I Am Grateful: Recipes and Lifestyle of Cafe Gratitude 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The recipes provide new healthy choices for tasty meals. But more importantly, their philosophy of being grateful provides a basis for a healthy life. I highly recommend this book. I also recommend another book by the authors titled, "Sacred Commerce: Business As A Path of Awakening".

Editorial Review:

With locations in San Francisco, Berkeley, Marin, and Los Angeles, Café Gratitude has become well known for its inspiring environment and distinctive, flavorful organic foods. In I Am Grateful, cofounder Terces Engelhart presents her and her husband Matthew’s view of life and business philosophy. She also presents her story of personal healing, sharing highlights of her recovery from food addiction while explaining the benefits of a raw lifestyle. The book’s gorgeous, full-color photographs accompany easy-to-follow recipes for the café’s most popular items, making it easy for readers to prepare live foods at home. Recipes include café favorites such as the “I Am Luscious” raw chocolate smoothie, “I Am Bountiful” bruschetta, “I Am Elated” spicy rolled enchiladas, and “I Am Amazing” lemon meringue pie with macadamia nut crust.

Disappointed 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I was a little disappointed with this cookbook. I think most of the recipes are pretty generic as they call for all of the 'normal' ingredients of the recipes, but just add "gluten-free" to the title of the ingredient. It wouldn't take a genius to take already used recipes and convert them to GF just by substituting the ing. I don't know exactly what I was expecting but this wasn't it....

Not Too Hot 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book would give quick easy Gluten free meals....I gave me quick meals that were typical junk foods (Kids foods) that were Gluten free versions....thats not what I cook for my children. More pictures would have been nice too....Gluten free foods often look different than regluar foods....I guess thats why pictures were excluded!!!!!!!!!

Great Starter Cookbook for Celiacs 4 out of 5 stars.

If, however, you are looking for a great starter cookbook that has a great number of quick easy recipes that taste good, then don't hesitate to buy this book. Everything is written for kids, so it's easy to follow and the recipes are super easy and quick. It covers everything from drinks, desserts, to all the staples like dinner, appetizers, and such.

Editorial Review:

One out of every 133 people in the United States has celiac disease. And countless others are giving up wheat for general health concerns. These books provide taste-tested recipes for delicious meals and desserts that are all wheat-and gluten-free.

Great reading but the recipes will bog you down 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I have a lot of heart trouble and I bought this cookbook specifically to look into The Mediterranean Diet as a means to benefit my precarious health. I cook a lot, every day, as I'm retired and it's my job to prepare a balanced suppertime meal for my wife and me each day -- she's still working full-time and, of course, she's pretty hungry when she comes through the door each evening. (If you want to see what my own chefing skill-level is, go to "Recipezaar" and look up "Bone Man" -- that's me and I have about 300 recipes posted there that you can view and/or print for free).

This cookbook is intelligently written, bulging with great and useful advice, and details of The Mediterranean Diet are clearly stated therein; however, one would be very hard-pressed to complete all the tasks which go with owning a home and raising a family, and balancing that burden with cooking the dishes found in here.

These are, in fact, fine recipes (I've made several of them), but my point is, they're too complex and ingredient-diverse to pull off every day and that objective is sort of the purpose of any particular diet. An example of the problem is that sometimes, one recipe refers you to yet another recipe, on a different page, for preparation. Another evaluation is that one would need to go to the grocery at least every other day as this author uses a LOT of different ingredients -- while conforming nicely to The Mediterranean Diet requirements, these recipes are very diverse in regard to ingredients. A final comment is that these dishes are not largely all that cheap to make and, over time, this becomes a problem for many of us.

One other criticism I have is that, while the book is nicely bound, it's inappropriately bound for a cookbook. It's fairly large and it doesn't lie flat. The paper is not of a "slick" variety and it's of a type of paper that seems to absorb every splash and stain that gets near it. All this is really just a minor complaint but I think that this was a huge oversight on the part of the publisher and certainly represents an inconvenience for the home cook.

So, my summary is this: if you have a helper in the kitchen who can also go to the grocery for you on short notice, this cookbook might be okay. I would also say that the recipes are quite worthwhile for folks (even non-dieters) who wish to prepare one of these dishes just once in awhile -- but to stick to the recipes herein, day after day, would be notably difficult and costly.

Editorial Review:

Discussing the nutritional and health benefits of Mediterranean culinary practices, this delectable cookbook presents two hundred recipes for simple traditional dishes from all over the region, all adapted for the modern American kitchen.

A Truly Lovely Addition to your Cookbook Collection with a minor exception. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I love this book. Not just for the recipes but for the clean design and beautiful photographs. Everything about this book makes you want to use it over and over.

I do have one word of caution. Her miso soup recipe calls for you to boil the miso. She makes an effort to explain how beneficial miso is for your health but unfortunately, boiling miso destroys all of the good enzymes.

Add it at the end by turning off the heat, mix in your miso, and wait a few minutes before serving. Heat activates the enzymes but, again, boiling will destroy them.

Aside from this small detail, it is one of my favorites amoung my vast collection of cookbooks.

Editorial Review:

No, there is no chicken stock in this soup. What you'll find here is page after glorious page of the loveliest, most delicious soups and stews - each and every one entirely vegetarian. Brimming with international flavors, Paulette Mitchell's easy-to-follow recipes are paired with unique accompaniments, garnishes, and toppings that add tremendous visual appeal. Witness hearty Pumpkin Stew baked and served in a pumpkin shell; classic onion soup updated with crunchy goat cheese toasts; and Spicy Sweet Potato-Ancho Bisque swirled with bright Roasted Red Pepper Cream. From Mediterranean Saffron Stew to Greek Spinach and Orzo Soup, these colorful dishes are simple enough for every day, yet sophisticated enough for elegant dinner parties. Instructions for making tasty vegetable stock from scratch, a selection of delicious vegan soups, and a helpful "tips" section make this gorgeous cookbook an important addition to any kitchen where good food and good health are on the menu.

Must Have Tough Skin 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book was good and provided a lot of information, but the authors were in my opinion, a bit too judgemental. Ive been a vegetarian for years and have been a vegan only a few months. It has been a challenge for me with determining whether a product has animal by-products. The authors make you feel like the worst person in the world if you call yourself a vegan and accidently eat a by product. They really hard core put you down if you are not a "perfect vegan" which earlier in the book they praised people for trying. Towards the end of this book it turned into a "BASH ALL THE VEGANS WHO ARE TRYING BUT MIGHT NOT BE 100% YET" which turned me more off to veganism than on. So, if you do not have tough skin, do not read this book.

Editorial Review:

Curious about veganism? Want to be a vegan? Already a vegan? Just wondering how to be vegan without going insane? Loaded with tips, advice, stories, and comprehensive lists of resources that no vegan should live without, this book is key to helping you thrive as a happy, healthy, and sane vegan in a decidedly non-vegan world. Witty, opinionated, and eminently useful.
