I had only recently heard of Justin Wilson. My husband and I love cajun food and I wanted to learn how to make it at home. Someone told me about him and a new fan was born!!! My husband bought me this book and another of Justin's to start out with.

The recipes are simple and delicious. I had no trouble making them, even as a first-timer. You can interchange a lot of the different kinds of meat as well - for example with the crawfish etoufee, we have made with shrimp as well as petite lobster.

The little stories in his book are entertaining as well. If you enjoy eating cajun, you will love this book!!!

Editorial Review:

In recipes and reminiscences equally delicious, Edna Lewis celebrates the uniquely American country cooking she grew up with some fifty years ago in a small Virginia Piedmont farming community that had been settled by freed slaves. With menus for the four seasons, she shares the ways her family prepared and enjoyed food, savoring the delights of each special time of year:

• The fresh taste of spring—the first shad, wild mushrooms, garden strawberries, field greens and salads . . . honey from woodland bees . . . a ring mold of chicken with wild mushroom sauce . . . the treat of braised mutton after sheepshearing.

• The feasts of summer—garden-ripe vegetables and fruits relished at the peak of flavor . . . pan-fried chicken, sage-flavored pork tenderloin, spicy baked tomatoes, corn pudding, fresh blackberry cobbler, and more, for hungry neighbors on Wheat-Threshing Day . . . Sunday Revival, the event of the year, when Edna’s mother would pack up as many as fifteen dishes (what with her pickles and breads and pies) to be spread out on linen-covered picnic tables under the church’s shady oaks . . . hot afternoons cooled with a bowl of crushed peaches or hand-cranked custard ice cream.

• The harvest of fall—a fine dinner of baked country ham, roasted newly dug sweet potatoes, and warm apple pie after a day of corn-shucking . . . the hunting season, with the deliciously “different” taste of game fattened on hickory nuts and persimmons . . . hog-butchering time and the making of sausages and liver pudding . . . and Emancipation Day with its rich and generous thanksgiving dinner.

• The hearty fare of winter—holiday time, the sideboard laden with all the special foods of Christmas for company dropping by . . . the cold months warmed by stews, soups, and baked beans cooked in a hearth oven to be eaten with hot crusty bread before the fire.

The scores of recipes for these marvelous dishes are set down in loving detail. We come to understand the values that formed the remarkable woman—her love of nature, the pleasure of living with the seasons, the sense of community, the satisfactory feeling that hard work was always rewarded by her mother’s good food. Having made us yearn for all the good meals she describes in her memories of a lost time in America, Edna Lewis shows us precisely how to recover, in our own country or city or suburban kitchens, the taste of the fresh, good, natural country cooking that was so happy a part of her girlhood in Freetown, Virginia.

Very Disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I've loved other Southern Living cookbooks and read some reviews that greatly overrated this book's appeal. I wasn't able to preview a copy at my library and was very unhappy with the results. Boring pedestrian recipes that might be quick and easy but look tasteless and boring. I was hoping for some quick innovative ideas but instead was presented with many recipes that involved mixing "a can of" with processed frozen foods. Yuck!!! Definitely not up to the usual standards of Southern Living.

The Classic Book on Southern Cooking

First published in 1942, Cross Creek Cookery was compiled by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at the request of readers who wanted to recreate the luscious meals described in Cross Creek -- her famous memoir of life in a Florida hamlet.

Lovers of old-fashioned, down-home cooking will treasure the recipes for Grits, Hush-Puppies, Florida Fried Fish, Orange Fluff, and Utterly Deadly Southern Pecan Pie. For more adventuresome palates, there are such unusual dishes as Minorcan Gopher Stew, Coot Surprise, Alligator-Tail Steak, Mayhaw Jelly, and Chef Huston's Cream of Peanut Soup.

Spiced with delightful anecdotes and lore, Cross Creek Cookery guides the reader through the rich culinary heritage of the deep tidal South with a loving regard for the rituals of cooking and eating. Anyone who longs for food -- and writing -- that warms the heart will find ample portions of both in this classic cookbook.

LAUGHTER, TRAILER PARKS AND RECIPES!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

THIS IS ANOTHER AMAZING SUPER FUNNY RUBY ANN TRAILER PARK COOKBOOK. THE STORIES SHE TELLS AND THE SITUATIONS THAT HAPPEN AT HOME IN THE TRAILER PARK WILL HAVE YOU LAUGHING OUTLOUD. THE RECIPES ARE AN ADDED BONUS AND I MUST ADMIT, I HAVE TRIED A FEW AND THEY ARE GOOD!!! ALL THE BOOKS BY RUBY ANN ARE A GREAT READ AND A FUNNY ONE TO SHARE WITH THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Great gift for the cookbook collector 5 out of 5 stars.

I collect cookbooks, and especially love a good rural or provencial cookbook. This was given to me as a gag gift years ago, and I just love it. It's screamingly funny, and though some of the dishes are deliberately awful (I think?) and may contain a bit too much Cheez Whiz and marshmallow fluff for some tastes, who couldn't love a cookbook with a recipe for 'Slut Puppies'? Give it a as a gift for your favorite foodie, and buy a copy for yourself; you won't be sorry.

