Disappointed... the first book is better 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I looked forward to the publication of this book for months, but when it finally arrived I was terribly disappointed. The first FBC cookbook was full of wonderful recipes (served in the cafe), including bakery items: cookies, pies, etc. This book has many fewer recipes, and those included are not "standard biscuit fare." There are no recipes for their famous bakery items. I have been satisfied, but not wow-ed by the recipes that I have used from the cookbook.

If you can find a copy of the first cookbook, buy it instead.

Editorial Review:

The Flying Biscuit Cafe Cookbook is the long awaited second cookbook from Atlanta's immensely popular Flying Biscuit Cafe, consistently hailed as one of Atlanta's top ten restaurants since it opened its doors in 1993. Brimming with one of a kind recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and of course -"flying biscuits"- it's the only cookbook you need to get to the heart of authentic Southern comfort food.

Editorial Review:

For hundreds of years, Savannah has charmed residents and visitors alike with its fine old architecture, wide, cobbled streets and romantic moss-draped trees. Though less widely known than its haunting beauty and fabled eccentricities, part of the enchantment of Savannah is its cuisine. Blending European, Asian, and West African customs Damon Lee Fowler introduces The Savannah Cookbook, offering recipes for Southern classics such as rice and grits, soups and stews, poultry, fish and meat dishes, as well as a helpful chapter on pantry basics.

Southern Sideboards 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have been using this book since my Missippi Magnolia mother gave me a copy when it first came out. There's not a bad recipe in it. Even the Crispy Chicken Cassarole, which my children called "glop" is good. In fact, I'm making the Strawberries Romanoff for a get-together tomorrow night. My copy has just worn out, therefore I'm ordering a new one, make it two, one for my new daughter-in-law in NJ.

ONE OF THE BEST! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have the first edition of this book, which I have used for many years. It has some of my all-time favorite recipes (Country Captain, Apple Torte, Helen Mary's Chicken, Shrimp Dip just to name a few). These recipes were well-tested prior to the publication, and I have never found an error in the ingredient list or instructions. There are recipes for every occasion, and every one I have tried has been great. I recently bought one for my thirty-year-old son who has become interested in cooking. When I gave it to him, he laughed and said, "Oh, yes, I recognize this!" due to the many times I used it when he was growing up. This is a great addition to your collection or a great gift for anyone on your list!

The Real Deal 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I've used this book for about six years now, and have never been disappointed. Mr. Guste's Chicken Creole is soulful and authentic, and his Gumbo is gospel truth. He does not trifle with passing fancies such as lite, fusion or lo-fat anything. His ingredients are unapologetically authentic: many cooks outside the South may need to do some creative substitution. A minor complaint is that this cookbook, like most nowadays, seems not to have been edited at all, and a few ingredients and steps are missing, so a smart user will read carefully and in some cases extrapolate. But the recipes are simple and honest, well within the skills of the average cook, and the results will make you appreciate the only high cuisine native to America.

Adapts dishes for home use and simplifies many of the steps involved in producing the classics 5 out of 5 stars.

The best of Louisiana cookery comes from a restauranteur and French-trained chief who uses his background to select the definitive and best dishes of New Orleans. Creole cooking has a reputation for complexity: not so in The 100 Greatest New Orleans Creole Recipes, which adapts dishes for home use and simplifies many of the steps involved in producing the classics. No color photos here - but the simplified dishes don't need them.

A true "cajun" cookbook!! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is a treasure! I am from Southern Louisiana but now live in Colorado. I never really wanted to learn to cook when I was young, but now that I am older and a mom I want to pass on my heritage to my children. This book is very authentic. It is exactly like my mother cooks--with no weird ingredients. The recipes are fantastic and the commentary witty. It also has a glossary for those persons who don't understand some of the cajun terminology. This book was my "early" Mother's Day present. And, I couldn't be any happier.

Excellent and True 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been cooking cajun foods for over 40 years and my mother before me. This book is so true to the authentic "French" cajun cooking found in homes in and around Lafayette, Louisiana that I sometimes am surprised at its accuracy. I watch Miss Lucy on PBS and this book follows her show. I just purchased two more books as gifts for my children and will give it to them as the truest representation of the preparation and enjoyment of "French" cajun cooking. On her show, her accent is alittle too corney but look beyond that and enjoy!!

