Editorial Review:

One taste of the food in Texas on the Plate and everyone will be begging for seconds--native Texan, or not! With her lively, information-packed treatise on the varied cuisine of the Lone Star State, veteran chef and culinary instructor Terry Thompson-Anderson, author of the acclaimed Cajun-Creole Cooking, has done it again--created a classic! Texas on the Plate has all the makings of a timeless cookbook. Chock full of tantalizing recipes, fascinating historical insights, and a thorough culinary exploration of the multi-dimensional population that makes up the state, Texas on the Plate promises to become a kitchen treasure. Dig in and discover why Texas on the Plate is destined to become the definitive book on Texas cooking.

From Texas Chicken-Fried Rib-Eye with Tabasco Cream Gravy to baked Oysters on the Half-Shell with Cilantro-Chili Sauce, Thompson-Anderson's spirited recipes will knock your boots off! The Executive Chef of Maner Lake Lodge, the private conference center and hunting/fishing lodge of the Halliburton Corporation, Chef Thompson-Anderson knows a thing or two about throwing a good party. In Texas on the Plate she shares her talent, serving up a host of swashbuckling, mouthwatering specialities. Chapters covering everything from "Foods For Grazing" (appetizers), to "Meat, Tame and Wild," to "The Good Stuff" (desserts) display that indefatigable Texas spirit. Texas on the Plate also offers "Soups, Salads, and Breads," details dozens of ways to handle "Things With Wings," and presents a wealth of delectable ways to get it on the plate in "If It Swims." Superlative "Sides"--delicious in their own right--haven't been forgotten. And lovers of the grape will get a unique fix from Thompson-Anderson's delightful, chapter-long tribute to Texas' fast growing wine industry. These wineries have paired their wines with selections from her book.

With recipes to suit Texans (and Texas-lovers) of every stripe, combined with an inspiring, 4-color photographic journey through the vast Lone Star State, Texas on the Plate turns every meal into a Texas-sized adventure! From 4-star, white tablecloth entries such as Roast Beef Tenderloin with Two-Mushroom Essence Sauce to updated down home Texas favorites like Slow Smoked Brisket with Hellfire and Brimstone Sauce, Thompson-Anderson delivers dishes exuding irresistible Texas appeal. Simple pleasures like Texas Toast and Chile Con Queso with Homemade Tortilla Chips are up for grabs. And distinctive Texas specialties, such as Slow-Smoked Quail on Savory Bread Pudding with Three-Chili Sauce, Wild Turkey or Deer Jerky, and Tequila-Beef Fajitas with Pico do Gallo are demystified.

Texans of the shore will appreciate Thompson-Anderson's myriad of ways for preparing Gulf Coast shrimp and oysters, while recipes for fish, among them Brazos Catfish with Crawfish Cream and Shark Steaks Grilled in Hoja Santa with Sun-Dried Tomato and Walnut Pesto, will bring out the fisherman in everyone! Urbanite adherents to the high-octane happy hour will find a handful of Texas-inspired pizzas, Wild Mushroom Nachos, and Crabmeat Quesadillas to pair with their cocktails, while entrees such as Grilled Hot Pepper Crabs with Ginger and Garlic and Roast Pheasant with Caramelized Pears on Seared Foie-Gras are equally at home for entertaining and romantic dinners for two.

From beginning to end, Texas on the Plate does just what its title says it will. This fabulous cookbook brings all the flavors of the Lone Star State--flavors old and new, cowboy and cosmopolitan, German, Mexican, Vietnamese and more--to the table, and piles them up on the plate with true, undeniably Texan style!

Beautiful but Labor Intensive 3 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Anyone who has eaten at Roy's will undoubtedly get excited at the prospect of making something out of this book. The layout alone will be inspiring with all the beautiful pictures of Hawaii and the food itself. However, novices beware, this is not cooking 101. There is quite a bit of prep for most recipes - sauces that need to be made requiring a multitude of ingredients before you even get to the core of the recipe - resulting in hours of work. I could see this being ok in a restaurant environment where many of these things are made in advance and put together on order, but for the haole home cook it is a little much. Additionally, I have never been that happy with the results of my labor. My husband and I are fairly good cooks and always look at each other as we ponder why it is just not as good as we think it should be. Maybe it is missing the view of Molokini, I don't know.

Editorial Review:

A feast for the eyes as well as the palate, this is the ultimate presentation of the exquisite flavors of Hawaii and the Pacific Rim. Boldly reinventing Hawaiian cuisine, award-winning chef Roy Yamaguchi emphasizes exotic seafood and fresh island ingredients, while borrowing techniques and flavors from European and Asian cooking. With favorites like Ahi Tartare with Crispy Polenta and Teriyaki Duck Salad with Candied Pecans and Papaya, this landmark book will help home cooks savor the tastes of the tropics no matter where they live.