This book is disappointing! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The trailer trash thing is overdone. I was turned off by the on and on ramblings and making fun of trailer park residents. I can listen to jokes of any kind but I found this very distasteful. This is 2007 not 1950. I collect cookbooks and thought this might have some fresh ideas and purchased it based on the good reviews. Everyone can choose their own style of humor, I just happen to see this book as turning into a white elephant or into the recycle bin. I felt the recipes were unremarkable and shallow, just as the author's commentary. There are so many great cookbooks at Amazon,I would look a little farther next time.

Not just a cookbook -- a sociological foray 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Just as in the original "White Trash Cooking", there are recipes here, but more of an emphasis on cooking for groups. The various situations that call for group food are presented -- quilting bees, funerals, reunions, obligatory holidays. Each chapter is prefaced by a short story illustrating the heart of white trash. The photos are truly astounding, and as in the first book, a big part of the book's appeal. These people don't ever apologize for being white-trash -- they're simple, unvarnished, and neighborly. So is their food.

The recipes are even more outrageously white-trashy than in the first book -- while there are several recipes I tried from the first, there aren't as many that I'd call accessible in this one. I also find dialect-writing difficult to follow. Still, the last chapter is truly touching: An eloquent plea for people to cook with their own hands, instead of relying on store-bought "mummafied" food. Well said!

Mother's Day Hit 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was tired of getting my mom the typical Mother's Day gifts, so I turned to cookbooks. Instead of typical cookbooks, I got my mother White Trash Cooking and White Trash Cooking II to play on the fact that she and my father relocated to Mississippi in recent years.

While I myself have not had the pleasure of reading these, they were a huge hit. We're just wondering where to get our hands on a cooter to cook up....

Finally! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Thank goodness they finally put these wonderful recipes in one book. I've had back issues piled up all around the kitchen for years now! This is an incredibly comprehensive collection of the best of SOUTHERN LIVING. The recipes are easy to follow and most won't disappoint. Throw away that Junior League cookbook and use this instead!

Also recommended: Fried Green Tomatoes (the book AND the recipe book), Jackson McCrae's Bark of the Dogwood (for a good fiction read) and the book "Grits."

Grab this book while you can! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I think what I love about these books the most is that ALL the SL recipes are in one book so you don't have a zillion magazines to go through and remember where on earth you saw that recipe you had to try. Once again, once I bought one of these, I wanted the others. These books are so very addicting because the recipes are just fabulous and very easy to prepare. My husband groans each time a new one comes in the door because he's just thinking, "oh no, there's five more pounds!" The food is just fabulous and you just can't go wrong with these recipes.

Editorial Review:

A handy compilation of every single recipe from an entire year of the magazine. All-new recipes-almost 1,000-are each tested and made foolproof by the famous Test Kitchens of Southern Living. From down-home dishes to sophisticated fare, these recipes and casual entertaining ideas have a decidedly Southern accent.

One of my favorite cookbooks! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I always go here first when I'm looking for something new, and many of our family's favorite recipes are in this book. I've given countless copies as gifts, which are always appreciated once the recipients start trying out the recipes. We discovered this treasure when my sister went to LSU years ago (we lived in Connecticut at the time), and have been grateful ever since. We also use all of the subsequent River Road editions.

Best Southern cookbook period 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am from the South. Cooking is a hobby and I collect cookbooks. I have had this book for about 30 years. In my opinion, this is the best all around Southern cookbook you can buy. In addition, it contains the best Creole recipes.

When I look through a cookbook, the first thing I check is that the ingredients are correct. It is amazing how wrong some can be. This cook book sets the standard.

There are about 3 later editions of this book which are good, but they do not compare to this, the original.

You will be more successful if you can try an authentic Creole dish before you try to make one yourself. That way you will know what you are aiming for.

Editorial Review:

River Road Recipes is the nation's #1 best-selling community cookbook series. This cookbook features classic creole and cajun cuisine. These 650 recipes include the basics like "how to make a roux". This is the "Textbook of Louisiana cooking".

Editorial Review:

A Roadfood™ Cookbook

For five years in a row, The Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle, Georgia, 40 minutes east of Atlanta, has been voted best small town restaurant in the South by the readers of Southern Living magazine. Billie and Louis Van Dyke say that no one is allowed to leave hungry, and certainly no one should after feasting on a variety of Southern salads, meats, vegetables, breads and desserts and, of course, sweet tea, the "Champagne of the South," and lemonade. Housed in a gloriously restored southern mansion, The Blue Willow Inn is home to Southern hospitality and charm at its best.

The Blue Willow Inn Cookbook offers delicious Southern recipes, vintage pictures from the early days of Social Circle, and fascinating anecdotes about the restaurant. It's a book that's wonderful for reading or for cooking.

The greatest restaurants in America are its wonderful independent regional restaurants. And there are no greater experts on America's regional restaurants than Michael and Jane Stern. "Coast to coast," said the New York Times, "they know where to find the freshest lobster rolls, the fluffiest pancakes, the crispiest catfish." Rutledge Hill Press is launching a new series of Roadfood™ Cookbooks, each with recipes, pictures, and the history of one of America's greatest regional restaurants.

One of my favorites 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is absolutely one of my favorite cookbooks. I have tried a variety of recipes - Mostaccioli Bake, French Dip, Creamy Caramels, Twice Baked Potatoes, Moist Chocolate Cupcakes with the Mocha Frosting to name a few. Many of these recipes I've made several times. The creamy caramels have become my holiday "specialty". The recipes are easy to follow and the pictures are great.

I love this book 4 out of 5 stars.
