for the grass enthousiast 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book has excellent detailed drawings of the whole plant, and the bloom or seed head. The descriptions of the grasses are thorough and include fair-excellent ratings on wildlife and or cattle grazing. For a native grass enthousiast or a rancher, this book is excellent.

Many grasses have similar visual attributes, though. For the average person who has no previous knowledge of grasses and no alternate source with actual photos, this resource could be confusing by itself.

GRASSES AND HOW TO IDENTIFY THEM 5 out of 5 stars.

Randy Wayne White's Sanibel Island Cookbook 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

For reader's of White's Doc Ford novels, the cookbook provides more than recipes. There is a photo and text account of the Dinkins Bay Marina which once occupied the site of today's Tarpon Bay rental dock on Sanibel Island. As readers know, Doc Ford lives at Dinkins Bay Marina. Although Tarpon Bay is now part of the Ding Darling Wildlife Preserve on Sanibel, old-timers tell me it once was as White and Doc Ford describe it. For a book this thick, it is a bit thin on recipes. I was disappointed that there are not more main dish seafood recipes. What is there is good, there just ought to be more.

A True Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My wife and I bought this on our honeymoon in 1983 and it has become a staple in my cooking. In fact, I dug this up on Amazon.com on the off-chance I could find a copy, because is so dog-eared and stained that some old favorites are alomost unreadable. Simple recipes, with simple ingredients, pretty much idiot proof. Even the basic sauces are things a novice could use. This is the true creole and cajun cooking before the new cooks on the networks. Also, forget the recipes- this book has a fascinating group of narratives about the old Louisiana and New Orleans. They are worth the price of admission.

This is a Great Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A little old lady in a New Orleans gift shop recommended this book and promised me that I would be happy with it even though I didn't recognize the author and it wasn't a glamorous book. She was absolutely right. I have made about a dozen and a half of the recipes in this book and every single one of them has been a crowd pleaser. My family is loud and rowdy, so when a meal makes them go silent except for the occassional utterance of "oh my gawsh, that's good", you know it's a winner. Most of the recipes require you to do things "the long way." I haven't noticed any tips on how to shave time. Soniat's writing is personal and folksy, and his stories are touching, and he lets you know that good cooking is a labor of love and you just can't take shortcuts.

My particular favorites in this book are the Chicken-Corn Maquechoux (a delicious, light stew that makes the whole house smell good while it simmers away), and his simple bread pudding recipe (which I've made once as published and ever since by adding some cinnamon and soaking the raisins and apples in a splash of rum for a couple of hours first--take his advice and make sure the loaf of french bread is really stale for this one; the final textures is fantastic).

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The Best -- Bar none!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have had this cookbook for many years. I first purchased it back in 1977, and it is without a doubt the best in authentic Cajun cooking. My original Pirate's Pantry finally fell apart from many years of use; but, although I recently replaced it, I still have my old original stuffed into a manila envelope. I love this cookbook!!!

FRIED CHICKEN!! 4 out of 5 stars.

A cookbook to pass down through generations 5 out of 5 stars.

I think every single woman I know has this cookbook. It's as if you get one after a certain age as a "right of passage" or something in this town. I have this cookbook, my mother has it and my Grandmother had it. We have never ran across a recipe in this book that was not great! Buy it! You will NOT be disappointed.

Pirate's Pantry Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

I've had (earlier printing - plastic bound) version of this cook book for at least 25 years. I absolutely love it. Unfortunately, after much use the binding broke and my cook book was a total mess, although I still frequently used it. I actually went online to order one for my new daughter-in-law and was delighted to see it in hard cover. So, I bought four (my daughter-in-law, my daughter, one as a gift for a friend and another for myself). I am delighted with the quality of this cook book. I come from a long line of great cajun cooks (my mom and both sister also have the cook book). I've eaten cajun food all of my life. These recipes are delicious, truly cajun and easy to prepare. The informative welcome to each section is a delightful extra. I would strongly recommend this cook book for anyone who enjoys cooking delicious meals. I will purchase them again for gifts for friends and family.

Editorial Review:

Southern barbecue and barbecue traditions are the primary focus of Cornbread Nation 2, our second collection of the best of Southern food writing. "Barbecue is the closest thing we have in the United States to Europe's wines or cheeses; drive a hundred miles and the barbecue changes," writes John Shelton Reed. Indeed, no other dish is served a dozen different ways just between Memphis and Birmingham.

In tribute to what Vince Staten calls "the slowest of the slow foods," contributors discuss the politics, sociology, and virtual religion of barbecue in the South, where communities are defined by what wood they burn, what sauce they make, and what they serve with barbecue. Jim Auchmutey links barbecue to the success of certain Southern politicians; Marcie Cohen Ferris looks at kosher brisket; and Robb Walsh investigates why black cooks have been omitted from the accepted histories of Texas barbecue, despite their seminal role in its development.

