Grade it: "Incomplete" 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a good book for baby boomers like myself to trip down memory lane. Or so I thought. I enjoyed the pictures. But I had several problems with this book. If we were in school I would have to grade it "incomplete". Some of the pictures do not indicate the location: the picture of the people lined up in front of the Hough Bakery after V-J; the two pictures of the Manner's on page 37; the old Lawson store that is pictured...and it goes on and on and on. Where were they located?

Many of her stories start off interesting then drop you and leave you hanging. She mentions that in the 1940s there were four Chandler & Rudd stores. Then she switches to Heinen's. What happened to Chandler & Rudd? There is an old ad for Fisher Foods but only a mere mention of Fazio's and no mention of Stop-N-Shop.

Many items that folks may remember get an one word mention like the Forum or Dearings, others are shown over and over again like Manners. Whatever happened to the Uncle Marty ice cream trucks? No mention of them. Some of the East Side barbeque joints of the 1950s and 60s like Whitmore's or Hot Sauce William's or Ferris'? No mention of them. Peterson Nuts. Yes. King's Nuts. No.

But the kisser is: there's a picture of Otto's Deli. And that's it. All of the places you could go and get a great corned beef sandwich? Hold on to the memory.

And don't look for them in this book.

Editorial Review:

Remember when food was local?

. . . when Cleveland companies made it, and local people sold it and ran the restaurants where we ate it?

Food makes powerful memories. Just mention Hough Bakeries and see how quickly we Clevelanders start to drool over just the thought of those long-lost white cakes. This book collects the fondest memories of fellow Clevelanders who all share an ache for treats from the past. There were Frostees in Higbees' basement. Popcorn balls at Euclid Beach. Burgers at Manners or Mawby's or Kenny King's. Entertainment-filled nights at Alpine Village. Mustard at old Municipal Stadium . . . and so much more. Look inside and rediscover some of your own favorite local flavors!

Cooking With Bess Truman 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is just a down-home cookbook that is hearty, delicious, and practical. The recipes are easy to follow, filled with mostly common ingredients, that are mixed together to create tasty new dishes. Warning: this is not a low-fat cookbook ... thank goodness! These are recipes we grew up on. This cookbook entertains the soul that we assoicate with homemade cooking and comfort food -- but without going too much over the top in terms of feeling guilty.

Editorial Review:

"Let's eat out!" Minnesotans have always loved to, in the opulent dining rooms of fancy hotels, in piney resort halls, or in standard around-the-corner cafes, where the food is hot and plentiful. And the best of these eateries inspire cherished memories of fabulous food and charming camaraderie. Minnesota Eats Out is a virtual romp through the state's dining spots, from early health resorts to Prohibition-era speakeasies to A&W drive-ins, illustrated with nearly one thousand photographs, postcards, menus, matchbooks, and collectible dishes. Kathryn Strand Koutsky and Linda Koutsky narrate the history of dining in the North Star State, highlighting innovative foods, inspired restaurant architecture, and cutting-edge graphic design, along with anecdotes about beloved restaurants remembered through the decades. Accompanying this rich history is a priceless collection of recipes for dishes made famous through the years, like the pioneers' Indian Pudding and old favorites from Eibner's Bakery in New Ulm or Ruttger's Resort in Brainerd. Eleanor Ostman revised these recipes for preparation in modern kitchens. Embellished with photographs of historic restaurants, collectible tableware, and restaurant ephemera, the recipes invite today's readers to re-create cherished food memories. Minnesota Eats Out, a one-of-a-kind venture into the state's history, serves up over a century of fine and fun Minnesota dining.

Editorial Review:

America is coming back to basics, and nowhere is the art of transforming fresh, seasonal ingredients into appealingly homey dishes practiced with more flair than in Midwestern kitchens. A lifelong resident of the Midwest, award-winning author Marcia Adams celebrates this diverse and bountiful region with more than 200 recipes that capture the spirit of Heartland cooking.