Editorial Review:

When Alex Patout opened the original Patout's restaurant in New Iberia, Louisiana, in 1979, he set out to show food lovers that there was more to Cajun than blackened redfish. Now the family operates busy restaurants in New Orleans and Los Angeles as well, and in Patout's Cajun Home Cooking, the first authentic guide to the most popular regional cuisine in the country, Patout takes his culinary mission another giant step further, divulging the dark, spicy secrets of Cajun food as it is prepared by the Cajuns themselves.

Beginning with the basics -- roux from light to dark, techniques from smoking to smothering -- Patout initiates the home cook into a culinary style that has developed over the decades in bayou country kitchens. Dozens of exciting recipes introduce a savory repertoire of Cajun delicacies: appetizers both rustic and refined (Cheese Biscuits, Daube Glace, Cajun Pate); slow-simmered gumbos (Shrimp and Okra, Duck and Sausage, and more), soups, and stews (Red fish Courtbouillon, Shrimp and Crab Stew); hearty main dishes (from classic Jambalayas and Etouffees to such Patout specialties as Lady Fish, Shrimp Ms. Ann, Veal on the Teche, and Maw Maw's Cajun Chicken Stew); luscious side dishes (Maque Choux, Smothered Snap Beans, Cajun Hash Browns); homey and festive sweets (Old Dominion Pound Cake, Calas, Pralines, Gateau au Sirop); and preserves and pickles (Chow Chow, Hot Pepper Jelly) for the cook with canning fever. And Patout shows how to pull it all together, with menus for all occasions and a list of mail-order sources for fresh seafood and special ingredients.

Adaptable, easy on the budget, and above all exciting, Patout's Cajun Home Cooking brings Cajun back to where it originated -- the home kitchen.

I love this Cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Of all the regional cookbooks I own, this is one of my favorites! This cookbook has great suggestions for things to take to different gatherings from Gold Cup Horse Races to Neighborhood Picnics. I especially love the tips and suggestions at the bottom of the recipes. So far, I have tried about 20 recipes and all of them have been fabulous! The recipes are clear and easy to follow. This book is a necessity for delicious homemade treats to impress your friends. It also makes a great bridal shower and teacher gift.

Great book, great food 5 out of 5 stars.

I love cookbooks and own a lot of them. I bought this book two years ago and have given many copies as gifts to peple who like to cook. My family loves the recipes. We made some of the recipes for my niece's wedding brunch in Denver last year and the guests raved about the food. The recipes and instructions are well-written and the results are great.

What Can I Bring 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a fantastic book. Lots of great recipes with new adaptions to ones that have been around for awhile. Using a different spice or combining of various ingredients gives news twists to old standbys and favorites. I am an avid reader of cookbooks and don't have that much time to cook now that my family is grown and left the nest, but with this book, I am very anxious to get back in the kitchen and create some new and exciting things. Cookbooks by Jr. Leagues always have some of the very best recipes and this one is certainly no exception. Highly recommend whether just for reading, or looking for something new and different.

As much fun to browse through as it is exciting to draw from 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Superbly enhanced with color photography, Breakfast At Brennan's And Dinner, Too showcases original recipes from the menus of New Orleans's world-famous Brennan's Restaurant. From Buster Crab Pecan; New Orleans Barbecued Shrimp; Creole Onion Soup; and Brennan's Blackened Redfish; to Crabmeat Lundi Grass; Tournedos Royal with Sweetbreads; Les Peches Flamees; and the house specialty Brennan Dressing, Breakfast At Brennan's And Dinner, Too is an elegant, "kitchen friendly" cookbook that is as much fun to browse through as it is exciting to draw from for truly memorable dining.

Editorial Review:

Breakfast At Brennan's and Dinner Too is a most recent collection of more than 230 recipes from New Orleans' world-famous Brennan's Restaurant. This 288 page hardbound edition includes many of Brennan's original signature dishes such as Bananas Foster as well as numerous current, culinary creations published for the very first time. Each recipe has been home tested to ensure its accuracy.

Preceding each of the seven recipe sections, color photographs feature Brennan's exquisite cuisine. This handsome 8 1/2 X 11 inch book also includes photographs of the restaurant's elegant decor and surroundings. Significantly, Breakfast At Brennan's And Dinner Too is much more than a collection of recipes. In a tribute to its founder, the late Owen Edward Brennan, Brennan's shares with the reader its accurate history and legacy. This informative narrative is inclusive of old clippings, unique illustrations and nostalgic memorabilia. - A great gift for any occasion!
