while looking for a St. Louis-y gift for some German friends of mine who love to cook. It has since become my favorite cookbook. Whenever I want to prepare a special dinner, all I need to do is look through it. I'm not a terribly experienced cook, but I have never had a dish not turn out from any of these recipes. It also gives a little bit of St. Louis culture, without innundating the reader. AND, I appreciate the added benefit of knowing proceeds go to the Junior League of St. Louis. This fluke purchase of mine has become a favorite in my kitchen and a favorite gift to give.

Another hit from my favorite culinary icon! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As a fellow native of Kansas City, I see Ms. Fertig's work everywhere- in newspapers, in bookstores, and on television. And like other Midwesterners, I admire her efforts to give our regional cooking the status it deserves. This book eliminates any doubts about the quality of Midwestern cooking. It has been a huge success locally, and the nationwide attention it is receiving is equally justified. Ms. Fertig mixes ethnic dishes such as Bratwurst with Caramelized Onion and Apples with modern classics like Vegetable Garden Pot Roast to yield a truly well-rounded image of the Midwestern culinary tradition. For those skeptics out there, one bite of the heavenly Blue Cheese and Toasted Pecan Spread will convert you! I've had the pleasure of attending some of Ms. Fertig's cooking classes, and her penchant for humor and storytelling are clearly reflected in her book. I strongly recommend it for any avid cooks who wish to get in touch with their roots. This is the epitome comfort food.

Editorial Review:

The food of the Midwest is the flavor of America itself, a marriage of tradition and innovation, comfort and creativity, abundence and thrift. in Prairie Home Cooking, Judith Fertig serves up a warmhearted invitation to savor the best flavors of America's breadbasket.

This is a cute little thing, but if you really want an extraordinary Wizard of Oz cookbook, you'd be better off finding 'Cooking in Oz' by Elaine Willingham and Steve Cox. Loads of pictures and celebrity recipes, info on L. Frank Baum, trivia and great stuff for all of us who love Oz and Baum.

A Neat Little Cookbook 3 out of 5 stars.

A neat little cookbook sure to please those who like to collect cookbooks or Oz. Easy to follow recipes named appropriately with the film in mind are studded with excepts from the film.

Editorial Review:

Inspired by the whimsical movie, The Wizard of Oz Cookbook begins with a brief stop in Kansas for some of Aunt Em's heartland breakfast fare and then soars over the rainbow to fantasy food in Oz--Emerald Castle Cake, Wicked Witch's Brew, and Yellow Brickle Brownies, to name a few. 20 illustrations.

Editorial Review:

This photography rich book is a love song for local food. Through narrating the stories of 31 Minnesota chefs and restaurants, the Minnesota Homegrown Cookbook offers 100 recipes that celebrate cooking with local, sustainably grown food. The passion of these chefs, and the farmers they work with, sings throughout the pages.

This cookbook combines rich traditions and delightful innovations. The mouth-watering fare of world-class bed-and-breakfasts is here, alongside the saucy mix of cultural cuisines from kitchens at the Twin Cities' Café Brenda, Spoon River, Lucia's, Heartland, and the delectable slow cooking of eateries like the New Scenic Café in Two Harbors and Minwanjige Café in Strawberry Lake. Mixing the familiar comfort food of Minnesota's roots in the culture of Northern Europe with the fine new flavors of world cuisine, these recipes comprise a travel guide through Minnesota, with illustrated profiles of chefs and farmers, of food and farms.

The Minnesota Homegrown Cookbook is the newest release from Renewing the Countryside (RTC), a Minnesota-based non-profit organization that champions the positive stories of rural revitalization. In additional to developing books, RTC produces educational programming around local foods and sustainable agriculture including the Local Food Hero radio show, the Healthy Local Foods exhibit at the State Fair's EcoExperience and Green Routes, a sustainable tourism initiative.
