Awesome Southern Cookbook! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just got this book not long ago and I could not be happier with it. This is definitely traditional southern food as I know it. Some reviewers implied that the recipes are laden with convenience items but as I thumb through the book-there are just as many that contain fresh or basic ingredients. I mean, let's be fair,ANY collection of over 600 Southern recipes is going to include convenience items. As for the reviewer who returned her book because the biscuit recipe contains self-rising flour instead of using baking powder, well that is just plain silly considering that self-rising flour is just a combination of flour and baking powder and has been around about 100 years. This book would be a wonderful addition to any cook's collection.

Editorial Review:

The owners of Southern Living's longtime "Best Restaurant in the South," the Blue Willow Inn, Louis and Billie Van Dyke have created the most complete and thorough Southern cookbook ever published.

It is a book that contains not only classic recipes that have been handed down for generations, but also new Southern favorites. Destined to become a classic along the lines of Betty Crocker, Fannie Farmer, and The Joy of Cooking, The Blue Willow Inn Bible of Southern Cooking will sell for years to come.

    Editorial Review:

The Classic Book on Southern Cooking

First published in 1942, Cross Creek Cookery was compiled by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at the request of readers who wanted to recreate the luscious meals described in Cross Creek -- her famous memoir of life in a Florida hamlet.

Lovers of old-fashioned, down-home cooking will treasure the recipes for Grits, Hush-Puppies, Florida Fried Fish, Orange Fluff, and Utterly Deadly Southern Pecan Pie. For more adventuresome palates, there are such unusual dishes as Minorcan Gopher Stew, Coot Surprise, Alligator-Tail Steak, Mayhaw Jelly, and Chef Huston's Cream of Peanut Soup.

Spiced with delightful anecdotes and lore, Cross Creek Cookery guides the reader through the rich culinary heritage of the deep tidal South with a loving regard for the rituals of cooking and eating. Anyone who longs for food -- and writing -- that warms the heart will find ample portions of both in this classic cookbook.

A must for any connosseur of southern colonial cooking. 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 28 people found this review helpful.

Rated by "USA Today" as one of the six all-time classic southern cookbooks. With its elegant cover and photographs and distinquished historical narrative, afficionados of the taverns of Colonial Williamsurg (especially the King's Arms Tavern, that the author was hired by the Rockefeller family to run) will gain accolades for replicating the cookbook's user-friendly American colonial recipes. Time and again, my guests have asked me to prepare the eggnog pie I made last year and the wassail. Other favorites are the game pie, Sally Lunn bread and cheese souffle. This is one of those cookbooks that everyone must have on their shelf, like "The Joy of Cooking." Also, if you don't get it here online, you've got to go all the way to Williamsburg, the only other place it's sold. I have also given "The Williamsburg Cookbook" as a gift. It is so beautiful, it could easily be an art book for the coffee table. If you are buying your first copy, I envy you the excitement you'll have on your enchanting find.

    Editorial Review:

Guests return again and again for the delicious dishes served at Colonial Williamsburg's famed taverns and restaurants Chowning's Tavern Brunswick stew, Christiana Campbell's spoon bread, Shields Tavern syllabubs. In this best-selling cookbook, 193 traditional and contemporary recipes have been compiled and adapted for the home kitchen. Commentary discusses the cooking and eating habits of our colonial ancestors. Updated and enlarged by the staff of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

A Grand Book for A Grand City 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I cried when I leafed through this book. I doubted that WS would deliver an authentic New Orleans cookbook (they might try to change stuff), but I purchased it from WS anyway to support the hurricane victims. What I received was an awesome "food pictorial." Beautiful shots of the wonderful and authentic recipes, but also beautiful photos of the restaurants, markets, streets and people I miss.

The opening paragraphs and sidebars that accompany the recipes are thoughtfully written and insightful. This book does an artful job of presenting recipes that draw on all of the cultures that make up New Orleans' cuisine. The recipes range from simple to sublime. As with all WS books, the recipes are well-written. The seafood gumbo recipe is excellent. I've shared it with family and it will be the one I use for my Christmas gumbo.

I lived and worked in the city for a while and this book makes the good memories rush back. I commend WS on the excellent research and other efforts that went into producing such a stellar book.

Good Cookbook 4 out of 5 stars.

I never been to the restaurant before but from this book I can imagine their food is great. Its full of interesting, tasting, and quality recipes. Also these recipes are made to feed large families which is good with me because I have one. My absoultey favorite recipe is the BBQ Tofu Sandwiches oh my goodness it is the best bbq sauce I have ever made and the ingredients are so simple(I must note this recipe calls for honey but I use agave and it is still good). I must add that this book is not 100% vegan some of the recipes call for cheese, butter and milk but that can be easily substituted with its vegan counterpart. All of the vegan recipes have a little V by them to make them recognizable on site. So if you are looking for good vegan food for a big family, then check this book out.