Heartland food conjures up delightfully nostalgic memories of pies cooling on a windowsill, silky preserves canned for the long cold winters, soft white sugar cookies bursting with raisins, generous breakfasts of farm-fresh eggs and country sausage, and hearty soups simmered to savory perfection. The region boasts unparalleled culinary diversity: tender Iowa lamb, Minnesota wild rice and salmon, Michigan morels and fiddlehead ferns, Wisconsin cheese and ducks -- the list goes on and on. And each generation of immigrants has preserved its cultural heritage in the form of a flourishing ethnic cuisine.

Adams has traveled throughout the Midwestern states in search of the very best recipes the region has to offer, from near-forgotten family favorites to the exciting new creations coming out of the Heartland's professional kitchens. She includes classics like Snicker-doodles, Wilted Country Salad with Bacon Dressing, and Stewing Hen with Cornmeal Parsley Dumplings; regional favorites like Cincinnati Chili and Frango Mint Cheesecake; plus a selection of innovative new dishes that make the most of indigenous Midwestern ingredients, such as Pork Pot Roast with Couscous and Sauteed Perch Fillets with Fresh Cucumber Relish.

With dozens of color photographs and Marcia Adams's warmly evocative text, Heartland presents an unforgettable portrait of the people, places, and food that, epitomize American regional cookery.

A surprisingly involved treasury of anecdotes concerning the history of cookbooks 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Pot Roast, Politics, and Ants in the Pantry: Missouri's Cookbook Heritage is not a cookbook per se - rather, it is a surprisingly involved treasury of anecdotes concerning the history of cookbooks and food preparation in Missouri, the Show Me State. From traditional "kitchen medicine", to household tips that have been passed down through the generations, to extensive cookbook collections preserved in libraries, historical societies, and the shelves of private individuals, to how the Internet has transformed modern-day recipe sharing, Pot Roast, Politics, and Ants in the Pantry is a thoroughly entertaining tour de force of how love of good Missouri cooking has been passed along through the generations.

Editorial Review:

This treasure trove of anecdotes and nuggets of historical information about cookery in the Show-Me State draws from more than 150 publications to reveal Missouri's cookbook heritage and to deliver a generous sampling of recipes. The Fishers scoured libraries and historical societies to find handwritten family recipe collections and mimeographed publications as well as glossy color editions. Cookbooks covered include such curiosities as the Julia Clark Household Memoranda Book from the William Clark papers, an 1880 production by the Ladies of St. Louis called My Mother's Cookbook, Mary Foote Henderson's Practical Cooking and Dinner Giving, and Albert E. Brumley's All-Day Singin' and Dinner on the Ground. Festival cookbooks, company cookbooks, even cookbooks tied to world events--they're all here in one delightful book and its extensive bibliography.

A unique and memorable collection 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Grandmothers Of Greenbush: Recipes And Memories Of The Old Greenbush Neighborhood 1900-1925 by Catherine Tripalin Murray is a blend of anecdotal history and recipes drawn from the women who lived on a 52-acre plate comprising ten blocks which formed a triangular shaped neighborhood called Greenbush, a Madison, Wisconsin ethnic community. A very nice touch is the inclusion of old b/w photographs of the women, along with a brief biographical description including their birthplace, parentage, siblings, spouse, wedding, and children, accompanied by an anecdotal story of their individual lives. This is paired up with these a recipe drawn from their particular culinary expertise. From Nonna Accardo's Bread; Mama C's Spaghetti Sauce and Meatballs; Salsa Fresca Di Pomidoro a La Puttancesca; and Conchera's Garlic Sauce; to Italian Roast Loin of Pork with Potatoes; Breaded Sirloin Steak; Ida's Delicious Noodle Pudding; and Grandma Urso's Round Steak, Grandmothers Of Greenbush is a unique and memorable collection, a truly fitting culinary tribute, and simply wonderful just browsing through.

Editorial Review:

Greenbush, the Madison, Wisconsin, neighborhood often referred to as "Little Italy" or affectionately as the "Bush," was a melting pot of many nationalities. Italians, Jews, African-Americans, Irish, Germans and others lived together in harmony, sharing the common bond of few possessions and an abundance of family love. Featured in this book are the stories of some of these remarkable women and the recipes that they prepared for family and friends.

