The best cookbook I own; fabulous, fabulous! 5 out of 5 stars.

I borrowed my mother's copy of this book...and still haven't given it back. If you've ever wanted to know how to make the perfect Jewish chicken soup, matzoh balls, brisket, yummy chicken dishes, and the perfect kugel, this book will be your guide. Haven't figured out that perfect dish to bring to the potluck? This book's got plenty of delectable ideas! I've been frustrated with other Jewish cookbooks that offer confusing recipes with strange ingredients, but this one keeps everything simple and delicious. It's by far the cookbook I turn to most during the week and when guests come over. This book also includes a large array of kosher Chinese recipes (from sweet & sour chicken to kung pao chicken & beef). We are not kosher, but love all the recipes nonetheless.

The Best Kosher Cookbook You'll Ever Need 5 out of 5 stars.

Terrific traditional and contemporary cooking, with a lighter California twist. THIS IS THE BEST KOSHER COOKBOOK -- MAYBE THE BEST COOKBOOK OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER -- THAT YOU MIGHT EVER OWN. Every recipe works, because the people who put it together genuinely triple-tested each entry, and if it didn't get A-plusses from all three cooks, it didn't get in. I probably own 50 cookbooks, and this is one of the top three I use! Try the chocolate marble squares, the sesame chicken, the apricot noodle kugel, the gefilte fish, the chicken soup, the honey cake . . .

Its....cute..... 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I got this as a gift and it has its good and bad points. First, its small (plam sized paperback) that is quite attractive. Front of an artichoke on the front cover, back of one on the back. It is put out by the California Artichoke Advisory Board...who knew there was even such a thing?) Because of that the beginning of the book is full of intersting artichoke history, arichoke lore, basics, prep tips, cooking techniques, eating hints and nutrition facts. More than I have seen in cook books of 1000 pages.

There are 21 recipes that run the gamut of sauces for the chokes to entrees where they are the main ingredient. There are good discriptions for the recipes, altho no pictures. Some cute line drawings of artichokes. None of which, thankfully, fall into the walking vegetable catagory.

Risotto with artichokes was very good, but risotto is a hard dish for me and i think it needed a bit more explaination. I tried it twice once it was too hard and once it was too gooey. The problem wasnt exactly the recipe, more my problem with correctly making a risotto but the directions didnt help all that much. The artichoke frittata was excellent.

The book is really a bit too small to to just lie flat on the counter and refer to comfortabley. It snaps shut and if you try to get it to lie flat the binding will break. On the other hand its very inexpensive so its really a minor design flaw for the price.

I can't really imagine having bought this myself. Its a bit too small to be practical for me..but as a gift, perhaps as part of a theme basket. Especially a gourmet or italian themed basket with olive oil, pasta, dried basil, garlic braids..etc. this would be an excellent and inexpensive addition

Editorial Review:

The folks at the California Artichoke Board have developed 40 mouth-watering recipes for this versatile, fat-free, low-sodium, 25-calorie culinary star. From an Artichoke Lasagna to Baby Artichoke Saute to Focaccia-Stuffed Artichokes, Monterey County's finest never disappoints. Die-cut.

Entertaining as well as tastey 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I once bought this book at a Ranch in the South Dakota Black Hills. It has since been misplaced, so I just ordered a replacement copy. The book was outstanding, as the recipe's were framed in vivid historical anecdotes about how they fit into everyday Cowboy life. As you prepare dishes, you can almost envision the Cowboys hungrily waiting! Most of the recipes are also delicious!

Rceipes the way they were originally done 4 out of 5 stars.

A wonderful set of recipies that show how they do, and did, cooking on the ranch and trail. Many of the recipies include background material about their origin. Especially interesting were the western and cowboy lore interspersed througout the book.

Editorial Review:

Trail Boss's Cowboy Cookbook includes 458 recipes from 24 states and 8 countries. Not just a meat-and-potatoes cookbook, this collection of authentic rangeland dishes and the historical notes behind them will surprise and satisfy everyone from seasoned gourmets to casual cooks. My favorite cookbook on the shelf! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I spent a lovely weekend on the coast and happened upon CAFE BEAUJOLAIS. After a splended meal, I purchased an autographed copy of this book. The recipes are all easy to follow and each have a history or source. Her spicy buttermilk coffee cake is to die for! Ms. Fox speaks of her cookbook collection and how she "looks up" the same recipe in many different cookbooks. This is where I first understood the concept of recipe comparing. I also enjoyed reading about the goings-on in her resturant. This is a fabulous book!

yummmmmy 5 out of 5 stars.

The recipes in this book are great, especially the tomato soup and chicken salad (Chinese). I really liked the simple way in which they were written and the use of readily available ingredients. My favorite part of the book was all the minutae about the restaurant itself. From starting a restaurant, to running it, to buying provisions, to personnel, the book was a fascinating inside look at the business of food. The authors never complained, but they made me realize what a tough business they are in. Hope I can visit Cafe Beaujolais sometime.

The Foodie was right! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I read Jonathan Reynolds' article in the NYTimes Magazine--an interview with a wacky-but-wonderful foodie whose current favorite cookbook is Hollywood du Jour, so I sent for it. It's great. I love the recipes, but the lore of these extinct Hollywood restaurants is great reading. I immediately sent one to my mother who had fond memories of the Brown Derby, Coconut Grove and Bullock's Wilshire, since she spent most of her young adult years in L.A. She always talked about grapefruit cake and Goodwin has the recipe--and the original Cobb Salad. If you collect cookbooks, take it from Alan Davidson, Foodie and gourmet historian and winner of the 2003 Praemium Erasmianum award for contributions to European culture, society and social sciences-"a very good book". I say 5 stars!

Tick Tock's Sticky Orange Rolls 4 out of 5 stars.

Having grown up near most of the restaurants I thoroughly enjoyed reading the history contained in this book. The sticky orange buns from Tick Tock are now part of Sunday brunches at home.

Interesting! 5 out of 5 stars.

I gave this book to my daughter's father-in-law since his dad was the matre d at Chasens for years. He thoroughly enjoyed reading the recipes and memories. He remembers a lot of the recipes and now can cook them himself!

FANTASTIC! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I LOVE this book. It is great fun to see the Sinatras' and other celebrities' favorite dishes, especially the little explanatory anecdotes that precede many of them.

I have only tried one recipe so far (Pat Boone's Grammy's Chili Mac) -- but that, alone, was well worth the entire price of the book. (After tasting it, I readily understand why Clark Gable loved it so much.)

Right now, I'm ordering three copies to send as gifts.

GREAT COOKBOOK 5 out of 5 stars.

I LOVE THIS COOKBOOK. IT HAS ALOT OF NICE EASY RECIPES, AND I DISPLAY IT IN MY KITCHEN BECAUSE I WANT FRANK TO ALWAYS BE A PART OF MY LIFE. HE HAS SANG HIS WAY INTO MY HEART AND SOUL AND HE FEELS LIKE A FRIEND. I LOVE THIS COOKBOOK. MAY HE REST IN PEACE UNTIL WE GET TO HEAR HIM SING IN HEAVEN AGAIN.