Years of never-fail, delicious-tasting food 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I've had this cookbook and SF Encore ever since they were first published and have made many recipes from both cookbooks. Not one has failed to meet expectations. One caveat, however. This cookbook is meant for people who know their way around a kitchen, not for beginniners. Since I've been cooking for a very long time, this was no problem. These two cookbooks are well worn and often-used. I recommend both very highly.

Wonderful food in every page! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

If ever there is a "must have" cookbook, this one wins hands-down! I am usually pleased with a cookbook if there are 5 recipes that are savers---I have made over 50 from SF a la Carte and not been disappointed. Every page has scrumptious recipes whether a main course, hors d'oeuvre, or dessert. I own cookbooks from around the world, but this is my favorite and I am thrilled to see it once more in publication! Now I can treat my best friends to this treasure and they will no longer have to ask me for recipes.

A compilation of other cookbooks 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I have very mixed feelings about this cookbook.

I gather from the introduction that this is one of a series based on visiting different states and putting together a cookbook to "preserve their food heritage". How the authors plan on summarizing the entire culinary experience of a state with such an interesting history, mix of races, and emphasis on FOOD is answered by what you get: a compilation of other cookbooks. So on the plus side, many of their sources are really good. (The entire Honpa Hongwanji series are great and are in my mother's, grandmother's, aunt's, etc collection. They're sort of dated, but have a lot of classic everyday food.) On the negative side taking a few recipes from other recipe collections gives you very little coherence, understanding of where that recipe came from (time period or heritage), or understanding of the ingredients. Plus, the selection of these recipes are just sort of strange. Spicy Garlic Eggplant and Pork (pg 128) and Spicy Szechuan Eggplant (pg 100) are basically the same recipe with minor changes from 2 different cook books. Several recipes are for poke, but the authors don't seem to realize they're related, or, at least, don't explain what it is. I have to wonder if they actually cooked these recipes at all or just leafed through the other books.

Pictures are chosen to be more atmospheric with tourist photos of the authors, scenic places, and some line drawings (not of the food). The photos of people in "native garb" (at tourist sites) also contrast with the recipes, which are largely modern pot luck sort of food. (In particular, there's a cringe-worthy vintage photo near the front that must be just for nostalgia's sake because no one I know in Hawaii would be caught dead looking like that.)

Besides the food, there are also little tidbits of information peppered through the book that are supposed to give you an idea of island life. My question: Who exactly told the authors that curry is often served at parties? What a strange generalization. They also commit the faux-pas in the preface of calling their friend a second generation Hawaiian. Hawaiians are like American Indians; you can't call yourself one just because you've moved somewhere.

So, there are definitely some good recipes in here. It's just that you stumble upon things that are just plain wierd if you're from Hawaii.

Editorial Review:

Want to... prepare the popular Huli Huli Chicken... bake delicious Coconut Macadamia Nut Crisps... learn all about cooking Oven Kalua Pig an dall the other traditional lu'au recipes? Now you can! This cookbook will introduce you to all these wonderful native dishes, plus many more. Scattered among the recipes are fascinating facts and photos that capture Hawaii's unique history and culture.

Over 300 favorite recipes from sixty-three of Hawaii's leading cookbooks make up this extraordinary collection. These contributing cookbooks are listed in a special section along with ordering information - a treasure for anyone who collects cookbooks.

A very lovely cookbook full of recipes for delicious dishes. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This exciting cookbook presents a sampling of the artist's Georgia O'Keefe's favorites dishes. The author worked for Ms. O'Keefe for several years. The recipes are not complicated. I have made several of the dishes and all have been delicious! I highly recommend this book! Doug Moring

O'Keeffe lovers should like this book a lot 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As a fan of Ms. O'Keeffe's since the seventies and even more so once the late Ansel Adams befriended our young son in the eighties, I wanted this cook book because I loved the simplicity of her art work and wanted to see if this carried over into her food choices. Am not disappointed.

Yes, many of the recipes are simple and direct like corn on the bob or kale. But the recipes for Fried Flowers (locust blossoms), Curried Chicken, Biscochitos, and Zabaglione are wonderful. Even wonder if she ever had squash blooms tempura style.

The book is a fun read as well, since the Introduction allows us to learn why she liked certain foods, disliked eating out, what she grew in her large vegetable gardens and how her kitchens were laid out and what they had in them.

Editorial Review:

Besides containing photographs and recipes from Miss O'Keeffe's kitchen, the book describes in charming detail Miss O'Keeffe's outlook on food, philosophy, life, art, and the world.

