The first cookbook from best-selling author Jonny Bowden!

Jonny Bowden's The Healthiest Meals on Earth contains recipes for more than sixty dishes and drinks that use nutritious and healthy cooking methods. Forty of these dishes will combine to create ten different "poly-meals", specially crafted meals that contain key nutrients found to promote long-term health. They include Sweet and Thai Spicy Shrimp and Fruits, Persian Chicken with Autumnal Accompaniments, and the "iron booster" of Tender Calf's Liver and Sweet Beets. A "Healthiest Holiday Meal" features Citrus Stuffed Turkey, Zippy Fruit Salsa, and Sweet Potato Pie. The poly-meals are designed to be eaten three-to-five times a week.

Another ten recipes are not part of the poly-meal structure; instead they are one-pot meals that include Slow-Cooker Chicken Curry, Miso Bean Soup, and Venison Stew. A chapter on drinks will include nutritious smoothies, so-called "green drinks", and others. I became quite interested in Dr. Budwig's work through research. My chemistry skills are pretty old, so I struggled mightily through her lectures embodied in the companion volume "Flas Oil As a True Aid ..." etc.

Now, this book is supposed to be a cookbook. The substantial value of the diet is the preparation of the flax-based key ingredients that are then replicated in every ensuing recipe.

What this book needed was a decent editor. It is a translation of work that was mainly done 60 years ago! One cannot go to Germany circa 1960 in order to implement the food plan, and so the editors needed to do just a little bit of work to make this relatively painless for implementation.

There is virtually NO decent editing work done here, and the references to Dr. Budwig's patented, offered products is not suitable. For instance, one of the key ingredients in these recipes is a "Muesli" carefully designed by Dr. Budwig. (One of her colleagues stated that he wished the beneficiaries of this diet - the users - all had a PhD in chemistry so they could understand the quality of Dr. Budwig's work.)

This Muesli ("Linomel") was once branded by Dr. Budwig, apparently, and the book references an 800 number to call. However, when you do call, they tell you that was a "misprint" in the book, and that they sell flax seed oil, and not "Linomel," Dr. Budwig's patented product.

The fact is, you will look in vain for what Linomel truly is, and therefore will have to go without it. Some internet sites tell you to simply use 4 teaspoons of freshly-ground flax seeds, and to eat them within 20 minutes. Others simply replace it with flax seed oil and cottage cheese, which, in the book, is called something else.

Therefore, when buying this book, be prepared to do a whole lot of head-scratching and web searching to get the basic ingredients down.

Also, be prepared to pay a fortune for your flax seed oil, as the cheapest it can be found, even buying bulk, is $12.50/qt. More likely you will be paying around $15 per cup!

Terrible cookbook if you're actually following the GI Diet 1 out of 5 stars.

I started following the GI Diet (Rick Gallop's book in case there are other versions). I'm not crazy about all of his recipes, so I wanted to get another cookbook that would give me some additional recipes that I could use while on the diet. The cover of "The Low GI Diet Cookbook" even says "The World's Foremost Authorities on the Glycemic Index". Hah! As I flip through the pages, every recipe that calls for a sweetener uses honey, maple syrup, sugar, brown sugar, and even confectioner's sugar! There aren't even any conversion charts on how to substitute with agave nectar, stevia, or xylitol. My biggest gripe is with the sweets, but I'm not thrilled that many other recipes call for non-green-light ingredients.

While it was vegan ultra-runner Scott Jurek who convinced me to change my diet, about 6 months later a friend recommended this book to me, and for the most part it's this man and this book that have convinced me plant-based nutrition is the future.

In answering a question for me that I submitted on his website, John Robbins led me to Vegsource and the rest of the gang. While it took a little time for a response to my question, when I did receive it, it came directly from John Robbins. I was quite surprised by this, and felt that I shouldn't "needlessly" bother him again, even with a thank you.

The front cover of this book shows a mouth-watering chicken pot pie with a gorgeous crust. That's what interested me in the book. But guess what, the crust recipe is not included! When I person needs to cook gluten-free, it's pretty simple to figure out what recipes are OK--salad, cheese and eggs, chicken and other meats, etc. What you need a book to teach you is how to make breads, pie crusts, and stuff like that. This book has a few good recipes, but it's definitely not worth what I paid for it -- and I didn't pay full price, I bought a used version that looks totally new... maybe the last owner found out what I did: this cookbook is a disappointment.
