Editorial Review:

Hey there, y'all!

My favorite recipes came direct from my momma and grandmommas. I just love goin' through all the recipe cards they passed on to me and readin' their handwritten notes; it makes me remember our good times in the kitchen, gathered round the table. Sometimes, though, I need a little remindin' when it comes to writin' down my own recipes and recollections, so I've put together this darlin' little journal to get me (and you) started recordin'. I know I never forget a meal, but I also know that Jamie and Bobby aren't always listenin' to what I'm tellin' 'em.

So for you and the boys, I've included some tried-and-true recipes and some of my hard-learned tricks for gettin' out of culinary scrapes -- and Lord, honey, have there been a few. Whether it is a real disaster -- the boss and his wife are comin' over and the kitchen is full of smoke (no shame in servin' some takeout) -- or just an everyday bump in the road -- your husband didn't hear the buzzer, and the cake got a little dry in the oven (let some sugar water soak into those layers, and no one will know the difference) -- I've got your answer. Just get cookin' and let loose: nothin' makes memories like the smell of home-cooked meals. Jot down your ingredients and your musings, cut out a recipe card or two to share with friends, keep track of who came to dinner, who liked what, and who laughed the loudest; remember the good times and learn from the bad. Like I always say, there's not much in life you can't learn in the kitchen.

A great Value for the money. 5 out of 5 stars.

Where else can you find so many recipes all carefully tested in the Southern Living Test Kitchens in Birmingham? This annual volume collects the best recipes from a year's worth of magazines. It's a great collection in a kitchen-friendly format. Of course we especially liked the Thanksgiving recipes excerpted from our own book, "Three Guys From Miami Cook Cuban."

Southern American regional cooking at its best and a nice gift for anyone who loves great food...

Cookbook Lover 3 out of 5 stars.

The recipies in these Southern Living cookbooks are pretty good for the most part, but the organization is a disaster. No sections for types of recipies, such as cakes, vegetables, meat, they just put it all together in "menus" which you then have to read through to find anything. Too much work, its almost an accident when I actually find what I'm looking for. I'm glad I bought them used so that the price was about right for what they are.

Editorial Review:

This annual best-selling collection serves it up nice and tasty Southern style, of course. It compiles every kitchen-tested recipe, nearly 1,000 in all, from a whole years worth of Southern Living magazine into one heaven-sent volume. For family-friendly meals during the week, fabulous entertaining on the weekend, and everything in between, theres something special about Southern cookingand you dont have to live in the South to love it!

Editorial Review:

What would it be like to host an event catered by Nobu and Thomas Buckley, the executive chef of Nobu Miami? Now, food lovers and chefs everywhere can party like celebrities with Nobu Miami: The Party Cookbook, a visual treat and a celebration of the dazzlingly original fusion cuisine served in the Miami outpost of Nobus restaurant empire.
The book introduces an exotic line-up of finger foods and party dishes with Cuban, Peruvian and Japanese influences, at the same time that it conveys the sparkling, sun-kissed atmosphere of the restaurants Miami Beach location. The recipes are simple and take advantage of fresh, local seafood like Florida pompano and conch.
More than 70 party recipes, some created especially for the book, are featured. The recipes themselves are complemented by comments, anecdotes and sidebars by Nobu and Buckley, in which they explain what inspired them to create particular dishes. They also offer useful tips on cooking technique. The gorgeous, full-color photos are by James Beard Award-nominee Masashi Kuma.

Not Up To Snuff 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Like many of you, I collect these books year after year. This year was very disappointing. The book really is mainly recipes. I don't buy them for that, although the few I try are good. I buy this book mainly for the decorating and gift ideas. This year the book is really lacking in them. In years past they've shown how to decorate the outside of your house, the mantle, the table, and just about anywhere in a house that you could put a decoration. This year you basically have one mantle. That's it. Sorry, this book had me saying to myself, "I paid full price for this!!"

If you really want this book, buy it used or look at it first in the library before you make your decision.

Editorial Review:

Readers flock to this gorgeous book year after year because its always filled with fresh ideas for fun-filled Christmas celebrationsin that special Southern Living way. Decorating, crafting, gift giving, cooking, party planningtheyre all here, with tips and tricks that will have family and friends thinking youve been preparing for months.

Favorite Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've had this cookbook for many years, and it is my favorite.
I'm from New Orleans, and these are authentic Cajun recipes. There are many ways to cook a specific dish, and I find the various recipes reflect these personal touches. You cannot go wrong with "Talk About Good".

Talk About Good 4 out of 5 stars.

During my childhood, this was my mother's favorite cookbook - long before it was feasible to access such a wide range of recipes from the internet. She lost the cookbook (and everything else) in Hurricane Katrina, and it has been difficult to replace it. We were so happy to be able to find it on Amazon.com and give it to her for Christmas. Although she has relocated from New Orleans, the cookbook and the recipes that she used from it over the holidays, made us feel at home. The cookbook itself demonstrates authentic home cooking. Each recipe reflects the contributors' individual tastes and family traditions, and the types of cooking and ingredients provide a glimpse into a distinct culture. I find it as much fun to read the recipes and their variations as to cook them.

Editorial Review:

This cookbook takes you on a journey throuh south Louisiana's traditions, cultural heritage and the culinary artisries of Cajun food. It is in it's 23rd printng with over 70,000 copies sold. Winner of McIlhenny Hall of Fame Award.

this is a great book. It is like living and eating on the islands. I have longed to go back there, but this is as close as you can get without being there.

