Charleston Receipts...a timeless classic 4 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

Anytime you can find a cookbook that has been reprinted as many times as this one, you know that you have found something special. As diverse as the city itself, CHARLESTON RECEIPTS has a unique blend of regional recipes, kitchen hints and ideas, and practical shortcuts. The offerings range from the everyday (Turkey Tetrazzini) to the sublime (Hampton Polonaise...a luscious cake from 1865).This cookbook has been handed down from one good cook to another since 1950, and with good reason. It is well suited for the modern cook as well as the kitchen veteran.

Wonderful Southern Recipes 5 out of 5 stars.

If you like country music and its celebrities, you'll love this book.

Starting with stars from the early days of the Opry like Uncle Dave Macon and Pee Wee King, all the way to present-day performers such as Dierks Bentley and Trace Adkins, there is something for everyone. You can read about Brad Paisley and Little Jimmy Dickens going fishing together and find out what's in their favorite fishing supper. Learn what's in the fudge Porter Wagoner learned to make from his mother, and you'll need more than a cookbook to figure out the ingredients in Johnny Cash's mother's Scripture Cake.

History and food are blended into stories of celebrities being surprised with invitations to join the Grand Ole Opry. There are menus for some of the induction parties and you might be surprised at the food served.

Minnie Pearl, Roy Acuff, Dolly Parton, and George Jones are just a few of the big names included in the book. There are pictures of everyone, if not of the food. Small chapters about well-known performers and their love of food make them bear a stronger resemblance to us mere mortals. Good food and entertainment make for a good experience and this book is no different.

Armchair Interviews says: The stories are entertaining, the recipes enticing.

Editorial Review:

Country music and country cooking fans everywhere will savor this new official cookbook of the Grand Ole Opry and its members, featuring favorite recipes of country music legends past and present and the stories behind them.

Editorial Review:

No southern food enthusiast should be without this gathering of 1,300 flavorful recipes for such classic dishes as fried chicken, cornbread, pickled watermelon rinds, and sweet potato pie.

Southern Cooking had its origins in Henrietta Dull's immensely popular cooking column in the Atlanta Journal, whose readers faithfully clipped its recipes. The demand for reprints of perennial favorites or early, hard-to-find dishes prompted Mrs. Dull to compile them into her now-famous book. Not only does it include individual recipes, but it also suggests menus for various occasions and holidays. Her famous Georgia Christmas Dinner, for instance, consists of grapefruit, roast turkey, dry stuffing, dry rice, turkey gravy, candied sweet potatoes, buttered green peas, cranberry jelly, celery hearts, hot biscuits, sweet butter, syllabub, and cake. Mrs. Dull was one of the most sought-after caterers in Atlanta even before she began her newspaper column. Her vast, practical knowledge of food and its preparation, and her embrace of new, but never gimmicky, innovations in cooking served her readers well. Upon Mrs. Dull's death in 1964 at the age of 100, the Atlanta Journal said that her book was "the standard by which regional cooks have been measured since 1928." Southern Cooking is the starting place for anyone in search of authentic dishes done in the traditional style.

Editorial Review:

"She's like a modern-day, southern-fried Erma Bombeck or Dave Barry." --Booklist

Is the brand sticker still affixed to your sauté pan? Is your wok used solely as a receptacle for potato chips? Does your blender only see the light of day when Baccardi or Tequila is involved?

If so, then welcome to the Kitchen Virgin Club. But don't despair--you're in the illustrious company of Susan Reinhardt: syndicated columnist, spokeswoman for skewed southern bellehood...and one truly lousy cook. In this cleaver-sharp new collection of food stories, culinary missteps, and recipes from yummy to yucky, Reinhardt comes clean--way clean--as the unapologetic product of a long line of talented, fascinating, funny women who have regular brushes with homicide by pot roast. From "The Toaster Oven is a Bee-otch" to "When Road Kill Makes it to Mikasa," as well as the titular tale of the socialite who shaved her fuzzy greens, these stranger-than-fiction accounts will have you laughing until milk spews out of your nose. And for those inspired to graduate from Kitchen Virgin to Kitchen 'Tute, there's "Bone Apple Cheat!"-- Reinhardt's own shortcut-to-real-food recipes. So next time you're tempted to make Taco Bell your last (okay, first) resort, crack open this book, have a laugh...and get cookin'.

"So engaging...so honest...will make you laugh out loud." --The Asheville Citizen-Times

"Like hanging out with your bluntest, most mischievous friend, the one who never fails to crack you up." --Chicago Sun-Times

"Funny and touching...Reinhardt is not afraid to put it all out there." --The Pilot (N.C.)

"Susan Reinhardt takes the naked, honest truth and sets it on fire in a blaze of laughter... will have you holding your sides the whole time." --Laurie Notaro, Autobiography of a Fat Girl

"She can break your heart in one sentence and leave you laughing till you're breathless in the next." --Julie Cannon, True Love & Homegrown Tomatoes

Editorial Review:

Who hasn't fantasized about leaving behind the chaos of everyday life and moving someplace where life is simpler? Well, that's just what chef and food writer Paula Disbrowe did when she left New York City and moved to Texas. She traded her subway MetroCard for a pickup truck and her stiletto heels for a pair of down-home cowboy boots.

In Cowgirl Cuisine, Paula tells her story through food. She weaves together romance, adventure, and more than a few laughs as she celebrates the beauty of flavorful food, fresh air, and her own wholesome recipes, all while taking home cooks on a journey well off the beaten path.

Like Texas itself, the recipes in Cowgirl Cuisine are big-hearted and bold—whole-grain muffins bursting with berries, salads loaded with leafy herbs and avocado, and fiery bowls of chili. Paula's food is healthful and full of nutrients, but this is not a diet cookbook—cowgirls don't have time to count calories (besides, they burn it all off hoisting newborn calves, hiking the hills, and galloping off on long trail rides). Instead, this is food that is satisfying and easy to prepare, which leaves plenty of time for living life to the fullest.

From hearty ranch breakfasts to fresh salads, spicy nibbles, seductive desserts, and killer watermelon margaritas, Paula's recipes are full of her signature zest, spunk, and spice. Start your day off right with Canyon Granola or Cowgirl Migas. For lunch, have a nourishing bowl of silky Roasted Pumpkin Soup with Red Chile Cream or Chicken and Citrus Slaw Tostadas. For dinner, try Gazpacho Risotto with Garlic Shrimp or Cowboy Pot Roast with Coffee and Whiskey. And be sure to save room for one of Paula's decadent desserts, such as Chocolate Pecan Squares or Dulce de Leche Flan with Pepita Brittle.

In addition to her recipes, Paula includes humorous and heartfelt vignettes about wild animals on the loose, scorpions in the sheets, and Casanova cowboys. And the pages are filled with lush photographs of food and life on the range. Cowgirl Cuisine isn't just spurs and salsa—it's about following your dream. So saddle up and follow yours.
