Gorgeous pictures, in depth content, delicious recipe 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I have had this book for over a year and have tried several of his recipes which all comes out great. It is one of the few cookboos that I have which I use often. The recipes are easy to follow, simple, and most important of all, delicious. I espcially like the stuffed pepper recipe. It is also a book one can sit down to read for leisure. Plus there are lots of tips, not just recipes.

He Can Write AND Cook 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful culinary book. It's more than a cookbook, as it focuses on various vegetables, etc. of the season, then uses those featured ingredients in several great recipes. If you've ever eaten at Tra Vigne in the Napa Valley town of St. Helena, you can even picture in your mind Michael in the kitchen, and almost taste the restaurant's just-pressed olive oil. If you know anyone who likes to read culinary books (like my mom, who literally reads cookbooks cover to cover, then goes back to earmark certain recipes), you should give them this book for the holidays. It is a beautiful, coffee table-quality, glossy work.

Editorial Review:

This classic cookbook from Food Network star Michael Chiarello is at last available in paperback. It's vintage Chiarello: blending simple yet sophisticated recipes from Napa Valley's famed Tra Vigne restaurant with the grace of Wine Country living and the warmth of his Italian heritage. More than 80 rustic recipes are enhanced by personal stories, detailed descriptions of how to choose ingredients for seasonal perfection and deliciousness, and Chiarello's personal philosophy of life as it relates to cooking—and feeding—those you love.

A toast to Joanne for creating her wonderful Mediterranean style recipes with wonderful wine pairings! My absolute favorite recipe is the Wine Country Flatbread with Grapes and Toasted Walnuts - so unique and a reflection of Joanne's style of using a few quality ingredients to create delicious, simple yet elegant recipes. Just cooked & baked Joanne's recipes for a dinner party and received rave reviews, especially for the Farmer's Market Risotto and the Pizza with Cherry Tomato and Basil Salad. Whether you wish to learn basic Mediterranean style recipes, or expand your culinary repertoire with some unique twists, Wine Country Cooking is sure to please your palette!

Cut Above Other Recipe Collections! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Likely you too have scanned or even invested in those recipe collections to fund a worthy effort, either not expecting to use the recipes or had to search through to find those that one even would want to attempt. Not the case with this collection of the Jr. League of Denver! And over half-a-million in print to date! You'll want one before it goes out of print!

This is large, rich colleciton that is well thought out, organized and bursts forth with uniqueness, creativity and breadth.

Some unique features are its individual sections on Colorado Wild, Mexican and HealthMark Modifications. For example, the game section using Colorado abundance of wildlife is buy a doctor who is in to this, who gives recommendations on preparing to remove gaminess and to improve flavor and maintain health.
How about Wild Pheasant Stroganoff! Indicative of the stuff you'll love finding here and trying.

Also a plus to this delight is notes which accompany most all of the recipes that tell about alternatives, serving suggestions, history where the dish came from, etc. Adds zest for us foodphiles!

One can easily see why so many other reviewers have raved about this -- it enticed me to try it. I think you will enjoy using this collection too!

This bestselling community cookbook features almost 700 triple-tested recipes reflecting Colorado's lifestyle and rich heritage.

The Best Damn Cookbook to Come out of Texas! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As an avid cook and an amateur collector of quality cookbooks, I've seen a lot of theme cookbooks like this that are often more story that recipe. This cookbook combines both and is my absolute favorite cookbook ever! The recipes are amazing (though to all of you out there counting points/carbs/calories, etc., this is probably not for you), the back story is interesting, and the knowledge expressed in these pages is priceless to anyone from an aspiring weeknight cook to the most recent C.I.A. graduate (the cooking school, not the espionage organization). In short, there's something for everyone, and everyone will love the food from this book. As I write this, I'm enjoying the buttermilk biscuits that in a few days I will make into the buttermilk biscuit pudding with Southern Comfort cream!

Editorial Review:

Grady Spears has won a real following, and garnered an IACP Julia Child Award nomination, for the updated cowboy classics at Texas's noted Reata Restaurant. From innovative Tex-Mex flavors to perfectly prepared steaks to sinfully rich desserts, this is a book for the cowboy in all of us.

High altitude bakers 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Reviewed by Kelli Glesige for Reader Views (9/2006)

Randi Levin, better known as The Muffin Lady, has written a unique cookbook with an extensive variety of baked goods adjusted for baking at high altitude. All the recipes are tried and true, old-fashioned, and have been handed down and enjoyed for several generations. Many of the recipes have been used for professional preparation over several years. The distinction of this cookbook is that it is written for scratch baking at a minimum of 4,000 feet above sea level.

The Muffin Lady shares recipes with us and gives tips on how we can adjust almost any recipe to high altitude baking. With her book, successful alterations to almost any recipe can be quite simple and fairly easy. The recipes found here can also be adapted to meet dietary needs that are sugar-free and low in fat.