    Editorial Review:

The Grit, located in the quintessential boho town of Athens, Georgia, is known far and wide as the touring musicians' restaurant of choice. This classic cookbook features 150 of The Grit's most requested recipes, including 20 new recipes to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this famous establishment. True to its Southern roots, this hip vegetarian eatery combines soul-food sensibility with meatless cuisine, and while there are plenty of Italian, Indian, Mexican, and Middle Eastern favorites to satisfy the well-traveled vegetarian, the heart of this cuisine maintains the down-home, soul-food feeling of simple foods and classic combinations that are guaranteed to please.

Amazing 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I chose this cookbook based on reviews and WOW! My family has loved every recipe we've tried...corn pudding, pineapple/pecan upside down cake, shortning bread fried "chicken," "fish" sandwiches, apple cobbler. This is probably the best cookbook I've found in a long, long time. Fabulous food, fun, chatty style. Really innovative (I've never seen vegetarian versions of Southern food). I thought people were exaggerating when they said non-vegetarians loved certain of these dishes (yeah, not in my family, I thought) but I watched with astonishment as my husband polished off every last tofu "steak" on the platter, oblivious to the fact the rest of us wanted more--this is just not like him!

It's hardly the healthiest cookbook available--many things are fried or have tons of oil, like much traditional Southern cooking, but I've found I can reduce the fat/oil without any problems in the results (ie, The cobbler called for 2 cups of margarine (yeah, really!) but I only used 1/2 cup and it was still fabulous. Most (or all?) of the recipes are vegan. I'm not vegan, so sometimes I substitute eggs or milk, but I've also learned about new alternatives which has been fun. I adore this cookbook. Now I'm just afraid I'll never find another one I like as well!

    Editorial Review:

For a taste of life in the south, this cookbook captures all the hominess of Southern cuisine with a dose of healthful eating in recipes that are vegetarian versions of standard favorites. Included are the sumptuous vegetable and fruit dishes and baked goods that have graced Southern tables for ages. Plus recipes handed down through generations showcasing other well loved combinations of favorite foods: tomatoes and green beans, biscuits and piping gravy, watermelon and pecan pies. You'll go back to a time and place where the pace is slow and friendly, close to the earth, and full of good food.

This is a truly wonderful cookbook. It looks beautiful, is laid out well, and most importantly, has lots of terrific recipes. The recipes are not difficult, the ingredients are generally easy to find, and yet they all have that special flare that great southern cooks are known for. I'm buying a second copy to give to my sister-in-law. It is a great addition to your cookbooks and makes a great gift.

Wow! This book is beautiful! 5 out of 5 stars.

This new River Road Recipes is absolutely beautiful! The pictures are gorgeous and the text reads like a Louisiana traveloge. The recipes are new and current but still reflect the types of food people like to eat in Louisiana. Not the same old gumbo recipes but no weird ingredients you have to look up either. We are loving it.

Best cook book ever!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have had this excellent cookbook for around 2 years. I have yet to make a recipe out of the book that wasn't good. All of the recipes are wonderful, I have personally made 2/3 of the recipes in the cookbook. These recipes are excellent and a request of my family and friends when it is my turn to cook.

10 STARS FOR THIS BOOK!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have a great many cookbooks & this is what I've been searching for. I only received it this afternoon & I can't put it down! This is a book with what I call "normal" ingredients, that you don't have to substitute or forget about trying because you don't have or can't find the ingredients. I also bought the Slow Cooker Recipe & it looks like it will be close to my fingertips as well. I'm now looking to buy the Ultimate Cookbook as well as the Ultimate II. I can't wait to try these terrific books. Right now I'm recooping from complications from a broken leg & it's almost unbearable that I can't make it to the kitchen to do what I want to do. But when I do, I will be in heaven with these 3 books. IF YOU WANT GOOD DOWN-TO-EARTH RECIPES, ESPECIALLY SOUTHERN DISHES, YOU'VE GOT TO GET THIS BOOK!!!!

    Editorial Review:

John T. Edge, "the Faulkner of Southern food" (the Miami Herald), reveals a South hidden in plain sight, where restaurants boast family pedigrees and serve supremely local specialties found nowhere else. From backdoor home kitchens to cinder-block cafés, he introduces you to cooks who have been standing tall by the stove since Eisenhower was in office. While revealing the stories behind their food, he shines a bright light on places that have become Southern institutions.

In this fully updated and expanded edition, with recipes throughout, Edge travels from chicken shack to fish camp, from barbecue stand to pie shed. Pop this handy paperback in the glove box to take along on your next road trip. And even if you never get in the car, you'll enjoy the most savory history that the South has to offer.