Beyond the barbecue pit, John Martin Taylor sings the virtues of boiled peanuts, Calvin Trillin savors Cajun boudin, and Eddie Dean revisits his days driving an ice cream truck deep in the Appalachian Mountains. From barbecue to scuppernongs to popsicles, the forty-three newspaper columns, magazine pieces, poems, and essays collected here confirm that a bounty of good writing exists when it comes to good eating, Southern style.

Veganism Rocks ... North, East, West & South 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

So many think that all they would eat would be salads & veggies if they chose a vegan lifestyle.

This cookbook dispels that concept with yummy recipes from traditional southern & western cuisines.

Choose a more peaceful healthy way of eating starting with this book & branching out to other cookbooks, transitional foods and vegweb.com for ideas & support.

Editorial Review:

Two great vegan cookbooks combined: an anthology of Vanessa's "The Dirty South", issues 1-3 and Ryan Splint's Australian masterpiece "Hot Damn and Hell Yeah". HD&HY is a finely illustrated and designed collection of recipes that aren't afraid of spices but are suited for those into easy to find ingredients that don't taste like sawdust. The Dirty South is a unique take on southern cooking, vegan style with some tasty delectibles, especially for those not afraid of garlic or baking. We are really excited to unleash this new vegan cooking onslaught onto the world. A 128 page book sizzling with great cooking ideas and recipes. Nutrition isn't always the first priority for either of these editors but the recipes are incredible in both cases.

Not what I expected 3 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I was excited to see this product listed because I love the Southern Living Annual Recipes and assumed this would be a collection of the best recipes from each year. However, this was not the case. For example, a recipe for Sour Cream Poundcake, which was in one of the annual recipes books and had received one of the highest ratings ever, was not included in this cookbook. Instead, the cookbook was filled with what I would consider fairly generic recipies (i.e. Chex Mix, cheese straws, etc). What was more annoying, some of the items which were pictured in the introductory section and looked delicious (i.e. a pecan pie cake) were not even included in this book! I was generally disappointed and returned the item.

Classic Southern Comfort Food 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this cookbook and didn't really look at it until later. It was relegated to the shelf with the other cookbooks. One day, I needed a recipe for something really Southern. I looked everywhere, including the Internet, to no avail for a suitable recipe. I found many classic comfort food recipes that were simpler than I remember. Every recipe I tried has been great. I won't give it an A+ for health though. This is the full fat, full egg, full sugar version. I will say this though, many healthier substitutes work well in this cookbook for like fat free dairy products, egg substitute, or whole wheat bread. I even tried Splenda in these recipes and you couldn't tell a difference between it and sugar.

Editorial Review:

Sydney Saylor Farr is a woman who knows Appalachia well. Born on Stoney Fork in southeastern Kentucky, she has lived much of her life close to the mountains, among people whose roots are deep in the soil and who pass on to their children a love for the land, a strong sense of belonging and of place.

Mountain food and how it is cooked is very much a part of this sense of place. Ask any displaced Appalachians what they miss most and they will probably talk about soup beans, country ham, and homemade buscuits. They may also remember the kitchens at home, the warmth from the wood-burning stove, the smell of coffee, and the family gathered around the kitchen table to eat and talk.

More than Moonshine is both a cookbook and a narrative that recounts the way of life of southern Appalachia from the 1940s to 1983. The women of Stoney Fork rarely had cash to spend, so they depended upon the free products of nature - their cookery used every nutritious, edible thing they could scour from the gardens and hillsides. These survival skills are recounted in the pages of More than Moonshine, with instructions for making moonshine whiskey, for fixing baked groundhog with sweet potatoes, for making turnip kraut, craklin’ bread, egg pie, apple stackcake, and other traditional dishes.

More than Moonshine is more than a cookbook. It evokes a way of life in the mid-twentieth century not unlike that of pioneer days.

River Road, A Second Helping 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Having lived in New Orleans for 8 years, I acquired a taste for the unbelievable food there. In 1988, I moved away and some of the most important items to pack were my copies of the River Road cookbooks. I have just discovered my son has "borrowed" my Second Helping cookbook only to inform me it is his now. I now find myself having to reorder it as it contains so many easy to prepare and outstanding recipes. Congratulations to your contributors for a job well done.

Easy to Prepare Meals 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

When I say that this cookbook is one of my favorites, topped only by Talk About Good, that is saying a lot. I have found myself pulling this off of my mother's shelves after she has 'borrowed it'.

When I got this as a gift from my Sister In Law, I didn't know what a treat I was in for. Thank you!

The recipes are fairly easy to prepare and the results turn out great meals.

My only issue with any cajun cooking is that it sometimes calls for those Louisiana type of ingredients that are hard to get anywhere else but Louisiana (tasso for example!)

Editorial Review:

A Walter s. McIlhenny Community Cookbook Hall of Fame Winner. This cookbook is filled with family-friendly creole and cajun cuisine. There are 600 recipes many of which use convenience products to help you get dinner on the table quicker. It is a must have for a family who insists on quality meals, but has little time to prepare them.
