I am enjoying the recipes in this cookbook for healthier eating even though I'm not a diabetic. They are still flavorful and tasty. I think anyone could benefit from these recipes to have better eating habits.

Just Like Home 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent resource for the novice.

I do not have a lot of time to read a lot of recipes just to get a good soul meal but this book is truly God sent.

If you need a meal without all of the fuss this book is for you.

The Lost Ark Of Scratch Cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The Title said it right. Scratch cooking is becoming a lost ark. There are so many ways that are quick, easy, or instant, but not alway the best. To me, food taste better when it made from scratch, even if it take more time and effort to prepare the meal. Compare this book from others that are quick and easy and you will see, nothing beat cooking from scratch.

THE LOST ART OF SCRATCH OF COOKING 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

THIS BOOK WAS SO DISAPPOINTING. THE REVIEWS INDICATED A CHARMING WAY TO SEE HOW TO COOK IN A WONDERFUL OLD ART OF COOKING. HAD I SAW THIS AT A CHURCH BAZZAR I WOULD HAVE PAID FAR LESS AND GIVEN IT TO A CHILD TO LEARN THE BASIS OF COOKING. IN TODAYS MARKET FOR THE PRICE PAID, IT SHOULD HAVE HAD MORE DETAILS ON THE FAMILY TRADITIONS, PHOTOS AND SOME ZIP THAT MADE YOU EAGER TO COOK SOMETHING INCLUDED IN THE BOOK.
I AM A COLLECTOR OF COOKBOOKS, PERHAPS NOW IN EXCESS OF 200+ AND WOULD RATE THIS BOOK AS A MINUS 1. I DID APPRECIATE THE BIBLICAL VERUS IN THE BOOK.

Editorial Review:

When Joyce White moved to New York City from Alabama, she left small-town life behind and landed ajob as a food editor at a major women's magazine. Weekends, however, found her visiting churches in Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvestant, looking for a taste of home. Food has long been a part of the spiritual life of African-American churches, and what she found there, along with what she missed from home, was the comforting blend of cooking and fellowship that feeds both the body and soul.

In this warm and joyful collection, White offers more than 150 recipes for the foods that worshipers look forward to after services, and she captures the spirit of these sociable meals with warm, conversational and occasionally poignant reflections from African-American churchgoers around the United States.

"We don't just come to church service and leave," says a retired nurse who directs hospitality for a large church in Los Angeles. "Many of us stay here half the day. That way we get a chance to rub shoulders and see what is going on or going wrong with each other."

From delicious renditions of classics such as Sugar-Crusted Biscuits to updated favorites such as Black Beans with Sun-Dried Tomatoes, as well as special fare for entertaining and Kwaanza, the pages of Soul Food are alive with the spirit and love of African-American churches -- and the terrific food to be found there.

Dad's favorite cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 23 people found this review helpful.

My step dad is a retired chef who cooked for 20 years at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. He grew up in Kansas City and knew the Gates family and Mr. Bryant through school and his music career in a famous African-American singing group in the 1940's and 50's. Last night I was discussing my search for new BBQ sauces and mentioned a couple of cookbooks I had obtained. I was surprised when he admitted he hadn't always been a BBQ master chef. Because of the people he was raised around I figured he just always knew the secret of how to BBQ. Dad read me six cookbook titles that he had never shown me or told me about, even though over a ten year period he gave me the recipe for his "secret sauce" little by little. The cookbook he said to get first is The Ebony Cookbook, by Freda DeKnight. He read me the ingredients for BBQ sauces 1-4 and I knew right then why I had to get this book first.

My step dad knows BBQ like few others, and he can cook anything you name to perfection. If he said to get this book first well that's good enough for me. I don't need pretty pictures, I want to learn more about good Q and I'm confident this is the place to start.

By the way Dad sang with the Ink Spots and by mentioning his name and our family relationship, Winnie Gates, at the 12th and Brooklyn Gates' BBQ, treated my wife and I like visiting royalty when we passed through KC in 1974. We were served drinks in her office and she comped our ribs! So please feel confident in Dad's view that this book is the place to begin a serious study of BBQ. He said there are lots of other valuable recipes as well.

Editorial Review:

From Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church, one of the most esteemed centers of African American spirituality in the country, comes Food for the Soul–a compilation of more than one hundred recipes, and the many stories behind them shared by its congregation. Since its founding in 1808, Abyssinian has been a major social and religious voice of black Americans. The oldest African American church in New York State, it is a cultural melting-pot ministry with members from throughout the African diaspora–and a history of cooking reflecting that diversity.

Yet beyond the great recipes for dishes such as Bahamian Seafood Cobbler, Soulful Chicken Stir-Fry, Whipping Cream Biscuits, and Mama Georgia’s Sweet Potato Pie lies a rich and textured account of how the church incorporates the creation and enjoyment of food and the care of the physical body into its love for and devotion to God and humankind. Brimming with updated, healthy renditions of favorite old dishes, Food for the Soul is also illustrated throughout with beautiful photographs.

Woven through the book are stories associated with the recipes that are full of life–humorous, moving, joyful. From a churchgoer who started making spicy chili in the sixties as the South Bronx burned (Chef J’s 5-Alarm South Bronx Chili) to another who still re-creates the one-pot dinner that was the only meat dish her large and poor family could afford each week (Booba’s Saturday Night Special One-Pot Meal), these anecdotes and recipes come from the heart and provide deep sustenance to the body and soul.

The Abyssinian Baptist Church is the second oldest African American church in the United States and will celebrate its two hundredth anniversary in 2008. Abyssinian has members from Kenya, Jamaica, the United States, Ireland, Brazil, the Cameroon, Uganda, Ghana, the Bahamas, Cuba, Honduras, Panama, England, Egypt, South Africa, Grenada, Trinidad, Holland, Japan, and Nigeria.

From the HOT pink cover to the recipes that literally make your mouth water, this book is a joy! Many of the recipes are named after someone, and sound so deliciously REAL that you imagine yourself watching them cook and wishing you could sit down with them to sample the dish. Wonderful illustrations by Benny Andrews.....Let's Eat!

It's a great book. I like the fact that it's broked down into seasons and the receipes are easy to follow. The Cuban port receipe is wonderful! I love that it also has nice art work.

An Extraordinary Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

Harlem Really Cooks is more than a cookbook. It's a sharing of stories at a family reunion, a visit to an art gallery, it's experiencing Harlem, Africa or the Caribbean, without leaving home. I love this book and give it the highest recommendation.

Editorial Review:

Classic soul food recipes are honored, but with new spices, new flavors, and simpler techniques. Harlem Really Cooks combines art, history, photographs, personal anecdotes, and nostalgia. A portrait of the new Harlem, as seen through the eyes of a life-long resident and expert home cook.
