Amazing 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I chose this cookbook based on reviews and WOW! My family has loved every recipe we've tried...corn pudding, pineapple/pecan upside down cake, shortning bread fried "chicken," "fish" sandwiches, apple cobbler. This is probably the best cookbook I've found in a long, long time. Fabulous food, fun, chatty style. Really innovative (I've never seen vegetarian versions of Southern food). I thought people were exaggerating when they said non-vegetarians loved certain of these dishes (yeah, not in my family, I thought) but I watched with astonishment as my husband polished off every last tofu "steak" on the platter, oblivious to the fact the rest of us wanted more--this is just not like him!

It's hardly the healthiest cookbook available--many things are fried or have tons of oil, like much traditional Southern cooking, but I've found I can reduce the fat/oil without any problems in the results (ie, The cobbler called for 2 cups of margarine (yeah, really!) but I only used 1/2 cup and it was still fabulous. Most (or all?) of the recipes are vegan. I'm not vegan, so sometimes I substitute eggs or milk, but I've also learned about new alternatives which has been fun. I adore this cookbook. Now I'm just afraid I'll never find another one I like as well!

Editorial Review:

For a taste of life in the south, this cookbook captures all the hominess of Southern cuisine with a dose of healthful eating in recipes that are vegetarian versions of standard favorites. Included are the sumptuous vegetable and fruit dishes and baked goods that have graced Southern tables for ages. Plus recipes handed down through generations showcasing other well loved combinations of favorite foods: tomatoes and green beans, biscuits and piping gravy, watermelon and pecan pies. You'll go back to a time and place where the pace is slow and friendly, close to the earth, and full of good food.

Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a truly wonderful cookbook. It looks beautiful, is laid out well, and most importantly, has lots of terrific recipes. The recipes are not difficult, the ingredients are generally easy to find, and yet they all have that special flare that great southern cooks are known for. I'm buying a second copy to give to my sister-in-law. It is a great addition to your cookbooks and makes a great gift.

Wow! This book is beautiful! 5 out of 5 stars.

This new River Road Recipes is absolutely beautiful! The pictures are gorgeous and the text reads like a Louisiana traveloge. The recipes are new and current but still reflect the types of food people like to eat in Louisiana. Not the same old gumbo recipes but no weird ingredients you have to look up either. We are loving it.

Editorial Review:

The exquisite menu at The Old Post Office Restaurant on Edisto Island, SC, has garnered this one-of-a-kind establishment legions of fans from around the country. It has been written up in the New York Times, Travel and Leisure, USA Today, Wine Spectator and Gourmet.

This exciting new cookbook is part of the Roadfood Cookbook Series by Jane and Michael Stern, two of the most popular and successful food writers in America. Like a visit to this historic Southern island (less than an hour from Charleston), Lowcountry Cooking from The Old Post Office Restaurant contains more than 150 favorite recipes for Southern dishes with a classical twist, such as Fussed-Over Pork Chop, P.B.'s Ultimate Filet Mignon, Coca Cola Cake, and Key Lime Mousse. It includes an 8-page color insert.

Chef Philip Bardin says, "Breads and desserts are prepared daily and all of the produce and seafood are local and the freshest available in the area. Our stone-ground grits - milled to our specifications - have been a specialty since 1988."

Previous Roadfood cookbooks include: Blue Willow Inn Cookbook (1-55853-991-3), El Charo Cookbook (1-55853-992-1), Durgin-Park Cookbook (1-4016-0028-X), Harry Carey's Cookbook (1-4016-0095-6), Louie's Backyard Cookbook (1-4016-0038-7), Carbone's Cookbook (1-4016-0122-7), and The Famous Dutch Kitchen Restaurant Cookbook (1-4016-0138-3).

A good Southern Restaurant book. 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a good overall book, for those who want to cook Magnolia's Lowcountry inspired Southern style foods, and those who want to have a selection of Donald Barickman's "Southern style" recipes that are generally easy to cook.

Start with crab cakes with panko crust, cleverly formed in long tubes within plastic wrap, then cut to create a more compact crab cake. The recipe is basic, not "messed up" with superfluous ingredients that mask the sweetness of blue crab, lightly skillet sauteed.

There's plenty of "comon" recipes, such as macaroni and cheddar cheese, , creamed corn, collard greens, okra, Hoppin' John, black beans and rice, and creamy grits slow cooked in water and heavy cream. To dress things up, there's Pimientto cheese grits with seared scallops shrimp, tasso and grits, or salmon over grits, and even lobster and grits. Things get an Asian/Latin twist with Coriander-seared tuna with jalapeno and mango vinaigrette and sauteed escarole. Barickman also offers squash blossosms stuffed with scallop and loubster moussse, or a steak topped with pimiento cheese and madeira sauce.

