Outstanding! 5 out of 5 stars.

I absolutely love cookbooks and am always thrilled to be asked to review one, but this one went beyond excellence. The minute I laid eyes on this book I was impressed by the cover and the entire make-up of the book. The cover is bright, yet warm and inviting with a drawing appeal. The book is spiral and easy to open and lay out to follow the recipes inside and what a treat awaits you there.

Texas Judicial Cookbook has recipes, 59, from residing and former judges and other state and county officials. I really enjoyed looking at the pictures of the different judges and officials and seeing their favorite recipe. It was fun and interesting. However, this cookbook doesn't stop there.

Along with wonderful meal ideas you also learn about the restoration of many different courthouses across the state and see pictures of them both outside and inside. The photographs are beautifully done; put this all together and you have one top-notch cookbook that you do not want to pass by.

I highly recommend this cookbook for yourself or as a gift for someone you love. It truly has it all. I intend to sample many of the recipes that are inside and I am sure they will be a true treat for myself and my family. Very well done, exceptional work.

Editorial Review:

In 1998, Texas's county courthouses were added to the list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. When word of this reached the capital, Governor George W. Bush set forth an initiative to restore the state's landmarks. Those courthouses serve as the backdrop for the Texas Judicial Cookbook. Stunning photographs of these architectural wonders are complimented with hometown recipes from residing judges and state and county officials.

Destined to be a Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Cleora's Kitchens begins with a freedman's wagon train ride from Texas to Oklahoma for free land and opportunity in what, at the turn of the 20th century, was to be a Black and Indian state and ends with the story of one woman's remarkable life in food. This is no ordinary cookbook. It contains old recipes that could not possibly be found anywhere else and is a joyful history told in food.

Editorial Review:

When Barbara Haber, curator of Radcliffe College's 4000-volume cookbook library, was asked by The Boston Globe to name her favorite book in that famous collection, she picked Cleora's Kitchens.

Starting with a freedman's wagon ride out of Texas, Cleora Butler takes us from the beaten biscuits of her childhood, baked in a wood-burning stove, to fricasseed quail she later prepared as a caterer. Rich with stories and turn-of-the-century recipes impossible to find - Cleora's Kitchens also provides a glimpse of changing twentieth-century tastes. More than 400 recipes are arranged by the decades in which she first cooked and served them, from grandpa's sausage in the early days to the first avocado anyone in Oklahoma had ever seen. Through stories, menus, and recipes, Cleora recreates the flavor of her own remarkable history - and ours.

Ever dream of living off the land? A Taste of Nature is a guide to edible plants. This book tells you how to identify edible plants, and gives you a recipe for each plant. In addition, it is beautifully illustrated and reader-friendly.

There is more then survival in the desert. 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful concise book on edible and nonedible plants of the desert. She includes the Latin name for each plant making it easy to find out more about any one plant. Has good color plates, although I would have liked larger pictures of some of the plants.I am very glad I purchased it and I think anyone who likes seeing more in a plant then something to step on or over will enjoy it.I know I do.

A detailed and informative book. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I like the book and am glad to have it. The information is thorough. We had it with us when we went on an outing, and it made the stay even more pleasurable. I wish the drawings were detailed and colored rather than just outlines of the plants. The color plates are too dark. Aside those two things, the book is worth having.

Happy Texan 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I am often disappointed with a cookbook because the recipes are too exotic or fail to have ingredients that I already have on hand, but happily not this time. I bought this book for my sister, but after trying some of the recipes (before I gave it to her), I decided that I would just have to keep it and give her another one. I can't wait to try some more! If you like Texan/Southern cooking, this one definitely belongs in your kitchen. I particularly like the Tex-Mex section. The book is well laid out and easy to follow. I'm sure when my kids get kitchens of their own I'll want to give them a copy, until then ..... we'll just enjoy!

Editorial Review:

This classic cookbook has been a necessity for Texas chefs for 30 years. There are more than 1,500 recipes, including sections on Gulf Coast cooking, Tex Mex, and wild game dishes. This pantry cookbook is one that no cook should be without.

