Editorial Review:

Soul food embodies the best of American cooking-it's tasty, homegrown, and redolent of the country's multiethnic history. In New Soul Cooking, the Food Network's Tanya Holland redefines this much-loved cuisine, introducing fresh and healthy ingredients, modern cooking styles, and global flavors.

From Africa to the Caribbean, Brazil, and the American South, Holland shows how African flavors fused with existing cooking traditions created the basis for soul food. She combines this now traditional style with fresh flavor combinations and cooking techniques, to create soul food cooking for a new generation of home cooks and chefs.

The 90 delicious creations in New Soul Cooking-from Black-eyed Pea and Country Ham Chowder to Pecan-Crusted Boneless Chicken Breasts and Confetti Cornbread-reinvigorate the concept of soul food. Luscious color photographs of many of these dishes introduce new presentation ideas, reinforcing Holland's belief that a color palette is as important as a wonderful flavor palate.

A diferent approach to Americas ventre in food. 3 out of 5 stars.

This small book is charming and informative about our connection to food in our culture. This is Ms. Shapiro's journey through South Florida and her culinary experieces. Obviously she has done a great deal of research on the subject and has presented it in a different and unique way. Well worth having in your collection of book on foods.

What shines most is Ms. Shapiro's commitment 4 out of 5 stars.

Reminiscent of the likes of a Ken Kesey magical bus trip, only without the psychotropic drugs, Ms.Shapiro's mind was instead absorbed in seeking out the next celebration of south Florida food and it's historic cultural story. I found this slim, little journal to be a fun exploration of the limitless possibilities one can experience if only you really just looked around you. "The saladettes in the wrapper bowl was born because I had to eat out at the local Publix supermarket." see page 27. This collection of historic fun facts and recipes (uncovered by Ms. Shapiro's relentless research and hands-on experiences)is destined to be a classic as it is a delightful breath of fresh air and combines tales of her research travels and the recipes she "un-earthed". It will inspire you to not just look at south Florida, but to also seek out it's delicious smells in some of the most interesting and unique places.

Editorial Review:

A South Florida Culinary Adventure is a most daring cookbook. This book has history, culture and ambience, and is one woman's journey through South Florida where she experiences and shares different culinary pleasures. From food quiz to famous quatations, from prison to the White House, you'll love the culture of food portrayed. Well-researched, with interesting old photographs, the menus and recipes are easy and simple. This unique book will excite women on the go and is a must-have for the scrupulous foodie's collection. "A great cookbook! Original and fun to read." - Patty Gonzalez, homemaker and office manager.

Editorial Review:

Subtitled More Recipes from the Americas' Family Kitchen, Vertamae Grosvenor's Vertamae Cooks Again is a companion cookbook to the author's public television show of the same name. It's an exploration, if you will, of pan-American comfort food.

"You can grow up," Grosvenor relates, "leave your home, travel far, change your walk, your talk, your name, but you--your people, your roots--will always be known by the language you cry in. That's the language of home.... I think that the natural truth is: That home language is about food." This, then, is a book of home food from all over the Americas, a lot of it old and traditional, some of it new, a mixing of cultural influences. To a traditional black-eyed pea soup from Nassau, for example, there's the addition of potato gnocchi. The original soup Grosvenor tasted featured dumplings. The gnocchi, like the coconut milk in the recipe, are her own additions. And such is the freewheeling style of this book, touching down here and there for a taste of this and that, all of it a rich mix redolent of someone's home cooking somewhere.

Vertamae Cooks Again is divided into soups, salads, side dishes and breads, entrees, and desserts and beverages. Recipes include the likes of Carolina Minestrone (rice instead of pasta), Afro-Mexican Radish Salad, Grilled Tuna and Vegetable Salad, Haitian Red Beans and Rice, Corn on the Cob with Chili Butter, Baked Jerked Chicken, Roast Chicken with Banana Stuffing, Pozole, Griot, Vegetable Pot Pies with Mashed Potato Crust, Applesauce Cake, and Tres Leche (Three Milk Cake).

Hit the road with Vertamae and you may find yourself traveling back home to the foods that feel good. --Schuyler Ingle

Feed your soul, heart, and body with this book. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a delightful and fun book. It is much more than a "cookbook". You can have your spirituality enhanced while making a great tasting meal. I love that the recipes have variations and options listed, so if I don't have the exact ingredients the book will give me some substitutes. I can vouch for the vegetarian recipes in the book. The recipes have notes listed under the title of the recipe which range from quick tips, to origins of the recipe or ingerdients, to nutritional information. Ther are menu listings to combine recipes. There are many tips on cooking, making the most of your time in the kitchen and preparation tips. I was going to list my favorites - but there are so many that I enjoy. Spicy Red and Black Bean Tortilla Pie, Steamed Kale with Spicy Peanut Sauce, Anasazi Beans, Pasta with Fresh Tomato, Basil and Leeks. The index is great and makes it easy to find recipes for example to use the rest of the tomatoes I had left from the pasta dish. The spirituality joy of this book comes in the sidebars by every recipe. As you wait for something to cook you can contemplate the mysteries and joys of life. This is a book to feed your heart, body and soul.

Editorial Review:

Feed Your Soul is a celebration of the simple art of cooking that goes beyond the realm of the traditional cookbook. Focusing on fresh whole foods and delectable low-fat, healthful dishes from around the world, it serves up daily reflections and meditations that will inspire and enlighten you. This fresh, imaginative and unpretentious approach to cooking and eating celebrates our connection to the earth with such delicious recipes as:
-- Spicy Red and Black Bean Tortilla Pie
-- Szechuan Stir-Fry with Fresh Asparagus and Sweet Gold Pepper
-- Blue Corn-Pecan Pancakes with Cranberry-Maple Sauce
-- Calypso Soup
-- Whole Grain Macaroni and Cheese with Mushrooms, Broccoli and Red Bell Peppers

For authors George Fowler and Jeff Lehr, the kitchen is a place where we can become more aware of ourselves and the world around us, where we can nourish ourselves and others, both in body and in spirit.

Great soul food without the guilt! 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this cookbook 3 years ago, just on a whim. To my suprise, it's been one of the best investments I've ever made. My family loves the recipes! They remind me of the meals my grandmother used to make. Wonderful collard greens, cooked with smoked turkey wings, instead of hamhocks or salt pork; tasty oven-fried chicken breasts; mouthwatering barbecue chicken; and an array of great dessert recipes. The recipes are easy, and the nutritional information lets you know you're eating healthy. This is one book in my collection that never has time to get dusty.

Editorial Review:

As a shared meal nourishes the body, so a quilt, passed from generation to generation, warms and nourishes the spirit. Both recipes and quilts preserve the culture and history of a people and their social, historic, and artistic connections to their past and their future. Celebrating both these traditions, The Black Family Dinner Quilt offers recipes based on both traditional and contemporary African-American cuisine with recipes full of down-home flavor but lower in fat, salt, and sugar. Southern Ham and Shrimp Soup, Country Chicken and Biscuits, Jamaican Pork, Creole Beans and Rice, Creamy Macaroni and Cheese, and even Bethune Sweet Potato Pie are just a few of the healthful and soul-satisfying dishes you'll find in these pages.