I was mildly disappoined that this lacked the "kick" in its selection of recipes to get it up to a 5 star rating, however with it's simple to moderately complex Southern recipes, good color photos, and almost too brief instructions, it will be more than sufficient for a lover of Charleston's Magnolias Restaurant to duplicate many of the older recipes. I do favor "chattier" cookbooks that give a local flavor in the side notes; this is "just the facts, ma'am" on its recipes. Authors John Martin Taylor, Edna Lewis, James Villas, the Lee Bros., and Frank Stitts have classic cookbooks books that clearly rate "5"'s in my opinion, check these out and see what you prefer to buy.

This version is said to be the original 1995 book, Magnolia's Southern Cuisine, from over 10 years ago, it was updated in 2006 with 50 or so new recipes.

Visit Charleston, and try this and several dozen excellent restaurants, to sample many variations of classics such shrimp and grits, fluffy biscuits, and all around great food!

Editorial Review:

Donald Barickman brings his contemporary take on Southern flavors to the table at Magnolia's Restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina. Following up his successful first book, Magnolia's Southern Cuisine, Barickman offers this new, expanded edition and long-awaited sequel, bringing forth over fifty new mouth-watering recipes while retaining many of the most popular originals.

Editorial Review:

If you think Chesapeake Bay cooking is all about the hard- or soft-shelled blue crab--about crab cakes, deviled crab, crab soufflés, crab-stuffed mushroom caps, ham and crab imperial, crabmeat curry, crab fluffs, crab and artichoke dip, crab loaf, crab quiche, and soft-shell crab sandwiches--you have another think coming. This isn't to say that the first 60 or so pages of Chesapeake Bay Cooking aren't dedicated to the blue crab. They are. But then John Shields moves right into oysters, then seafood, soups and stews, chicken and game birds, meat and game, and on all the way to desserts, pickles, and preserves.

Companion to a public television series, Chesapeake Bay Cooking is part travelogue, part history of a region's cooking, part call to environmentalist arms, part paean to childhood past, and part plain old cookbook devoted to the food products and cooking styles indigenous to the Chesapeake Bay.

In one sense, this is what has become of American cooking from the earliest times (Jamestown) to the most recent. Everyone passing through has had an impact on what the Native Americans started. Recipes range from Baltimore Polish and Italian influences to Virginia African American. While some professional chefs of the region are represented, the food for the most part is what's to be found at home, in the back yard, in the church basement. John Shields, Chesapeake Bay homeboy, gives this valuable piece of American real estate both a face and a flavor. --Schuyler Ingle

Southern Like Grandmother Made 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Being Southern born, when I first picked up this book I went looking for things that Grandmother used to cook.

In the first few pages I found "Hot-Water Cornbread." Yup! The recipe was right on. To be sure, Grandmother used yellow cornmeal rather than white, but that's OK. And in the recipe says "stir until the batter is the consistency of grits." -- That's southern.

Speaking of grits, there are six different dishes cooked with grits. I've only cooked four of those so far. (For you yankees, grits is polenta.) One recipe was not so good, it called for quick cooking grits. No self-respecting southerner would use quick grits. Instead get some good stone ground yellow grits. (Google will give you a lot of choices when you search for "stone ground grits." I've not tried them all, but all that I've tried have been good.)

This book is a collection of recipes from Southern Living magazine. They take a pretty wide interpretation of southern including gumbo from Louisiana, some Texas/western dishes, and even some Mexican.

As an annual book, this one contains a selection of recipes that were well received by the readers and by the magazine staff. It's a great book.

Editorial Review:

For connoisseurs of fine cooking, this annual collection is a "must have." The 26th volume in this legendary series includes every recipe from the past year, indexed for quick reference. Beautiful photography, step-by-step instructions, plus special cooking tips and secrets straight from the Southern Living Test Kitchens make each dish a triumph.

Country Baking is one of the best Gooseberry Patch cookbooks on the market- especially if you love to bake. I particularly love the recipe for pumpkin biscuits and ginger molasses biscuits. The Farmhouse buttermilk bread is also excellent.

For those who aren't familiar with Gooseberry Patch, each book is filled with great recipes and cute pencil illustrations. Add this one to your collection!