Sizzle Spicy Smackaroo 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Great cookbook! The recipes are easy to understand and even better tasting. Mr. Kerr has a flair for setting the mood for each of his recipes with anecdotal descriptions of how to serve and what to serve with the dish. The only drawback is sometimes the recipes call for ingredients that are not easily obtained (common grocery store), but he warns of that in the book! It's a good read and a great cookbook.

My most treasured cook book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been my bible for entertainment since I bought it at least 7 years ago. I was on business in Austin, Texas and found it in the airport book store, luckily. Homemade salsas, bbq sauces, ointments and marinades, guides to grilling and smoking all kinds of beef, chicken, pork, fish, lamb...how to make sausages, how to make pizza from scratch and cook them on the grill, how to grill sandwhiches...tons of bbq type side dishes...alchoholic and non type drinks, and special deserts. All my most favored recipes have come from this book. Not one thing I have made has been a disspointment and this book has helped me earn the reputation of being one of the best bbq entertainers around.

My personal favorites:

spicy lemon chicken
molasses mop beef ribs
avocado salsa
picadillo salsa
Western Red BBQ sauce
bbq pizza (make dough from scratch!)
smoked t bone steaks with green chile butter
marinaded and grilled mushrooms, red onions, vegetables
rosemary new potatoes
grilled sweet potatoe planks
marinaded red pepper & jalepeno Cole Slaw (no mayonaise!)
jack daniels pudding cake
pineapple tequila
pineapple tequila margaritas
Grilled peaches with walnut oil on vanilla bean ice cream

I am going from memory on the titles, but I have captured the essence. If you like to grill, or have an affinity for chips and salsa, smoked meats, spicy foods, beer or tequila..this book will not dissappoint. Even if you don't love all those things you will find killer recipes here. And hey, I don't even know the author (unfortunately) I just love this book.

Editorial Review:

The newest cookbook from the famed El Paso Chile Company offers the best in West Texas cuisine, including Hickory-Smoked Pork Chops with Red Chile-Apple Compote and Mesquite-Grilled Spareribs, along with delicious sauces and marinades, and much more. Tour.

Outstanding recipes and history 5 out of 5 stars.

I LOVE this book! Highly recommended. Great pictures and food. Very authentic to the region. Great for the home or professional chef. A nice addition to anyone's collection.

My favorite in the series !!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I now own four books from the "Beautiful Cookbook" series. This is by far my favorite. The food stylists and photographers for this particular book have raised the bar to a dizzying height. This melange of simple and upscale recipes is presented as down-to-earth...Texas-style. You can almost smell and taste the beautiful food. The stylish photos are works of art.

The recipes range from the traditional basics to "new Texas cuisine." Try to imagine a chilled "Cream of Tomatillo Soup" served in a bowl of ice...with edible flowers and herbs encased in the ice. (The ice bowl is easy to make!)

Does "Hot Crackered Texas Crab with Pecans" sound good? Or "Chili-and-Cheese Corn Husk Muffins with Pumpkin-Seed Topping"? What about "Chorizo-Stuffed Poblanos with Mango Salsa" or "Texas Hot-Pepper Shrimp with Avocado Salsa"? And for dessert, how about "Churros with Cinnamon-Pecan Ice Cream" or "Blueberry Creme Brulee with Rose Geranium"?

I could go on and on about the food and the presentation. These tempting and colorful dishes can all be made by the novice cook who enjoys the preparation.

Editorial Review:

From its wide open spaces to its rich oil wells, Texas has always been larger than life. Now this lavishly illustrated cookbook, with all new recipes and photographs, explores this expansive state whose culinary landscape is as vast and varied as its terrain. Includes over 200 mouth-watering recipes.

The Great Chefs series has long been a friend of mine. The more I read other cook books, the more I appreciate the fabulous recipes that just keep comming. You will never find yourself bored with the recipes as variety was a main ingredient. At this price, there is no way you can go wrong. There is no better value that can be obtained--BAR NONE!