Don't bother. 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Me and my wife moved to Colorado from sea level, and were big bakers using Betty Crocker baking books. We have tried many of the recipes in this book and have yet to come across one that tastes even halfway decent. We live at 9100 feet, and there are many recipes in the book that don't require any further adjustments for higher altitudes (so they say), and we've tried a few of the cake and cookie recipes, but none of them worked, the cakes flopped, and the cookies always flattened out completely. It was hit or miss with this book, and that's aside from the awful taste of the recipes. They claim that all the recipes will work to 6500 ft elevation, and higher altitudes require further changes, but even making the changes they have in the book under the recipe's, a lot of the recipes failed.
Save your money and get any baking book and make adjustments for high altitude, using any of the adjustments you can readily find on-line for your altitude.
We were very disappointed in this cookbook.

Cowgirl Perfection! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Cowgirl's Cookbook: Recipes for Your Home on the Range - It's the cutest little cowgirl book ever.

This book has the most authentic recipes a cowgirl (or cowboy, in my case) could ever want. The photos inside are fantastic as well.

It's only ten bucks or so, so buy one for you and one for your mom. You won't be sorry, I promise.

Made me hungry 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Good books are good because they have a rhythm, a flow, that connects parts. That is no easy chore in a recipe book, but Ms. Stanford's side bars and personal comments create that flow. I cannot cook, but I have read the book with pleasure, and it made me hungry. I am going ask my grandchildren to fix me stuff. The photos and Western connection certainly added to pleasure of reading.

Editorial Review:

Filled with fun recipes and nostalgic looks back at the heyday of the cowgirl era, this book celebrates the wild women of the Old West. From "Fit for a Queen Green Chili Soup" to "Cowgirl Margaritas," Cowgirl's Cookbook is fun to puruse and to will be excellent to use for a cowgirl-themed girls night or campout.

excellent recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I own hundreds of cookbooks, and I like to cook. The recipes in this volume and in the first volume, called A Private Collection, are delicious and reliable. The instructions are easy to follow and the results impressive in appearance and flavor. If you need a few recipes to cook when you really want to impress someone, use these cook books. You won't fail.

A delight for many senses - taste, touch and sight 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I received my copy of Private Collection today and I've just ordered another copy of this delightful cookbook as a Christmas gift for a dear friend. The recipes are elegant - the Avocado Crab Mornay sang on our tongues tonight. It isn't just the food that sings in this cookbook, the paper begs to be touched, and the illustrations are exquisite.

Come to this gem time and time again 5 out of 5 stars.

Bonnie Mickelson, the editor, was promoting this little book at I. Magnin's in San Francisco in 1980 and I am so grateful that I happened to be in the store that day. I purchased copies for my mother and myself having a soft spot for Junior League cookbooks. This one is very good. While slight with only 110 recipes, they are well chosen and have been tested. It has been over 25 years since I bought this book and I still turn to it--especially for entertaining for large crowds. The Beef Bourguignon for 24 is easy and very good. Easier than Julia Child's and just as good. Serving it with Hungarian Noodles, as suggested, always gets raves and requests for the recipe. The Barley and Pine Nut Pilaf is easy and wonderful with beef and lamb. The Frozen Mocha Mousse made with ladyfingers, which turns it into a charlotte, is very, very good and serves a large crowd and is impressive to look at. There was a follow-up volume that I suspect is a collection of recipes that just didn't seem good enough to make it the first time around. I use that book too, but not as often. The drawings by Linda Newberry are very charming.

SPAM no ka oi! 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

When I first moved away from Hawaii in 1995, my grandmother gave me this book to take along with me to Japan. In Japan, the SPAM there still has the "key" to open the cans. Anyway, I used several of the recipes such as: "SPAM MUSUBI", "Korean Style SPAM", and "Sato Shoyu SPAM" and introduced them to my Japanese colleagues who immediately fell in love with SPAM. I told my Japanese colleagues to visit 7-11 in Hawaii to see that SPAM MUSUBI is even sold there!! Now I live in Indiana where SPAM is well, not as popular as it is back in Hawaii. I have brought SPAM MUSUBI to work where my new colleagues have frowned in disbelievement, but after they tried it, they did not have a bad thing to say about this ingenious SPAM creation. Ms. Kondo Corum's book is well written and provides a glossary of unfamiliar terms for the non-Hawaii person. Besides SPAM, she also covers some other local island favorites such as: vienna sausages, corned beef, and sardines. The recipes and instructions are easy to read and the meals are easy to prepare. The artwork adds to the appeal of the recipes. If you love SPAM and would like to get recipes that you would normally not find here in the 48 states, this is your book!

Editorial Review:

Humorously illustrated recipes for Hawaii's favorite luncheon meat, as well as sardines, corned beef, and vienna sausage.
