Excellent, fun choice 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this gem while wandering thru my library. I thought I'd try a few recipes and if I liked it, would go ahead and buy it. Well, I've had it about a week. I've made the meatloaf twice (once for a carry-in at work), the beef vegetable soup and today I am trying my hand at the Chicken tetrazzini. I am also buying a copy for me and another for a friend!

Editorial Review:

A lively cookbook for Southerners who wish to recapture the tastes, smells, and memories of their youth -- and for fans of Southern cooking everywhere

Food in the South is a religion. Yet the problem with a lot of Southern cooking is the ever-present can of cream of mushroom soup. In this lively, humorous cookbook, Robert St. John shows Southerners (and all fans of the cuisine) how to indulge in the ideas and tastes that inspired Southern cooking, without resorting to ingredients like that canned soup in the recipe. The classic dishes are all here; they just taste better! Sections include cocktail party fare, funeral food, breakfasts, salads and soups, summer suppers, cakes, vegetables, chitlins, desserts, sides, and much more. Recipes include Buttermilk Chicken, Pecan Crusted Redfish, Fried Catfish, Cajun Popcorn, Corn Fritters, and lots of other Southern classics.

5 Starr all the way 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great cookbook, one of the best I have had the priviledge of having this year. So many new and easy recipes, wants to make you start cooking right away. And with easy ingredients you can find quickly, like crescent rolls, flavored cream cheeses and so on. This book is a true Keeper, and on my rating chart, a 5 Star all the way.

Editorial Review:

The Junior League of Monroe encourages you to begin Cooking In High Cotton with their third cookbook filled with 221 recipes. This cookbook not only features southern recipes for all occasions, but also great food tips and side notes to help individualize dishes to your own palate.

Editorial Review:

For twenty-five years Recipes from Miss Daisy’s has been the cookbook of choice for the thousands of people who have enjoyed the warm hospitality and delicious food that were the hallmarks of Miss Daisy’s Tearoom in Franklin and in the Green Hills area of Nashville, Tennessee. Now, in response to popular demand, a new edition of the "wonderful little yellow cookbook" has been lovingly prepared for those who have nearly worn out their well-thumbed copies as well as generations of Middle Tennesseans who will continue to enjoy it for years to come.

The story of Miss Daisy’s Tearoom is as interesting as the food served there. When Carter’s Court in Franklin was still on the drawing board, the developers recognized the need for a place where ladies could come for lunch. When a turn-of-the-century house was moved there, people exclaimed, "That’s got to be a tearoom," and so it was. The restaurant moved to Green Hills in 1982, expanding to a full-service restaurant, and returning to Franklin in 1986 as Daisy’s of Carter’s Court.

The food in Recipes from Miss Daisy’s is the same food that was served at the restaurants plus some more wonderful dishes that no proper Southerner could resist. Turkey Divan, Buttermilk Pie, Congealed Cucumber Salad, Sally Lunn Muffins, Creamed Chicken, Festive Cranberry Salad, Marinated Carrots, Fudge Pie, Garden Tomato Stuffed with Tearoom Tuna Salad, Miss Daisy’s Beef Casserole (a favorite!), and Tomato Aspic are among the Tearoom favorites that have become classic fare for Middle Tennesseans and across the South.

Updated to include serving amounts and to clarify some of the original instructions, this 25th anniversary edition of Recipes from Miss Daisy’s will earn a well-deserved place in kitchens and on cookbook shelves everywhere.

Editorial Review:

Since early colonial times in America, Jewish southerners have been tempted by delectable regional foods. Because some of these foods--including pork and shellfish--have been traditionally forbidden to Jews by religious dietary laws, southern Jews face a special predicament. In a culinary journey through the Jewish South, Arkansas native Marcie Cohen Ferris explores how southern Jews embraced, avoided, and adapted southern food and, in the process, have found themselves at home.

From colonial Savannah and Charleston to Civil War era New Orleans and Natchez, from New South Atlanta to contemporary Memphis and across the Mississippi and Arkansas Deltas, Ferris examines the expressive power of food throughout southern Jewish history. She demonstrates how southern Jews reinvented traditions as they adjusted to living in a largely Christian world where they were bound by regional rules of race, class, and gender.

Featuring a trove of photographs, Matzoh Ball Gumbo also includes anecdotes, oral histories, and more than thirty recipes to try at home. Ferris's rich tour of southern Jewish foodways shows that, at the dining table, Jewish southerners created a distinctive religious expression that reflects the evolution of southern Jewish life.

I would not miss buying the new Southern Living Annual Recipes each year! The recipes are always dependably wonderful and a real hit for family meals or special occassions. The new layout(in the last couple of years) is much more appealing than the old books. The appealing photos make me even more interested in trying a new dish. Thanks for another great year!

As always a great buy 5 out of 5 stars.

authoritative insight into regional USA cuisine 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The "how to" pages will help the reader pass oneself off in NOLA as a local; the recipes are obviously authentic, easy to follow, and bring back fond memories of my college days at Tulane and "Crayola" in the early seventies. I learned how to cook in New Orleans. I studied the menus of the local restaurants, (Etienne's on Maple St) and this book is a god-send. Jaeger far surpasses some upstart transplant from New Jersey. Ten Speed Press should be complimented for bring such unknown, but important insights into our country's local cuisines.
