Editorial Review:

The South is known for its hospitality, and award-winning chef Elizabeth Terry is known for her ability to create magic in the kitchen. With Savannah Seasons Chef Terry, working with her daughter Alexis, brings all the warmth of the South, and the secrets of her culinary wizardry, into the kitchens of home cooks everywhere.

She began cooking simply for her family--husband Michael, and daughters Alexis and Celeste--but for the past fifteen years Elizabeth Terry, winner of the l995 James Beard Award as Best Chef in the Southeast, and her eponymous restaurant in Savannah, have been known for serving simply prepared, perfectly fresh, innovative dishes in the Southern tradition. Unlike most great restaurants, Elizabeth on 37th is a family enterprise--as is Savannah Seasons. All of the two hundred recipes collected here have been tested by co-author Alexis in the Terry home kitchen (located "above the store") to ensure that they are well within the range of any amateur cook.

From Hearty Okra Gumbo with Chicken and Shrimp to Savannah Red Rice, from Soft Shell Crabs to Ragout of Venison, you will find interpreted within these pages all the native bounty of a rich regional cuisine--shellfish, sweet Vidalia onions, and black-eyed peas; recipes for relishes and marinades; crisp, fresh salads; delicious baked goods, and much more. And throughout there are chef's tips and stories, in the voices of Elizabeth, Alexis, Michael, and Celeste, about the food, about life in Savannah, and about their experiences at "the family restaurant." Savannah Seasons is not only a book of outstanding recipes but a book full of warmth, joy, and hospitality.

Editorial Review:

A gifted chef, restaurateur, and writer working at a time when Americans were beginning to take a new interest in their culinary heritage, Bill Neal (1950-1991) helped raise Southern food to national prominence.

Having rescued spattered and faded recipe cards from the Chapel Hill restaurant they founded together, Bill's former wife and business partner, Moreton Neal, has compiled a book that embodies the diversity and range of his cooking and illustrate the aesthetic that he applied to making meals. Remembering Bill Neal features more than 150 recipes--most of them never published before--from all stages of Bill's career: classic French dishes from La Residence, Southern traditional cooking from Crook's Corner, and fast and easy recipes from home. Moreton's introductory passages and headnotes introduce Bill to readers and put his recipes in the context of his career and his legacy as a chef.

Part cookbook, part memoir, this volume both instructs and entertains, showing the lasting importance of Bill Neal's influence in the American regional cooking movement as well as being a muse and a mentor to a generation of Southern home and professional cooks.

Delicious and accurate southern cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Elvis did not grow up with a silver spoon in his mouth. All through his life, he stayed true to his roots and loved a type of southern cooking called "soul food". Soul food is based on plain and common ingredients found in any southern kitchen no matter how poor your family is. It's also significantly influenced by African ingredients brought to the US and ways of cooking.

These recipes are good, easy to make, and make me feel just a little closer to my southern heritage even though I don't live there now. Plus the narrative and insight into the Presely family's ways is very interesting.

FUN 4 out of 5 stars.

My copy was even signed by Vester.
have yet to try any of the recipes, but the book is definatley 1970's and fun for the kitchen shelf.
a few pics in crappy black and white.
over all neat to have

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I don't know how accurate these recipes are as far as Elvis goes, but they are truly southern. I recommend this book to any Elvis fan. I will be trying some at Christmas.

This is a great cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great cookbook in my opinion. It has old fashioned recipes that reminded me of home when I was a child. It also tells the last meal that Elvis had eaten, yes this is truly a wonderful recipe book..

Biltmore: A look into the past 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Having visited the Vanderbilt Estate called The Biltmore in Asheland, NC I purchased this book from their gift shop as a gift. Upon reading the wonderful stories and pictures of entertaining in a bygone era complete with actual menus and recipes, I knew I had to purchase the book for my own library. I was pleased to find this book on Amazon.com and actually at a lower price. I never did visit the estate (a very expensive entry fee that rivals the cost of visiting a modern-day theme park)but feel an appreciation for the opulence of the era and compendium of recipes still being used today in the Biltmore Estate restaurant are excellent. This book is a great gift for anyone interested in the social mores of a bygone era whether they enjoy cooking or not.

Editorial Review:

Historically, the Biltmore has been known for hospitality. Today, this tradition continues with its committment to the table as a place to gather and create memories. This collection of recipes from the Biltmore Chefs reflects the diversity of Biltmore's past and present, with menus fit for a Vanderbilt guest.

By far one of the best books out there for people who find themselves in the kitchen alot. I have been cooking for too many years to count and I still reference this book frequently. Most of my friends and family own this book because I have recommended it or given it as a gift.

I've been cooking for 29 years and still find a need to use this book on a regular basic. I LOVE IT - no home should be without it!!!!

Pleasant Surprise 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

What a pleasant surprise!!!!!! Southern Living always publishes great cookbooks, which is exactly what I expected here. But, this really isn't a cookbook. It's a great reference book. The lay out is like a food dictionary with an alphabetical listing of cooking terms and ingredients and along the way there are recipes that accompany the ingredient or term being referenced. You will pull this one from the shelf over and over again.

Editorial Review:

Smart cooks will turn to these pages over and over for 350 never-fail recipes, timesaving tips, and fast answers to common questions. Includes an A-to-Z listing of cooking secrets and shortcuts gleaned from over 30 years and 30,000 recipes in the famous Southern Living Test Kitchens.

Best Pound Cake recipie ever 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I love this book, it's full of great recipies and at the same time it narrates on the lives of Mrs. Rowe's family. It's a great book, I recommend it 100%. I made the Pound Cake recipie and it's the best.

Well pleased 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I ordered Mrs. Rowe's Cookbook for a friend that collects cookbooks, and I felt sure she didn't have this one. I also ordered a copy for myself. I have enjoyed the recipes as well as the story of her life. A great gift. My friend was also pleased.

Editorial Review:

In 1947, single mother Mildred Rowe helped start a small restaurant in the foothills of Appalachia. Today, that restaurant serves half a million locals and visitors a year, making it the most popular reason to stop over in Staunton, Virginia. "Mrs . Rowe's Family and Restaurant Cookbook" tells the story of this Shenandoah Valley institution and collects the best of Mrs. Rowe's cherished home-style recipes - timeless American comfort food like spoon bread, fried chicken, and cherry pie. Illustrated with beautiful vintage photographs, this nostalgic tribute is guaranteed to fill hearts and bellies with a hankering for a real home-cooked meal.

Hog's Feet and Frog's legs 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Unless you have access to these two items or others such as oyster liquor, pork shoulder, or broken cracklings, this may not be the cookbook for you. There are excellent recipes for Southern Pecan Pie, Sweet Potato Pie, BBQ Spareribs, and Dixie Spoon Bread, so true Southerners and Gone With the Wind fans will appreciate the authenticity of the recipes, but I would not recommend this cookbook for those interested in quick, easy, healthy cooking.

Dust collector... 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is great for a memorabilia piece, but the recipes are horrible. Not a good cookbook for your everyday collection. If you are looking for good southern food, look for another cookbook. This is mainly a collectible.

My money gone with the wind 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book has a neat cover and a tie-in to a classic book I have loved forever. Turner Publications cranked it out and apparently does this for a lot of the classic movies it owns. How sad. It's very slim with a few recipes that are admittedly southern and pages of blank space. So I can write my own cookbook? I would send it back, but it's not worth the postage. Wish I had read the reviews before I bought. Don't waste your money.
