Editorial Review:

"A Midwest Gardener's Cookbook", the product of fifty years of cookery according to seasonal principles, contains recipes for 94 different fruits, vegetables, and herbs (including such wild crops as mulberries, pawpaws, and violets), locally grown and used at their peak of flavor and freshness. Take it with you as you stroll through the local farmer's market, or consult it after bringing in the harvest from your own garden. If it's spring and the mint is up, what could be more delicious than a yogurt-mint marinade for shish kebab, or a dish of minted citrus carrots?Under Summer, you'll find unusual and tasty ideas for everything from blueberries to zucchini. In Autumn, make Towne's easy and inexpensive Apple Coffee Cake, or stir up a batch of her mennonite-style apple butter. In the section for Winter, you'll find recipes for kale, leeks, and other winter vegetables, hints for growing herbs indoors, and much more. From the Preface - I grew up during the Great Depression on a farm in southeastern South Dakota where we had to rely for our 'daily bread' upon nature, hard work, and the help of relatives and friends, particularly after the death of our mother when I was not yet four years old. We ate primarily what we could raise ourselves and what others shared with us from their bounty. What was grown beyond our daily needs we preserved for future use, canning (and later freezing) up to four hundred quarts of food each year and storing other produce such as potatoes and squash in an unheated cellar.Wherever my family and I have lived since I married and left South Dakota, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana whether in city or town, we have always managed to have some kind of garden, even if only a postage stamp-size tomato patch in the backyard of a Chicago townhouse. This cookbook has been organized according to the growing seasons, from spring to winter, and alphabetically within each season those fruits, vegetables and herbs then in plentiful supply. For it is at that time that the home gardener (or careful shopper at farmers' markets) is able to secure the freshest, most nutritious, and least expensive produce. Whenever spinach is in season, for example, the home gardener needs to have close at hand (without looking in ten cookbooks) at least ten recipes for using spinach in a variety of ways so that one's family will not get bored with the vegetable before the season is past. When zucchini are abundant the gardener wants to make good us of his/her harvest and know of ways to preserve it for winter.

The Roux We Do 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful cookbook as well as a very interesting book of history back to the early 1800's and the Pony Express era. Recipes are awesome, some very easy to cook and some very challenging, but all ohh so good. My husband has even enjoyed experimenting with the recipes.
The most interesting part of this book is the side bars with great trivia, past and present regarding the Northwest Missouri area and its contribution to America's history. With items about the Pony Express, Jesse James, Eugene Field the poet, etc.
The French Toile (yellow and black) cover is very eye pleasing and looks great on the counter at home.
Can't say enough about this book - great to cook from and read.

An elegant compilation of superbly presented recipes 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

"License to Cook Minnesota Style," in the popular recipe-card file size stocking-stuffer format, is chockfull of the best recipes and notes about the best of Minnesota in the heart of the Midwest. The Wild Rice and Fish specialities included in this book are wonderful. Try a meal of Spinach-Wild Rice Quiche and Baked Stuffed Lake Superior Trout. Use the Gooseberry Jelly recipe on Finnish Flat Bread. The Meatball Soup is a great way to warm up on those chilly Midwestern days. And the Apple Cake with Rum Sauce is sure to have family and friends coming back for more! "License to Cook Minnesota Style" also includes information on the state history and a section titled "Marvelous Minnesota." This "land of lakes" has drawn many to its water for fishing, boating, and vacation fun. It is a valuable guide for anyone interested in touring Minnesota. This section includes information on state parks and public preserves, sporting on the Great Lakes, local dining, and much more. This little book is a must for tourists and chefs alike!

A Must for your Cookbook Collection! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

A wonderful array of recipes for cooks of all abilities!
The food styling and photography are beautiful as well as the cover. It could be a coffee-table book if you get it off your kitchen counter. I also enjoyed reading all the oil history and helpful hunts sprinkled among the pages.
Try the "Frangelico Fantasy Dessert", "T-Town Brisket" and "Curried Spinach and Apple Dip". Mmmmmm!

Editorial Review:

In the early 1920s, Tulsa was known as the "Oil Capital of the World," and people flocked to Tulsa by the thousands, lured by the hope of striking it rich with oil. These ambitious families brought their various traditions, legacies, and dreams, creating a culinary melting pot.

Tulsa may no longer be the "Oil Capital of the World," but in Oil & Vinegar we still celebrate its diverse culture and cuisine with stories about its history and a collection of recipes that are sure to help you strike it rich in your own kitchen.

Oil & Vinegar contains over 250 recipes, which were selected from over 2,000 submissions.

The beautiful cover art is by Otto Duecker, a nationally recognized artist who resides in Tulsa.

Variety and taste are hallmarks of Fare to Remember 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Fare to Remember offers a great variety of recipes -- everyday dishes and party items, every category from brunches to desserts, simple recipes for beginning cooks and challenging recipes for experienced cooks. You won't find the same humdrum ideas here. Each recipe comes from the personal collection of a member of Assistance League of St. Louis, and each one was triple-tested and refined before it was selected to be included.

I appreciate the fact that many of the recipes include nutritional calculations, and are marked with a special symbol indicating low fat and calories. Another special symbol indicates recipes that are quick and easy.

I serve recipes from Fare to Remember to all my guests, and the food always passes the ultimate test: my guests ask for the recipe and then ask where they can get the book.