Editorial Review:

If Ma and Pa Ingalls had expanded their Little House enough to welcome overnight guests, Judith M. Fertig's Prairie Home Cooking would be the cookbook most often featured on the bed and breakfast menu. There'd be a basket of Tom's Northern Plains Rhubarb Muffins, to be sure. And probably a St. Louis Gooey Butter Coffee Cake for those who just can't decide. Then Featherweight Whole Wheat Pancakes with Chokecherry Syrup, or Gingerbread Waffles with Pear Sauce, followed by a Hungarian Omelette, Tomato and Zucchini Scrambled Eggs, Herbed Sausage Patties, Swedish Potato Sausages, a side of fried Goetta, and coffee. And that, by golly, is only breakfast.

Once you get over to the Amish Frolic, you'll find Orange-Mint Thresher's Drink, Firehouse Tomatoes, Pickled Beets, Baked Macaroni and Cheddar, Scalloped Peaches-and-Cream Corn, Buttermilk-Oatmeal Bread, New Prague Meatloaf, Norwegian Potato Doughnuts, and Old-fashioned Chocolate Cakes with Boiled Frosting. And then there's supper to think about next.

Take the better part of Europe, heavy on the North and the Central, tip it up on one end, and sprinkle liberally across Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and Nebraska, let sit for 100 years of proud cooking, and 400 of the recipes that remain will be found in Prairie Home Cooking.

Anyone connected to a farm somewhere along the line will find this book comforting. Anyone with an abundant backyard garden will love this book for its relishes and canned goods. Anyone who ever wondered about the Midwest is in for a thorough education. And eating is only part of it. Fertig fills her pages with wonderful detail about the places and the people that have made up the American Midwest ever since the first plow broke through prairie sod.--Schuyler Ingle

Disappointed to find this is out of print! 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I checked this book out of my local library and enjoyed it so much (Laura's gingerbread recipe is especially good) that I wanted to purchase a copy for my personal cookbook collection. I hope it is reprinted soon! Different from "The Little House Cookbook" in that these are not necessarily recipes from Laura's "Little House" books, but rather recipes from her personal cookbook she complied as an adult living in Mansfield, MO. This book is illustrated with beautiful color photos of Laura and Almanzo's home in Missouri (inside and out) and would be a great addition to my cookbook collection. The recipes themselves have a simple, country flair and appear to be easy to prepare (only tried a few but I do love to read cookbooks!)

Lovely Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I, too, checked this out of the library and tried the gingerbread recipe. Made it for the second time today for a family dinner and everyone raved about it. It is a lovely book full of comments about each recipe and wonderful illustrations. My 9 year old loved looking at it too. Can't wait to try more recipes...a good variety with old-fashioned sensibility.

The Joy of Grocery Shopping 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As a frequent visitor to Chicago, I love to take advantage of a big city's resources. I found "A Cook's Guide to Chicago" to be an invaluable culinary guidebook. Written in a humorous and easy to read style, the book demystifies those strange foods I can't identify, and lists stores that carry the exotic foods I love but can't find in my own neighborhood. Better yet, the author offers tips and recipes that feature them. With this book, I'm armed with a resource that enables me to search out foods I didn't even know existed!

Each chapter is filled with interesting facts that make identifying and locating groceries and cooking utensils fun.
(The description of South Water Market made me want to shop there just to see the area.) The book's layout makes it simple to use, and it is thoroughly indexed. The graphic design is a visual treat.

But the best part about this book, for me, is not the facts, but the feeling it gave me while reading it. I fell in love with food and spices and cooking all over again. Suddenly, just going down the same aisle at my usual supermaket to make the same predictable meal just didn't cut it. With these newly defined foods and locations of ethnic grocery stores, I was ready for a culinary adventure. The author's skill in writing, her sense of humor and love of food all combine to portray cooking as a sensual and exotic world. "The Cook's Guide" is the perfect companion to explore that world - I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

The updated and expanded edition of the book that forever changed the way Chicagoans shop, cook, and eat.