"Baking at High Altitude" offers a superb variety of recipes including cakes, cookies, mountain muffins, sweet breads, fruit-filled treats, brownies, pies and strudels. Inspiring quotes are mingled throughout, and a personal note of each recipe's origin is included with each recipe. A color picture is encompassed in each chapter showcasing what the finished treats will look like when prepared, and attractive pencil drawings make the pages eye-appealing. The book also stays open nicely to a particular page so that a specific recipe can be followed and prepared.

The Muffin Lady hails from Evergreen, Colorado, which is where she was nicknamed "The Muffin Lady" by the United States Postal Employees. She frequently delivered muffins and other baked goods to the local shops in the area, and it was these individuals who helped her realize just how successful her recipes and baked goods could be. The Muffin Lady has since served such customers as the Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver, Colorado and the Wild Oats Natural Marketplace.

I recommend "Baking at High Altitude" to everyone who lives at or above 4,000 feet above sea level and who enjoys baking. If success from the oven is what you desire, your needs should be met here, for The Muffin Lady says all the recipes have been tested and perfected to insure great results. All the recipes are eye-catching and will entice you to give them a try. The Muffin Lady offers a unique quality of cookbook unlike any other I am familiar with. I encourage high altitude bakers to give it a try. I will begin by trying the recipe for Fresh Peach Cake!

Editorial Review:

No more high altitude baking disasters! Awarded Best First Cookbook in the World, Baking , offers a variety of recipes and tips for successfully baking in higher elevations and avoiding results such as flat cookies, concave cakes, and dry muffins. These phenomenal recipes have been shared and passed down through generations so that all may share in the goodness of scrumptious tasting, homemade, attractive treats; including recipes and tips designed for those with special dietary needs.

Most used Cookbook in my House! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I received this cookbook in 1997 as a bridal shower gift. I have yet to make anything that doesn't turn out well! This year I have bought if for 2 other friends who just married - and know that they will love it too! Just the Heavenly Potatoes are worth the price of the book. I also love the "pantry" section in the back of the book - comes in really handy for shopping lists - and always having the basic ingredients on hand. Highly recommend!!!

Impressive 5 out of 5 stars.

I am very impressed with this cookbook. I've lived in Colorado for nearly a decade and had seen this cookbook in lots of homes and stores. It seemed like a 'tourist' attraction... boy, was I wrong. I love this cookbook for a number of reasons. One, my food is devoured by family and friends and they actually 'ask' for my recipes! (A secret dream of mine). Secondly, my kitchen seems to be readily stocked with the items these recipes require...how often does that happen? So, I love this cookbook. I've even sent my mother-in-law recipes.... another secret dream of mine. Enjoy.

Great Cookbook for families 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I grew up eating many meals made from this cook book! And now I use it for my own family. There are great recipes that are not difficult, not time consuming, and use all the basics you already have in your kitchen. Healthy cooking too! I like the Chicken Spagetti-great for potluck dinners!

It's still the best 5 out of 5 stars.

Colorado Cache 5 out of 5 stars.

Junior League cookbooks can be a mixed bag. But generally keep in mind that they represent a community's best cooks showing off for attention.
Southern cookbooks should reflect Southern cooking traditions and so on.
Colorado Cache is a very inviting collection of newer cooking traditions, often new twists on older recipes. Great gift for newlyweds, as it reflects more recent but dependable trends in cuisine. Always keep in mind that a Jr. League cookbook has earned its price if it only generates 4 to 6 favorite recipes for you! Colorado Cache provides wonderful Denver summer and winter favorites.

Editorial Review:

From the Junior League of Denver, this classic cookbook offers a treasure trove of recipes that reflect Colorado's casual style of living and natural bounty. Features 680 delicious triple-tested recipes within a spiral-bound book with washable cover.

Editorial Review:

The West has a permanent pull on the American psyche. It's the place where the prairie meets the mountains, the mountains meet the sky, and the sky goes on forever. It's the home of our legends, our heroes and outlaws, our romanticized past.

Meredith and Tom Brokaw could feel the attraction all the way from their home in New York City. Native South Dakotans, they had settled into a frenetic Manhattan lifestyle, tempered by frequent visits to Montana, until Tom could no longer resist. He convinced Meredith to join him in buying a ranch north of Yellowstone. Meredith, in turn, convinced her friend, passionate cook Ellen Wright, to come and discover for herself the bounty of the region—its trout, bison, and elk; locally raised poultry; native fruits and vegetables. The result is Big Sky Cooking, a personal story of this Montana experience told through delicious recipes and menus, charming reflections, and glorious color photographs.

Nearly one hundred recipes, from new dishes to family standbys to reinterpreted classics, are organized into twenty menus that let you dip into the western lifestyle for any occasion: from a sunrise breakfast with eggs straight from the chicken coop to a picnic on the fly, from a rodeo dinner to a moonlight supper under the stars. The food is straightforward, unpretentious fare, as honest as Montanans and guaranteed to make every hour of the day an opportunity to enjoy the good life.

Along the way you'll be introduced to the region's charms: its slow rhythms, its work ethic, the influences of the ancient people and European settlers who formed the present-day state, the "neighbors" who live two hours away, the glow at dusk that's so extraordinary it has its own name.
