Delicious recipes and reliable information 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The copy of the book I purchased was a present for one of my children. I have used the California Heritage Cookbook for 20 years. Every recipe I have made was good--to the extent that I do not hesitate to serve what appears to be a truly strange combination of ingredients to company. My favorite cookbook (and I collect cookbooks).

Best cookbook ever! 5 out of 5 stars.

I received this cookbook in the hardback edition from a friend back in 1980. I have used and used it over and over again. There are many favorites that I have used again and again; the Tahoe Brunch and Lasagne, to name only two. Buy it an see for yourself!!

California Heritage Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you so much for the cookbook. I received it in a timely manner and it was in perfect condition. What a wonderful way to receive a book that was impossible to find before.

Yum yum! 5 out of 5 stars.

Greatest Cookbook ever 5 out of 5 stars.

This cookbook was given to me when it was first published. I have used it ever since and today the cover has finally fallen off but it is still very much in use.

I haven't prepared a recipe in here that isn't fantastic. The presentation always amazes guests as they think whatever is made took hours and hours.

Like others have said, the recipes are not that difficult and stand the test of time.

Good overview of Central Coast wines 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Let me start by saying that I am a little biased toward this book because the photograph on the cover is the view from my parents' living room. I did not take the picture but the oak tree and the grapevines in that picture have been a familiar sight for many years. This is a good overview of the wines and wineries of the Central Coast. It is a good place to start to build your own "Sideways" trip. I have my favorites as I am sure others have theirs. The Central Coast is often overlooked by many as a serious wine country but those who actually know what they are talking about know this region as the real wine country in California, not our Napa neighbors up north.

Editorial Review:

In comparative tastings, wines from California's Central Coast rival those from such renowned regions as Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Napa, yet they also offer superb value. This is the first comprehensive guide to one of the world's most dynamic and beautiful wine regions-and the setting for the award-winning movie Sideways. An excellent, one-stop resource for touring and tasting at convenient wineries located from Monterey to Santa Barbara, the guide is organized into county-by-county alphabetical listings for this up-and-coming region.

Wines and Wineries of California's Central Coast includes:
* Profiles of nearly 300 wineries personally visited by the author
* Profiles of individual vintners
* 5 maps
* Winery ratings, plus author and winemaker recommendations
* Visitors' and contact information for each winery
* Discussions of regional wine history and terroir
* Descriptions of designated American Viticultural Areas and grape varietals

Fun History 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Little known history of the day of the railroads, especially of the Santa Fe and the Harvey Houses along the way. Fun to read and recipes too!

Editorial Review:

Entrepreneur Fred Harvey began establishing high-quality dining rooms along the Santa Fe Railway in 1876. His Harvey Houses helped change the entire picture of the American West. The Harvey House Cookbook recaptures the spirit of the first western rail excursions with 200-plus vintage recipes, many simple to prepare; numerous period photos; and the story of Fred Harvey himself.

Editorial Review:

A writer and photographer's adventures through small-farm California

Writer William Emery and photographer Scott Squire embarked on an adventure through California's Central Valley in search of a different way of life. They sought the secrets of people engaged in the production of their own food and drink.

What is life like for small-time farmers? Can they make a living off of what they produce? Do they enjoy what they do? And most importantly, does their food taste any better than what we find in supermarkets?

What Emery and Squire discovered was revelatory. In the pages of Edges of Bounty they sample produce that is nothing short of divine. They encounter melons so swollen that they burst open with one knife cut.

They are introduced to the sour flavor of cactus pads and the healing bitterness of Mien bitter balls. Emery catches his first fish in twenty years.

The beekeepers, cheese makers, butchers, fishermen, dairymen, fruit farmers, and other edibilists--the word Emery coins to describe them--who invited them into their homes take pride in their expertise and in nurturing what farmer Mike Madison at one point calls guerilla agriculture.

Thoughtful, quirky, and brimming with the color and anthopological depth of Squire's photography, Edges of Bounty delights us with a back-to-land narrative as fresh and tangy as homemade goat cheese.

Emery and Squire come away from the edible valley not just with bushels of produce but with faith in endeavors that are small and local and close to our hearts.

Delightful Local Flavor Cooking Guide 4 out of 5 stars.

Portland's Palate is full of local-favorite recipes incorporating northwest seafood, cheese, fruits and vegitables, et.al. Every recipe is a new adventure. Friends and family have requested copies for themselves.

A "deliciously"beautiful cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to cook or even for people that are just learning to cook. The recipies vary from very simple to some that are more complicated. It is a beautiful cookbook and suitable to give as a gift. I have tried many of the recipies in it and have loved each of them. I love cookbooks and this is by far one of my favorites!

Yummy Recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful cookbook with easy to follow recipes. The book definitely takes advantage of the fruits and vegetables that are available throughout the year. There are a variety of recipes to choose from and the ones I've gotten the best reviews from are the crab dip, carrot cake, and clam chowder. My only complaint about this book is that many of the recipes are very heavy and involve using cream, sour cream, cream cheese, butter, mayonaise, etc. Not the healthiest of ingredients, but the food sure does taste good.
