My favorite cookbook yet! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have a million cookbooks, and am a food network addict. This is by far the best cookbook. It has pics to go with every recipe as well. There aren't a huge amount of recipes, but what they have is all delicious. I don't think theyre extremely FAST to make though. Some still have a lot of prep work. But that's fine for me.... I make some of these recipes when I have company and it's always a huge hit! I definitely think everyone should own this cookbook!

Above average 4 out of 5 stars.

This book has lots of great recipes that are fairly easy to make. Each recipe gives serving ideas as well as what side items can be paired with each dish. The only con for this book is that many of the recipes call for somewhat exotic ingredients (orzo, ground ginger, chipotle chile, fresh rosemary, etc.) that most people wouldn't already have in the house. If you don't mind the extra trip to the grocery store, then this is a great tool.

Great Gift! 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this for quite a few men for Christmas. It is a hit and the recipes are very simple and taste good. The other plus is that most are pretty healthy too. I like that it is a board book, much like what you would get for an infant that chews on books. If the men spill on the book they can easily wipe it clean. Great for teaching little men how to do their first cooking projects. Highly recommend.

Editorial Review:

The latest entry in the A Man, a Can series returns with more easy recipes for great, guy-friendly food.

When award-winning cookbook author/editor David Joachim introduced the A Man, a Can series in 2002 with A Man, a Can, a Plan, readers and reviewers alike were quick to embrace the winning premise: quick, tasty, healthful meals based on canned and other convenience foods. "This cookbook makes meals guys would love," raved the Philadelphia Daily News. "A foolproof, not to mention spill-proof, guide to manly success in the kitchen," exclaimed the Sunday Star-Ledger.

Now David Joachim is back with 50 new tempting recipes for hungry guys everywhere—hearty, healthy fare such as Chili Empanadas, Noodlicious Ramen Salad, Cheez-It Crusted Chicken, Pesto Salmon Pitas, and more. With step-by-step instructions and full-color photographs, even the most culinarily challenged dudes can whip up dishes that will have diners eager for more.

Good old fashioned vegetarian cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I own dozens of vegetarian cookbooks, old and new, but I find myself returning to this one again and again. I consider it my "vegetarian comfort food cookbook". Published long before we all developed fat phobia, this book contains rich, flavorful foods. Lots of dairy, so not the best for vegans, but meat lovers won't miss the meat.

Editorial Review:

The New Laurel's Kitchen includes plenty of simple, beat-the-clock recipes - who doesn't need them? But it refuses to blur the distinction between natural foods and fast foods. If you need forty-five minutes to bake a potato or cook brown rice, fine. That's good, solid wind-down time, precious in today's hurried world: time to cut up green beans, or prepare a cauliflower curry; time for the children to dry the lettuce and help make an Appley Bread Pudding. Laurel's kitchen has its own pace - a human pace, that lets other things happen besides just dinner. Good health is the first concern here, and foods that support it are rendered irresistible: dishes like Mushrooms Petaluma, Poppyseed Noodles, Lazy Pirogi, and Sebastapol Pizza. These are well-tested and innately manageable recipes, homespun, but with a generous splash of the sophistication that has swept the food world in recent years.

NOT GLUTEN-FREE 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

There are other great books out there that explore eating healthy whole foods that are gluten and dairy-free. This book is unfortunately not gluten-free. I have 2 sons with ADHD who are on the GF / CF diet. I was hoping this book would provide some new recipes for our family - there are some that we have found - but most of them take a while to prepare. Two of my favorite books are The Gluten-Free Vegan: 150 Delicious Gluten-Free, Animal-Free Recipes and The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook: Whole Foods Recipes for Personal and Planetary Health. Both books have tons of healthy recipes that are gluten, dairy, and egg-free!

Editorial Review:

When the Aleppian Jewish community migrated from the ancient city of Aleppo in historic Syria and settled in New York and Latin American cities in the early 20th century, it brought its rich cuisine and vibrant culture. Most Syrian recipes and traditions, however, were not written down and existed only in the minds of older generations. Poopa Dweck, a first generation Syrian–Jewish American, has devoted much of her life to preserving and celebrating her community's centuries–old legacy.

Dweck relates the history and culture of her community through its extraordinary cuisine, offering more than 180 exciting ethnic recipes with tantalizing photos and describing the unique customs that the Aleppian Jewish community observes during holidays and lifecycle events. Among the irresistible recipes are:

•Bazargan–Tangy Tamarind Bulgur Salad

•Shurbat Addes–Hearty Red Lentil Soup with Garlic and Coriander

•Kibbeh–Stuffed Syrian Meatballs with Ground Rice

•Samak b'Batata–Baked Middle Eastern Whole Fish with Potatoes

•Sambousak–Buttery Cheese–Filled Sesame Pastries

•Eras bi'Ajweh–Date–Filled Crescents

•Chai Na'na–Refreshing Mint Tea

Like mainstream Middle Eastern cuisines, Aleppian Jewish dishes are alive with flavor and healthful ingredients–featuring whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and olive oil–but with their own distinct cultural influences. In Aromas of Aleppo, cooks will discover the best of Poopa Dweck's recipes, which gracefully combine Mediterranean and Levantine influences, and range from small delights (or maza) to daily meals and regal holiday feasts–such as the twelve–course Passover seder.

Often Recommended 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Conscious Eating was required reading for me when I was studying for my Bachelors Degree in Holistic Nutrition. Up until that time I had never heard of the book or the author. How grateful I am in retrospect that this was a book I studied. The approach taken is varied and diverse. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Enzymes and the importance of maintaining a proper pH. The information in these chapters has influenced several nutritional supplement products that I have had the privilege to formulate (Enzymedica). Of special interest to me was the research the author did through his clinic on vegetarian and non vegetarian diets and the surprising results he discovered when measuring the individuals pH. It was not what I expected and so it has given me greater insight on the topic.

I always recommend this book to individuals looking for an well balanced approach to overall health.