Outer Banks Food and History! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For those of you who collect cookbooks from vacation places visited, to those of you who want to remember local folklore and history of the people of the Outer Banks area, this is the book for you. Combining recipes from "old" families whose names go on for generations and new arrivals to stories of Blackbeard and lighthouses, this book captures the aura of the Outer Banks. Not just for cooks, it's an historical volume as well.

Great local cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.

We love to cook and always look to add to our collection of cookbooks. Our local coffee shop (Duck Cottage) had this on display along with on authors signing scheduled. We have already made five recipes and love them all. Highly recommend this book for local tales and flavor.

Editorial Review:

Born in Louisiana and at home in Tennessee, author Michael Lee West makes any old body feel downright welcome at her kitchen table. The coffee's hot, the iced tea is sweet, the cake's a little dry, and the conversation shows no sign of abating, even as the last page is turned and the cover is closed on Consuming Passions: A Food-Obsessed Life. The subject is variously food, family, and Mama, wherein Mama is as much a state of mind as an embodied soul. This is about the South, honey, some of which is of the New South stripe, and some of the Old.

In an easy, talkative style, author West spins tales, shares recipes, and hands out advice. In a chapter titled "Funeral Food," she includes recipes for Lemon Chess Pie and Lemon Squares. Among her rules for funeral food, she notes that dishes must be easy to transport as well as appealing to the bereaved. Some foods are simply inappropriate. "I myself have never seen appetizers at a funeral," West writes. "This is not the time to bring Better Than Sex Cake or Death by Chocolate. And it's never a good idea to use uncooked eggs in funeral food."

Consuming Passions is about home cooking, about church-basement food, about growing up in the shadow of Mama's kitchen and learning to cook away from home. West is ever willing to try something new, to fail, to try again, and to defend to her last breath the virtues of her favorite mayonnaise. West has the spirit of a close friend who'll share all her secrets, including her best recipes, some of which her various family members (we meet them all) failed to take to their graves. Sit down, pull up a chair, and get ready to listen. --Schuyler Ingle

SouLovely 5 out of 5 stars.

A delightful book full of delicious recipes with clear instructions, family histories and a whole new vocabulary of odd expressions and descriptions of food. I also bought the more famous "Sylvia's Family Soul Food Cookbook" (Sylvia has a famous restaurant in New York), but I actually prefer this one slightly more, although both are absolutely wonderful. Sylvia's book is larger, more colourful and has more photos than this unassuming book by Sheila Ferguson, but the recipes for both books are just as mouth-watering; Sheila's book has a delicious recipe for "Red Devil's Food Cake" and Sylvia has a similar one called "Red Velvet Cake", for example. It's just that "Soul Food" by Ms. Ferguson has a few more unusual and unknown recipes in it, like her recipe for "Fergy's Fried Chicken". Most of the recipes look delicious and it all depends on the skill of the cook attempting these gems I guess, but I think both books are great references on this style of cooking and both are equally perfect. I would just be more likely to give Sylvia's cookbook as a gift because it is more elegant and I'd probably keep "Soul Food" for myself. No, come to think of it, I'd keep both.

Editorial Review:

“Soul food is just what the name implies. It is soulfully cooked food . . . good for your ever-loving soul . . . the shur-‘nuf kinda down-home cookin’ that I grew up on,” writes Sheila Ferguson. Abundant in flavor and variety—ranging from classics such as barbecued spare ribs, fried chicken, cornbread, and collard greens to less well known but equally sumptuous recipes such as sweet potato biscuits, grits soufflĂ©, and wild fox grape wine—soul food is a truly American cuisine, originated in the deep South by slaves and later shaped and expanded by the rich diversity of African-American culture.

My wife and mother-in-law really love these Southern Living Annual Recipe books. I've purchased all the annual books & select other Sothern Living books for each of them for many years. Husbands & son-in-laws, purchasing these books is a quick & easy way to take care of part of your holiday & birthday shopping. Plus the food is great as well. Enjoy!!!

Wonderful Cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a beautiful book with all of Southern Living's recipes for 2006. You can feel assured that every recipe has been tested and tried by the Southern Living staff. Having one book with the recipes lets me now recycle all those magazines. I love the color pictures of some of the food and I love the seasonal recipes, since they are grouped by each month. Having the bonus section, which has recipes from the cook-off winners as well as slow-cooker recipes, is also a real plus. This book would make a nice gift as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to cook or simply sit and read a cookbook!

Editorial Review:

For culinary connoisseurs, the Southern Living annual recipe collection is a must-have. Thats because it serves up every tasty recipe from the past year, nearly 1,000 in all. From large family-style meals, to easy-to-pull-together weekend brunches, to everyday family-pleasing treatswith gorgeous photographs, step-by-step instructions, and more than a dash of genteel Southern charm and style. Not that you have to be from the South, by any means, to enjoy these mouthwatering recipes. (Just dont tell that to Southerners.)

This is absolutely one of my favorite cookbooks. I have tried a variety of recipes - Mostaccioli Bake, French Dip, Creamy Caramels, Twice Baked Potatoes, Moist Chocolate Cupcakes with the Mocha Frosting to name a few. Many of these recipes I've made several times. The creamy caramels have become my holiday "specialty". The recipes are easy to follow and the pictures are great.

I love this book 4 out of 5 stars.
