Editorial Review:

Authors Dan and Kathleen Taggart, Oregon-based food writers and culinary teachers, present in Northwest Food and Wine a collection of more than 120 often inspiring, yet sometimes flawed, appetizers, entrees, salads, and desserts, all intelligently arranged in chapters headed by a complementary grape type prominent in the making of Pacific Northwest wines (including, as they'll tell you repeatedly, as if apologizing for precluding it from the title, Idaho). It's a great idea for a book; the Northwest's bountiful seafood, produce, and wine-growing regions provide fodder and imaginative spark to any cook partial to fresh ingredients, be it mussels, Merlot, or mizuna.

Despite some problems in proofreading and layout, this book is capable of sparking the spark. A Sun-Dried Tomato Tapenade, with hints of cayenne and anchovy, adds a surprising level of complexity to a lush and grapey Pinot Gris. Likewise, Sautéed Goat Cheese on Greens with Caper Dressing provokes awe in how well it partners with a recommended Cabernet. Yet these two great recipes are printed on opposite sides of the same page--a small concern, unless you're the one whisking with one hand and adjusting the cookbook holder with the other. It's also easy to dismiss spelling errors or typos, but when, in the "Pinot Noir" chapter, the instructions for the tasty Penne with Caramelized Walla Walla Onions omit adding the onions to the finished dish, you may find yourself running to the pages that feature dishes so simple they can only charitably be called "recipes." "Cracked Whole Fresh Dungeness Crab" asks for two cooked Dungeness crabs, a baguette, and some butter; similarly, "Dill-Coated Grilled Pork Tenderloin" gets two pages for a method consisting primarily of "Roll oiled pork tenderloin in chopped fresh dill. Grill."

Consequently, this book requires vigilance and selective skimming. A Riesling-friendly Spicy Corn Relish is so good and so versatile you'll want to make it to accompany more than the suggested crab cakes; but the Red Wine Butter Sauce--four cups of Cabernet Sauvignon and four cups chicken stock reduced to two cups before adding two entire sticks of butter--lards over the dish with all the grace of a Sumo wrestler perched in a plum tree. Cookbooks are the ultimate trust exercise--two clunkers in a row and you never pick up the book again. But despite the occasional misfire, the judicious chef and enophile looking for casually elegant food and wine pairings will find rewards in Northwest Food and Wine. --Tony Mason

My husband and I just ate a lovely lunch at a friend's home on the river here in our beautiful little valley. As not a crumb was left on our plate, I inquired ... the recipe was from this wonderful book, which my friend showed me. I shall be ordering one now. Thank you.

Delicious 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a 'must' cookbook for serious chefs 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The most interesting thing about IN SEASON is the author's personal tales relative to each of the principal ingredients about which he writes. It is more than a cookbook, it is fascinating personal epoch which draws you in and keeps your interest, all the while giving good advice and recipes about Northwest products.

Editorial Review:

Cooking, like travel, is one of life's great adventures. Join Greg Atkinson, one of the Pacific Northwest's most heralded young chefs, on a gastonomic journey through the seasons as he explores the importance of good food in our everyday lives.

Every recipe I've tried has been stellar! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I can't say enough nice things about this slim littlecookbook. First, every recipe I've tried has been stellar -- and I'veused the recipes with several dinner parties to rave reviews. Second, I appreciate the organization. Sarich classifies every recipe by seasonability of ingredents, cost of ingredients, and time needed for preparation...very helpful features that I wish more cookbooks shared. Third, I like the lay-flat spiral binding, which makes it handy to use. Fourth, the presentation and photography are beautiful. Interestingly, I've bragged up book to several out-of-town guests, and they've purchased the book (even though they don't live in the Pacific Northwest). Additionally, the indices at the back of the book include wine and food/herbs/spices pairing, wine descriptions, and useful lists of ingredients to have on hand depending on what type of cuisine you tend to cook.

Editorial Review:

This best-selling cookbook from the culinary director of Chateau Ste. Michelle showcases 88 creative recipes that celebrate the bounty of fresh ingredients and versatile cuisine through the seasons in the Pacific Northwest. Other features include a guide to food and wine pairing, tips on the well-equipped kitchen, and color photography throughout.

Info on B & B's, scrumptious recipes, artistically presented 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book contains illustrations, descriptions, and 11 specific items of information about 85 different Bed and Breakfast Country Inns in the state of Washington plus their most requested or favorite recipes. I especially liked one simply called "Bubble Bread" which included nuts, brown sugar, butterscotch pudding mix, and cinnamon in the ingredients!! The book lies flat when opened, has a beautiful hard cover, and is attractively printed in two colors. The authors also thoughtfully included tables of oven temperature equivalents, baking pan sizes, liquid and dry measures (including metric conversions), and high altitude adjustment suggestions. A special feature appearing throughout the book is entitled "Carol's Corner" where one of the authors records hints and happenings which developed during the testing of all recipes submitted. Tantalizing titles of some of the recipes are Banana Blueberry Muffins, Northwest Salmon Pie, Santa Cruz Sweet and Sour Zucchini Salad, Apple Breakfast Lasagna, Comeback Hash, and Paula's Easy Decadent Chocolate Trifle. You'll love the book for yourself and it would make a much-appreciated gift.

Though some of these recipes are a little out there, most of them are simply delectable. The book provides a great feel for the flavor (pardon the pun) of the region and some wonderful recipes.
