deep in the heart of Tex-Mex 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Being from San Antonio - I was a little sceptical when I checked this out from the library. I don't know about 'Nuevo' as a trend, but the book is a delight and I hadn't had it home for more than an hour or so before I was on Amazon ordering a copy. It is fun to read and fun to cook from and the whole layout of the book is a delight with fine color photographs.

Editorial Review:

Nuevo Tex-Mex cooking, the hottest new trend in Nuevo Latino cuisine, embraces and celebrates both its zesty Latin American flavors and no-nonsense Texas personality. This is hearty food for real people, people who are not afraid to drink a beer (or a shot of tequila) with a meal (even if it's breakfast) and get their hands a little messy. It's food that knows how to have fun without rolling in heavy ingredients. In Nuevo Tex-Mex, Texan chef David Garrido's hip and innovative recipes are presented by Texan food writer Robb Walsh with lots of humor and attitude, all photographed in vivid color and spectacular style by Texan photographer Manny Rodriguez. Even the book's designer is from Texas! This is absolutely the best thing to come along since ice cold beer, tortilla chips, and guacamole.

great meal ideas and recipes 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love Greg Atkinson's writing style and his approach to food. Simple, innovative and comforting. His prose and life anecdotes are wonderful.
The recipes range from simple to sophisticated, but are eminently doable.
The stories that accompany each menu really set the scene.

Editorial Review:

This colorful cookbook captures the contemporary Northwest lifestyle with an array of thematic menus: sophisticated beach picnics, a spring meal to celebrate the return of the salmon, brunch aboard the cabin cruiser (just as delectable on land). Greg Atkinson’s uninhibited love of life and food shine through as he describes high tea in the garden or a dinner that draws luscious offerings from the Pike Place Market. The 14 menus capture the very essence of the statement, "Life is good." And how can it not be with fresh Kumamoto oysters from Puget Sound, or Copper River salmon from Alaska, or herbed and grilled leg of lamb? Each special menu consists of five to seven recipes that, served together, comprise a memorable culinary event. For example, Atkinson's menu for a romantic summer dinner includes "Matisse Bread" or Fougasse, Three Shellfish with Three Citrus Fruits, Provençale Chicken with Tomato and Orange, and Chocolate Marquis with Saffron Cream.

Easy and Elegant! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Simple, elegant recipes that make a stunning meal. The herb baked salmon, asparagus linguine, and black mussel linguine were absolutely wonderful. Each dish had clear instructions and only required a few good ingredients.

A Great Northwest Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I recently got given this book, and I can see myself making most of the recipes in it as the first 3 have all been so successful. Great variety of recipes, good layout and directions, and the added bonus of a list of great Northwest Restaurant to try out when you don't fancy cooking!

Great for elite foodies, not so much for simple cooks 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I like reading this book, a lot, and developing inspiration for dishes I'd like to prepare. As a resident of the Pacific Northwest, a lot of these dishes and their ingredients are readily available. However, I find that many of these recipes are just too out of reach for your standard American.

If you're someone who has visited many of these inns and restaurants and thought, "A ha! I can finally recreate recipe X!" then this is the book for you. I, however, was just looking for a cookbook that highlights our local cuisine but isn't too complicated. I got one, but not both.

Practical step-by-step elegance! A must have! 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

This cookbook may look intimidating, but it's not! Great flavor and practicality that even the novice could learn. Dive in and your hooked on Caprial's style! I give this book as gifts and put sticky notes w/ my suggestions. I have about 25 cookbooks and this one is a favorite.

You'd better already know how to cook! 4 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

The recipes in this book are flavorful and imaginative and for that reason one can overlook the lack of specific direction or omitted steps that appear on nearly every page. That is, of course, unless you are a beginning or inexperienced cook. Watch out, for instance, that in the recipe for Pissaladiere, that you must add the proofed yeast into the flour, and that you must proof the dough again for 20 minutes or so before adding the topping. The topping calls for "10 whole shallots". Shallots have a tremendous range in size. What size or weight should we use? This book is definitely for someone who can call on their own cooking expertise to make up for the lack of specific information.

Editorial Review:

Pence, author of "Cooking with Caprial" and "Caprial's Bistro Favorites, " is back with more easy, delicious bistro-style dishes from her latest television series. Known for her winning style and ability to demystify the basics of fine cooking, her talents shine in this collection of 130 starters, entrees, and desserts. Illustrations.

Great Gift for Gourmets! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This cook book is informative, useful, and inspiring. The recipes are yummy and well worth the effort. Be sure to try the Walnut Torte with Chocolate Glaze!

The book is divided into regions of Washington State, with an interesting narrative about each region in each section. There are historic photos, too, so Wandering and Feasting is a book to read, in addition to cook book as reference.

The presentation is crisp and appealing.

A great gift for gourmets, people who cook, NWophiles, and those who like to eat others' good cooking!

I am smitten 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I am not a cook, but after reviewing this book, i really want to be, not to mention that the recipes left me salivating. It may not be a book for the complete beginner but with some enthusiasm, the recipes in this book are very do-able. The side essays written by kathy casey are funny and informative and both authors clearly try to make the recipes understandable and do-able for the home kitchen. I am smitten with my kitchen and the tasty treats i can make in it. Thanks to Kathy Casey and Cynthia Nims for their tempting inspirations!

Editorial Review:

In this definitive cookbook, Ronni Lundy draws upon her Kentucky mountain roots and on the recipes and food passions of the fellow Southerners--from home cooks to a new generation of professional chefs--she has met in her extensive regional travels. Lundy cooks her way through the bounty of the Southern garden, from succulent purple speckled butter beans and lady cream peas to corn and greens, muscadines, Georgia peaches, figs, mayhaws, and watermelon. Her mouthwatering recipes include Crawfish Corn Cakes with Smoked Tomato Sauce, Warm Green Bean and Tommy-Toe Salad, Watermelon Salsa, Blackberry Cobbler, and Bourbon-Apricot-Cherry Stack Cake. She visits farm markets and festivals, finds heirloom-seed growers, and provides mail-order sources for everything from sweet-potato chips and old-fashioned whole heart grits to fiery-orange Honey Bells. Butter Beans to Blackberries is also a great guide for food-conscious visitors to a South that is rediscovering its culinary heritage.
